最 簡單 嘅方法 係 用 統計 學 方法 計 吓唔同 腦 區 嘅結構 性 特徵 (大 細 等 )同 隻 動物 嘅行為 同 認知 係 咪有相關 [25]。科學 家 可 以研究 病變 (lesion):佢哋可 以去搵一啲因為意外或者腦疾病,搞到個 腦 入 面 某 幾 忽 喪失 咗功能 嘅病人 返 嚟研究 ;而喺用人 以外 嘅動物 做研究 嗰陣,科學 家 可 以索性 幫呢啲動物 做手術 切 走 個 腦 嘅某一 忽 ;跟住呢啲科學 家 就可以睇吓喪失 咗個腦 某 一忽會對一隻動物嘅行為有啲乜嘢影響,從 而推斷 個 腦 每 一忽係做乜功能嘅[26][27]。科學 家 可 以用腦 電 圖 (EEG)或 者 磁力 共振 造影 (MRI)等 嘅神經 成 像 方法 監察 住 個 腦 嘅活動 ,靠 噉嚟研究 個 腦 入 面 每 一 忽 嘅功能 。例 如如果 家 吓個腦 入 面 某 一忽喺隻動物做需要用記憶 嘅工作 嗰陣會 零 舍 活躍 嘅話,噉就可 以知道 嗰一忽嘅功能同記憶有關[28]。

延髓 (medulla)係 腦幹 最下 面 嗰橛,有 好 多 細 粒 嘅神經 細胞 核 ,幫手做一大 柞 感知 同 埋 唔自主 嘅運動 功 能 ,好 似 係 控 制 嘔、心 跳 同 消化 過程 呀噉[11]。腦 橋 (pons)喺正個 延髓 嘅上面 。佢入面 有 好 多 神經 細胞 核 ,幫手控 制 一啲自主但簡單嘅行為,好 似 係 瞓覺、流汗 、膀胱 嘅功能 、眼 嘅郁動 、吞嘢同 埋 表情 等 等 。邊 緣 系統 (limbic system):下 丘 腦 (hypothalamus)係 前 腦 嘅根基 ,雖然好 細 粒 ,但 就極之 複雜 ,有 大量 嘅細粒 神經 細胞 ,而且粒 粒 都 有 獨特 嘅連結 同 神經 化學 。下 丘 腦 有 幫手做唔自主 或 者 半 自主 嘅行為 ,好 似 係 瞓覺當 中 嘅某啲部份、飲 飲食 食 同 埋 某 一啲荷爾蒙嘅分泌等等[29]。杏仁 核 (amygdala)專門 負 責 處 埋 外界 刺激 同 情緒 之 間 嘅關係 :杏仁 核 會 接收 有 關 自身 情緒 嘅訊號 ,搵出外界 刺激 同 自身 情緒 之 間 嘅啦掕,靠 噉幫隻 動物 學識 邊 啲刺激 對 自己 有利 同 邊 啲對自己 有害 [30]。舉個例 說明 ,家 吓有某 一個刺激硬係會喺隻動物覺得驚 嗰陣出現 ,而會令 隻 動物 驚 通常 表示 一 樣 嘢有害 ,於是乎粒杏仁 核 就會幫手,令 隻 動物 下 次 識得避開嗰個令 佢驚嘅刺激 [31][32]。海馬 體 (hippocampus)位 於下 丘 腦 嘅兩邊 ,形狀 成 隻 海馬 噉嘅樣 ,係 一 個 得 哺乳類 先 有 嘅結構 ,海馬 體 喺功能 上 好 多樣 化 ,由 焦慮 等 嘅情緒 以至空間 記憶 (spatial memory;指 記 住 有 關 周圍 環境 同 空間 方向 相關 嘅資訊嘅記憶 功 能 )佢都有 份管[33]。- 嗅球(olfactory bulb)喺多
數 嘅哺乳類 當 中 都 處 於個腦 最前 嗰個位 ,顧名思 義 ,專門 管 一 啲同嗅覺 有 關 嘅資訊,會 向 外套 層 (睇下面 )管 嗅覺 嗰忽射 訊號。人 同 其他靈長 目 嘅嗅球 異常 咁細嚿-反映 咗靈長目 係 靠 視覺 多 過 靠 嗅覺 嚟去了解 佢哋周圍 嘅世界 嘅[34]。
