International Details - Orphans Still Strong

November 4, 2007

The Orphanage may have fallen out of the top five internationally, but it remained the top draw in Spain with $4.11 million on 373 screens over the weekend for a three-week total of $20.78 million. This is more than Ratatouille has earned in that market after three months of release and equivalent to $200 to $300 million here. It won't make $200 to $300 million here, in fact, it might not make $20 million here. It all depends on how well it does with critics and award committees.

  • Resident Evil: Extinction fell 40% to $3.62 million on 2087 screens in 31 markets for a total of $56.55 million. The film had no major openings this weekend and no single market was able to crack $1 million.
  • Le Coeur Des Hommes 2 opened in first place in France with $3.53 million on 517 screens while it missed the top ten in Belgium with just $81,000 on 18 screens.
  • Crows: Episode 0 also opened in first place in its native market leading the box office in Japan with $3.48 million on 259 screens.
  • The Seeker: The Dark is Rising nearly doubled its market count this weekend but only one of the new markets, Russia, was a significant opening. There the film managed $704,000 on 209 screens and was the biggest non-native release at the box office this past weekend. However, overall the film only managed $3.15 million on 1982 screens in 30 markets for a total of $11.03 million.
  • Going By The Book remained in first place in South Korea while it slipped to 11th internationally with $3.01 million on 343 screens over the weekend and $8.33 million in total.
  • Shadow Boxing 2 remained in first place in Russia with $2.77 million on 583 screens while it added $2.89 million on 646 screens in three markets over the weekend for a total of $10.15 million.
  • Rush Hour 3 fell from first to fourth in France with $1.46 million on 475 screens over the weekend and $4.27 million in total. Overall it added $2.84 million on 1774 screens in 34 markets for a total of $108.26 million. This is more than Rush Hour made internationally, but still a bit back of Rush Hour 2's $121 million international total.
  • No major openings left Superbad in 14th place with $2.69 million on 1433 screens in 34 markets for a total of $35.80 million. Its best market of the weekend was Spain where it added $1.38 million on 351 screens over the weekend for a total of $3.97 million after two.
  • Michael Clayton added $2.65 million on 804 screens in 14 markets for a total of $16.55 million after a month on the international scene. No major openings hurt the film, but it also didn't do particularly well in the few markets it did open in. Its biggest debut came in Belgium but it only earned fifth place with $172,000 on $208,000 screens.
  • The Invasion climbed into 16th place with $2.53 million on 1310 screens in 18 markets for a total of $17.26 million. This growth was almost entirely due to the film's fourth place, $1.27 million opening on 292 screens in Spain.
  • Eastern Promises returned to the charts in 17th place with $2.25 million on 582 screens in 10 markets for a total of $8.30 million. This includes a fourth place, $1.28 million opening on 280 screens in the U.K. and a seventh place, $281,000 opening on 47 screens in Australia.
  • Halloween also returned to the charts this week earning 18th place with $2.15 million on 966 screens in 16 markets for a total of $6.97 million. The film debuted in ten markets over the weekend, but struggled in all of them. Its best opening was in Germany where it earned fifth place with $634,000 on 221 screens while it also managed fifth in Russia with $626,000 on 197 screens.
  • The Heartbreak Kid fell 31% to $2.12 million on 912 screens in 11 markets for a total of $22.00 million, but it had no major openings this weekend. Next weekend, on the other hand, it opens in 10 markets, including Germany and Mexico.
  • Election Day remained in second place in Russia with $2.04 million on 496 screens for a total of $5.34 million after two weeks.
  • The Brave One added $2.03 million on 1555 screens in 41 markets for a total of $28.17 million. This includes a fifth place, $745,000 opening on 295 screens in Japan.
  • Shadows in the Palace remained in second place in South Korea adding $2.02 million on 367 screens over the weekend for a total of $7.28 million.
  • The Kingdom fell ten places to 23rd with $1.93 million on 1337 screens in 23 markets for a total of $19.15 million. This includes an eighth place opening in Mexico where it pulled in $159,000 on 148 screens.
  • Le Deuxieme Souffle, which means The Second Souffle, opened in third place in France with $1.89 million on 586 screens while missing the top ten in Belgium with $37,000 on 23.
  • Death At A Funeral added $1.82 million on 466 screens in 11 markets to its total of $15.56 million, which is more than its reported production budget of $9 million. Not only that, it doesn't count the film native U.K., where it didn't open until this weekend.
  • Live Free or Die Hard returned to the charts for perhaps the last time. Over the weekend the film debuted in second place in Italy with $1.79 million on 360 screens, which is the only market it is playing in at the moment. Overall the film now has $240.56 million, which is behind only Die Hard: With a Vengeance, but worldwide it has $375.09 million, which is the best for the franchise.
  • I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry is shedding screens and markets as it earned $1.76 million on 1086 screens in 30 markets for a total of $60.38 million.
  • Elizabeth: The Golden Age started its international run in Italy with $1.75 million on 323 screens, which was only good enough for third place. This is better than its start here, but Italy tends to reward these types of films more.
  • Jab We Met started its international run in 28th place with $1.75 million on 575 screens in 16 markets.
  • Earth rounded out the top 30 with $1.73 million on 579 screens in 4 markets for a total of $6.37 million.
As expected, The Bourne Ultimatum fell out of the top 30 but it still added $1.31 million on 820 screens in 29 markets for a total of $184.90 million. Also, the film opens in Italy this week, Japan next weekend, and China the weekend after that so it could still beat the combined international total o f the previous two installments.
