Kinder eggs are officially returning to the US more than 40 years after they were banned.

Kinder Surprise - chocolate eggs with toys hidden inside - were barred from sale in America by the Food and Drug Administration because of the choking hazard posed by the small toys.

But, Americans have been so eager to get their hands on the treat that 60,000 smuggled eggs were seized by border officials in 2011, according to the US Customs and Border Protection.

Now Kinder eggs are making a legal comeback in the country, although they won’t be in their original form. Instead, customers can expect to see shelves stacked with Kinder Joy, a similar sweet which is deemed safer than the Kinder Surprise.

The Kinder Joy consists of two individually packaged halves, with one half containing the chocolate and the other containing the toy.

Ferrero International announced on Monday that sweet-toothed fans won’t have to wait long to taste the treat. Kinder Joy will be hitting the shelves on Black Friday (24 November).

"When you're a kid, every surprise counts, especially the little ones. Kinder Joy is a fun, new way to help parents bring little surprises to their kids anytime they want," Paul Chibe, CEO of Ferrero North America, said in a statement.

"The delicious, unique taste of Kinder Joy and the wide variety of toys will delight kids, while mum and dad will be surprised by the high quality of the confection and toys – it's unlike anything currently on the US market."

Each Kinder Joy will be priced at $1.34 (£1.02), and will be available from Walmart for the first 30 days after its release before expanding to other retailers.
