Did You Know...

Old Capitol Prison and Its Female Spies

The site of the Supreme Court Building was the location of the Old Capitol Prison, which housed prisoners during the Civil War. Among the Prison’s most infamous prisoners were Belle Boyd, a notorious Confederate spy from the Shenandoah Valley in Virginia, and “Southern Woman” Rose O’Neal Greenhow, who led a local spy network. Greenhow was instrumental in alerting the Confederate forces about the Union Army advancing on Manassas, Virginia, before the first Battle of Bull Run.
