Authorities in Florida have identified the owner of a boat that struck and killed the teenage granddaughter of a United States ambassador as 78-year-old Carlos Guillermo Alonso.

Ella Adler, 15, was water-skiing with friends near Nixon Beach in Miami-Dade County on Saturday when she was hit. The driver of the boat that struck Ella fled, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC).

Ella, whose grandfather is Michael Adler, the US ambassador to Belgium, died at the scene. After the tragedy the family were visited by Jill Biden, the first lady.

Authorities have now identified Alonso, of Coral Gables, about 12 miles from Nixon Beach, as the operator of the boat. He was the only occupant of the vessel, according to an FWC
