"All We Imagine As Light" : un séduisant retour de l'Inde en Compétition à Cannes
Ce jeudi soir, Payal Kapadia était la première réalisatrice indienne à pouvoir prétendre à la Palme d'or. Elle signe un drame sensible qui explore la condition féminine dans l'Inde contemporaine.

Alors que se termine tranquillement une Compétition en demi-teintes, le 77e Festival de Cannes accueillait, jeudi soir, le très sensible All We Imagine As Light. Il s'agit de la première entrée indienne en Compétition depuis Destinée de Shaji N. Karun en 1994. Payal Kapadia est surtout la première réalisatrice indienne en lice pour la Palme d'or.
À Mumbai, Prabha (Kani Kusruti), infirmière, vit en colocation avec sa jeune collègue Anu (Divya Prabha). Alors que son mari est parti tenter sa chance en Allemagne, Prabha mène une existence assez triste, flirtant chastement avec l'un des médecins de l'hôpital sans rêver à l'amour. Joyeuse et tête-en-l'air, Anu cherche, elle, une occasion pour passer un moment intime avec son petit ami Shiaz (Hridhu Haroon), dont elle n'a jamais osé parler à ses parents. Lesquels ne cessent lui envoyer des photos de candidats au mariage issus de bonnes familles…
La difficulté d'aimer
En 2021, Payal Kapadia s'était fait remarquer sur la Croisette avec A Night of Knowing Nothing (Toute une nuit sans savoir), qui avait obtenu l'Œil d'or, prix qui, depuis 2015, récompense le meilleur documentaire, toutes sections confondues. Présenté à la Quinzaine des Cinéastes, ce film dévoilait la correspondance d'une jeune étudiante et de son amoureux, sur fond d'évolution de l'Inde contemporaine.
Dans son nouveau film, de fiction cette fois, la cinéaste de 38 ans explore le même thème, celui de la possibilité d'aimer pour une femme en Inde. Pour ce faire, All We Imagine in Love dresse le portrait de deux femmes de deux générations différentes, campées par des comédiennes d'une grande justesse. La première mettant entre parenthèses sa vie sentimentale dans l'attente de l'improbable retour de son mari, la seconde rêvant d'un amour difficilement acceptable aux yeux de la société…
Une grande sensualité
À mille lieues de l'esthétique du cinéma bollywoodien, All We Imagine As Light, coproduit avec la France et les Pays-Bas, est un film d'une infinie délicatesse et d'une très grande sensualité, attentif à la lumière, aux couleurs et aux sons de Mumbai. Toujours en mode mineur, Kapadia parvient à se mettre au diapason des sentiments de ces femmes marquées par une profonde mélancolie, ne pouvant s'autoriser à vivre la vie à laquelle elles aspirent réellement.
En mettant en scène, dans la seconde partie du film, une escapade en compagnie d'une collègue plus âgée vers un village au bord de l'océan, au sud de Mumbai, la cinéaste esquisse pourtant la possibilité d'une autre existence. Et ce en décrivant, de façon très douce, la solidarité qui existe entre ces trois femmes d'âges différents…
