Plans to convert the historic building into a medical centre have been lodged with Maitland City Council and are on display until September 19.
The property, located at 99 - 101 Newcastle Street, East Maitland, was built in 1844 by John Smith and is located in the East Maitland Heritage Conservation Area.
Health Design Australia has lodged a development application to change the building's use from a retail premises to a medical centre, demolish an existing shed at the rear of the site and an external toilet to accommodate stormwater drainage, reconfigure the car parking layout, construct a disabled ramp, demolish internal walls to reconfigure the existing floor plan and install a lift to access each level.
A statement of environmental effects said that if approved, the premises would be known as Hunter River Medical Centre and would operate Monday to Saturday from 8am to 7pm.
The medical centre is expected to employ 12 people - three doctors, three nurses and six administrative staff.
It is expected that the number of clients to attend the centre each day would be between 80 and 100.
