The temple state of India, known for the famous Jagannath and Sun temple is also known for Silver. Cuttack, a city of Odisha state holds the title of the Silver City of India because of its Tarakashi (silver filigree) craft. The Silver city is home to nearly 2000 Tarakashi artisans who inherited the craftsmanship from their forefathers. The word Tarakashi is translated to the design from wires.This fine art turns the silver bricks into wires and then finally giving them the form of beautiful jewellery and showpieces. This more than 500 years old artform is practised by artisans from the east coastal region who turn meticulous pieces from hair like thin wires or foils. Young boys with sharp eyes are considered the best artisans because of the fineness of the artform.

In fact other than this, Gold and Silver are used in jewellery making especially in traditional Odissi jewellery, with cultural significance in the state. The Odissi dance form signifies the art of storytelling where all jewellery pieces participate not merely as an ornament. Contrary to other artforms only the Odissi Dance form requires fine silver jewellery than gold jewellery. From head to toe all jewel pieces of Odissi dance form symbolises spirituality and mythology.
