Pirs arrived at the orbital outpost attached to a modified Progress spacecraft for an automated docking to the Zvezda service module’s Earth-facing port on Sept. 16, 2001.
Pirs has hosted numerous docked Soyuz crew ships and Progress cargo craft during its near 20-year stay at the orbital lab.
Pirs was detached from the orbital outpost on July 26, 2021, to make way for new science and docking modules.
The Pirs Docking Compartment, also known as DC-1, is a Russian Module on the International Space Station. Pirs provides an airlock for cosmonaut spacewalks. It also serves as a docking port for transport and cargo vehicles to the Space Station. In addition, Pirs can transport fuel between the Zvezda or Zarya modules and docked vehicles such as a Soyuz or Progress spacecraft.
