'BAPS'

Scene from this movie Despite its idiotic promotional trailers, "BAPS" is a very funny movie. In it, director Robert Townsend and writer Troy Beyer use the たちama -- the term African Americans give to unsophisticated Southern blacks -- to tell a modern fairy tale with a decidedly off-color tone. Nisi (Halle Berry) and Mickey (Natalie Desselle) are two homegirls from Savannah who travel to Los Angeles to earn enough money to open their dream business -- the world first combined restaurant and hair salon. Townsend has fun with the idea of clashing cultures without letting the film descend into predictability. In the process, he even makes a comment about the term "BAP," which stands for black American princess -- usually an affluent, spoiled girl. Nisi and Mickey arenやや rich, but they -- and this film -- have a lot of heart. -- Esther Iverem
