Abstract

Different authorities have been urging to practice ‘social distancing’ and/or ‘physical distancing’; and also suggesting different measures for distancing to slowing spread of novel corona virus (2019-nCoV). I describe both the phenomena ‘physical and social distancing’ in socio-psycho and political context and discuss the implications. I highlight ‘distance society’, social presence, importance of media and technologies; and media pedagogy. The findings show that authorities should use the terminology physical distancing instead of social distancing; and should encourage social unity — solidarity, responsibility, cooperation — and social closeness while practicing ‘physical distancing’.

Keywords: Coronavirus, social distancing, physical distancing, distance measure, distance society, media literacy, ICT
