Home to the famous Golden Temple, one of Sikhism's holiest shrines, gold holds immense religious significance. Silver is also used in traditional jewelry. The city of Amritsar dwells in Punjab and got its name from Amrita Saras, the pool which translates to "Pond of nectars" surrounded by the buildings of Gurudwara. The entire town was built upon the famous Harmandir Sahib, or golden temple having used more than 500 kgs of gold.
In 1830, Maharaja Ranjit Singh donated 162 kgs of gold to embellish the building with gold leaves. Later the building was renovated with 500 kgs of gold in the years 1995-1995. Since then, the building has been renovated by donations and voluntary contributions by devotees. Made with 24 carats gold, multiple layers of gold plating is used in the temple throughout the years to maintain its golden lustre. Recently, the temple was renovated in 2018 with 162 kgs of gold worth more than 50 crores at that time. Inviting ardent Sikhs and others from different parts of the world, the free kitchen of the temple feeds a vegetarian meal to approximately 100,000 people each day to all visitors despite caste, religion or other differences.
