NEWARK — One man died and another suffered serious injury after a weekend stabbing incident police are investigating as a homicide, authorities said.

In a statement Sunday afternoon, police said officers responded just before 7:30 p.m. Saturday to a report of gunfire along the 37000 block of Oak Street.

When officers arrived, they found an unresponsive man suffering from likely stab wounds. Despite life-saving measures from first responders including Alameda County Fire Department firefighters, the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

The man’s identity was withheld, pending next-of-kin notification by the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office coroner’s bureau.

Officers also located a 42-year-old Newark man at the scene. That man was taken to a hospital for treatment of significant injury, and was later listed in stable condition.

Police did not share the nature of any relationship between him and the dead man. A city spokesperson said Alameda County Sheriff’s Office crime lab personnel lent support to police investigating the incident as a homicide, the city’s third of the year.
