Ka ʻOihana Lawelawe Kaiāpuni
You may think of us as the Department that takes care of everything we donʻt want anymore–wastewater, trash and green waste. But our larger mission is far-reaching: to protect our ʻaina and develop a sustainable future for our children.

Welcome

When it comes down to it, the Department of Environmental Services (ENV) takes care of everything we don’t want anymore — the wastewater from our drains, and the trash and green wastes from our homes and lawns.

Every day, ENV collects and treats about 96.31 million gallons of wastewater, with a design capacity of 153.28 MGD, along with gathering our trash from the curb and disposing of it six days a week.

But while ENV provides these services, the department’s larger mission is to work in partnership with the residents of the City & County of Honolulu to make sure our island has a clean, safe environment.

ENV works with businesses, individuals, and sister agencies to foster a sense of joint responsibility for our ‘aina to protect our children.