丘 腦 (thalamus)有 一大 柞 神經 細胞 ,而且佢哋功 能 上 好 多元 化 :有 啲幫手傳 資 訊去大腦 嗰度或 者 由 大腦 收 資 訊,而其他 嘅又有 同 動機 有 關 。基底 核 (basal ganglia)係 一列位於丘腦對上,互相緊密 連 繫嘅構造 ,似 乎主要 負 責 做動作 選擇 嘅功能 :佢哋會 向 個 腦 所 有識 令 到 身體 郁 嘅腦區 射 壓 抑 性 嘅訊號 ,等 佢哋郁 唔到,而個基底 核 淨 係 喺某啲情況 之 下 會 停止 對 某 啲結構 做呢樣 壓 抑 性 嘅行為 ,等 嗰個結構 有 得 令 到 個 身體 郁 -於是基底 核 就可以管個 身體 嘅郁動 。強化 同 懲罰 會 令 基底 核 內部嘅連繫改變 ,並 且引致 隻 動物 嘅行為 有 所 改變 [35]。小腦 (cerebellum)幫手調 制 個 腦 其他系統 嘅輸出 -無論 係 運動 性 定 係 思考 性 嘅輸出 ,都會 由 小腦 調 制 吓,令 呢啲輸出 更 加 精確 。研究 發現 ,如果做手術 將 個 小腦 攞走,隻 動物 仲 會 識做佢做開 嘅嘢,但 佢啲動作 會 變 到 好 笨拙同 猶豫 。小腦 呢種調 制 功 能 唔係天生 嘅,而係有 得 學 嘅:例 如一個人 學 踩單車 嗰陣,佢個小腦 入 面 啲神經 細胞 會 發生 改變 (神經 可塑 性 [11]),令 到 佢踩單車 嗰陣嘅動作 更 加 準 確 ,於是乎佢踩起單車 上 嚟就愈 踩愈就手。小腦 另一樣值得留意嘅嘢係,人 類 小腦 嘅容量 只 係 成 個 腦 嘅 10%,但 成 個人 腦 有 成 一半嘅神經細胞都係喺小腦入面嘅[36][37]。上丘 (optic tectum)幫手令 到 個 腦 想 做嘅動作 方 向上 對 住 空間 入 面 某 個 點 -尤 其係當 個 動作 係 一 個 對 視覺 刺激 起 嘅反應 嗰陣。上丘 會 接收 大量 嘅視覺 同 第 啲感官 嘅資訊嚟控 制 眼 珠 嘅郁動 同 伸 手 攞嘢等 嘅動作 ,例 如係一 隻 貓頭鷹 嘅上丘 會 接收 視覺 同 聽覺 資 訊嚟知道 自己 周圍 啲物件 嘅位置 ,按呢啲資訊郁動 。而喺一啲原始嘅魚類 入 面 ,上丘 係 成 個 腦 最大 嚿嗰橛[38]。外套 層 (pallium,又 叫 做「dorsal telencephalon」)係 喺前 腦 個 表面 嘅一大 浸 灰 質 同 白 質 ,亦 都 係 個 腦 最 複雜 、最新 進化 出 嚟嘅結構 。哺乳類 嘅外套層叫 大腦 皮 層 (cerebral cortex),會 做好多 好 緊要 嘅功能 ,由 處理 感官 資 訊以至 對 目標 嘅控制 都 有 份,喺哺乳類 當 中 ,外套 層 進化 到 𢫏住 嗮成個 腦 ,做埋好 多 本 嚟由個 腦 其他部 份做嘅功能 。喺好多 哺乳類 動物 入 面 ,大腦 皮 層 表面 會 有 好 多 隆起 咗嘅腦 回 (gyrus,眾數係 gyri),令 到 塊 皮 層 表面 有 好 多 深溝 ,加 大 咗塊皮 層 嘅表面積 ,等 佢可以裝到 更 加 多 嘅神經 細胞 同 膠質 細胞 -自然 處理 到 更 加 多 嘅資訊[39]。可 以睇埋 腦 葉 (brain lobes)呢個大腦 皮 層 分 區 方案 。
腦 樑(corpus callosum)係 將 左腦 同 右腦 連 埋 一齊 嘅一大 柞 軸 突,呢個結構 令 到 左腦 同 右腦 能 夠合作 溝 通 。喺人當 中 ,好 多 廿 世紀 嘅神經 內科醫 生 都會 為 咗減輕 發 羊 吊 嘅病情 而做手術 切斷 呢個結構 ,而喺呢種情況 之 下 ,個 病人 嘅左右腦 會 出現 溝 通 困難 -例 如佢哋會能 夠用口 講 嚟描述 右手 掂到嘅物件 ,但 唔曉用 口 描述左手 掂到嘅物件 [註 2][40]。血 腦 屏 障 (blood-brain barrier)係 保護 個 腦 嘅一浸屏障:脊椎動物 嘅腦由 一 浸 腦膜 (meninges)包 住 ,令 到 個 腦 唔會直接 掂到個 頭 殼 ;腦膜 上面 有 一 啲細嘅窿,俾血管 通過 並 且將帶 氧嘅血 傳 俾腦嘅組織 用 ,呢啲血管 嘅壁嘅細胞 之 間 封 得 好 冚,形成 咗血腦 屏 障 ,呢個屏 障 會 阻擋好 多 毒素 同 病原 體 ,等 佢哋冇得傷害 個 腦 [41]。同時 ,血 腦 屏 障 有 陣 時又 會 阻住某 啲藥 或 者 抗體 通過 ,搞到喺醫治 腦病 嗰陣,啲藥劑師 好 多 時 要 大 費 周章 先 至 可 以令到 啲藥生 效 [42]。
