Hi there! I respect that the therapeutic process is unique to each individual and is a cooperative relationship. In consideration of this, I utilize a variety of approaches with an underlying warm, person-centered approach. Throughout my approaches, I believe that it is through the courageous exploration of the self that patterns and belief systems may be understood and challenged for a more fulfilling quality of life. In addition, I can also offer expressive arts therapy (i.e. therapeutic journaling, collaging, visual art), which assists when words may yet be insufficient. This is optional. I can also utilize hypnotherapy.

Art therapy at Bluebird Avenue is Autistic-informed, neuro-affirming, creative, strengths-based, sensory-sensitive, and client-centered.
I primarily work with Autistic individuals of all ages. My work is focused on supporting my clients through either the process of their identification as an Autistic person or understanding what that means in terms of their past, present, and future. I help clients learn ways to mitigate the mental health impact of living life as an Autistic person, in particular through the creative process, but also by learning more about how and why their brains and bodies experience the world the way they do.

I believe that not all healing has to come from conversation but can be discovered nonverbally through evidence-based art.
Seeking help can be a difficult and scary process, especially if you feel like you're in it alone. I am here to provide that safe and non-judgemental environment while we explore your thoughts, feelings and behaviors. I work collaboratively with clients to develop life skills, regulate emotions, and to help you reach your goals through an eclectic approach. I tailor sessions to the needs of each individual utilizing techniques like mindfulness, going outside, art therapy, exposure therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, and evidence based techniques.

I truly enjoy bringing creativity into sessions through art, movement and nature as well.
I can provide a safe space where clients can explore thoughts, emotions, and behaviors freely. Regardless of cultural background or personal lifestyles, all are welcomed to explore themselves, their needs, their goals, and any concerns they may have, through a relaxed and nonjudgmental therapeutic experience. I aim to encourage, highlight, and empower those who seek clarity through difficult situations or when life appears most murky. Navigating through difficult thoughts or experiences alone may appear daunting at times. You are not alone and therapy can be that outlet to which you will be able to create your own path to healing.

Art therapy is a mixture of creative expression with traditional talk therapy and can be extremely useful for people who may not be as comfortable talking openly.
Creative expression can be extremely useful for many different struggles that you may have. Creativity can tap into the part of our brain that is used less often and create new pathways for positive mental health. Anxiety, grief, substance use, self-esteem struggles etc. can be managed through the use of Art therapy mixed with traditional talk therapy. No artistic ability is needed in order to participate in this practice, nor will you be judged for artistic ability. If you are someone who may also struggle with expressing verbally, Art therapy may be for you. I look forward to supporting you in the best way possible!

I use art therapy, TF-CBT, Acceptance and Commitment therapy and tailored approaches for ages 6-50.
Feeling trapped in life, with a roaring in your ears and locked up in your thoughts, ignoring everything around you? Have you ever experienced moments where it feels like an overwhelming darkness is consuming you? Sometimes depression and anxiety can feel like they are devouring you, and all you can do to keep from screaming is to make yourself invisible and hope that nothing else comes your way as you struggle through your cocoon of darkness. However, as one of my favorite authors, Sarah J. Maas, says, "Only you can decide what breaks you."

Art Therapy

How does art therapy work?

The process of making art allows people to express themselves. Art-making can take many forms, such as painting, collage, or sculpting. The therapist asks questions that the work elicits, such as how the person felt while creating their piece, or if any memories surfaced that they can discuss. The therapist will then work with the patient to process their experience, understand themselves better, and work toward change.

Does art therapy help with trauma?

Art therapy can be a valuable treatment option for those suffering from trauma. Traumatic experiences such as combat, rape, or childhood abuse can be so painful that articulating them can be too scary or painful; creating art allows people to express themselves without words, and tell their story in a different way. The physical nature of creating art can also help people feel rooted in the body, which may benefit those who feel disconnected from their body in the aftermath of trauma.

How long does art therapy last?

The duration of art therapy varies, but a common length for treatment is 10 to 15 weekly sessions. Some people may see improvement in just a few weeks, while others may choose to remain in therapy longer term. Patients should periodically discuss their goals with their therapist to make sure the two are aligned on process and progress.

What are the limitations of art therapy?

Art therapy is helpful for many people, but a limitation is that it doesn’t have as robust an evidence base as other forms of therapy, such as cognitive behavioral therapy or acceptance and commitment therapy. The evidence on art therapy is mixed; some research demonstrates its benefits, while other research suggests that it has little impact on patients.
