B. keep in, hold water, etc., δάκρυον ὄμματ᾽ ο ὐκέτι στέγει prob.f.l. in E.IA888 (troch.); ο ὐκ ἂν δυναίμην μ ὴ στέγοντα πιμπλάναι I could not fill leaky vessels, Id.Fr.899; ὕδ ω ρ ς., of a vessel, Pl.R.621a: metaph., “τ ὴν ψ υ χ ὴν κοσκίνῳ ἀπ ῄκασε . . τετρημένην, ἅτ ε ο ὐ δυναμένην στέγειν δ ι ᾽ ἀπιστίαν κ α ὶ λήθην” Pl.Grg.493c; [“ψ υ χ ὴν ] στέγουσαν ο ὐδέν” Id.Lg.714a; in Id.R.586b, τ ὸ στέγον ἑαυτῶν prob. means the continent part of each man, cf. “στεγανός” 11.4.

III. shelter, protect, “πύργοι πόλιν στέγουσιν” S.OC15 codd., cf. A.Th.797: metaph., “ὅρκος ς. τ ὴν ὁμόνοιαν α ὐτ ῶν ” D.S.11.29 (cj.); τ ὸ ξύλον ἔστεξεν ἡ γ ῆ retained and cherished it, so that it struck root, Plu. Rom.20, cf. Alex.35.
2. conceal, keep hidden, “κακόν τ ι κεύθεις κ α ὶ στέγεις ὑπ ὸ σκότῳ” E.Ph.1214; “ἥξ ε ι . ., κ ἂν ἐγ ὼ σ ι γ ῇ στέγω” S.OT341; τί χ ρ ὴ στέγειν ἢ τί λέγειν; Id.Ph.136 (lyr.); “τ ὸ γ ὰρ γυναιξὶν α ἰσχρὸν σ ὺν γ υ ν α ῖκ α χ ρ ὴ στέγειν” Id.Fr.679; “ς. τ ἀμ ὰ κ α ὶ σ ᾽ ἔπ η ” E.El.273; “στέξαι τ ὸ κριθέν” Plb.4.8.2:—Pass., to be kept secret, Th.6.72; π α ρ ᾽ ὑμ ῶν ε ὖ στεγοίμεθ᾽ let my counsel be kept secret by you, S.Tr.596.
