Indie distributor GKIDS has acquired the North American distribution rights to Satellite Girl and the Milk Cow, from Korean director Chang Hyung-yun. It’s currently available for streaming via the VRV Select platform, and will be given a theatrical and home video release this summer.
In the story, an out of commission satellite picks up a lovelorn ballad on her radio antenna and descends to Earth to find the source. But on the way she is caught in the crossfire of a raging magical battle and is transformed into Satellite Girl. Meanwhile, the balladeer is turned into a farm animal. GKIDS describes the film as a “heartfelt and wildly entertaining commentary on the possibility for human connection in the crazy, mixed-up, post-modern world we live in.”
Said GKIDS president David Jesteadt, “it is safe to say that you are unlikely to have ever seen anything like this movie before — a truly original, fantasy anime sci-fi rom-com, just bursting with humor and heart. I’m hoping as many people as possible get the opportunity to see this remarkable film.”
GKIDS‘ The Breadwinner, the story of a girl growing up under Taiban rule, is currently nominated for an Oscar for best animated feature. Since 2010, GKIDS has scored 10 nominations in this category, second only to Disney/Pixar.
