Best of Year Winner, Eco: KlingStubbins: Autodesk - AEC Headquarters, Waltham, MA

Architecture, government, and transportation professionals often turn to Autodesk for 2-D and 3-D computer programs—starting with AutoCAD, introduced in 1982. Then and now, the company's hope has been that software products will lay the groundwork for more sustainable bricks-and-mortar designs in the future. That mission inspired KlingStubbins when it was approached by Autodesk about headquarters for its architecture, engineering, and construction division. The first step for the firm's six-person team, all LEED-certified, was to select a 50,000-square-foot space in an existing LEED Gold building in Waltham, Massachusetts. Systems to reduce water and energy consumption by more than 30 percent were partially in place, and the build-out involved the addition of suitably sustainable materials. Flooring includes palm plywood or natural linoleum, and carpet is recycled nylon; composite solid-surfacing has a high percentage of recycled content; paint and other finishes are nontoxic. Glass-fronted conference rooms and daylighting for all open office areas are two more arrows in the quiver as KlingStubbins targets LEED Platinum.

Best of Year Merit Awards, Eco

Aidlin Darling Design: 355 11th Street, San Francisco, CA

A corrugated, perforated zinc facade reduces heat gain while concealing the new aluminum-framed windows of this century-old post-and-beam warehouse, now a mixed-use development certified LEED Gold.

Envision Design: U.S. Green Building Council Headquarters, Washington, DC

The first project to be certified under the LEED-CI 3.0 rating system—at Platinum, no less—this 75,500-square-foot workplace features paneling of 500-year-old gumwood salvaged from the Tennessee River.

Pollack Architecture: VF Outdoor Montreal, Quebec, Canada

The Canadian headquarters of the parent company of Jansport, North Face, and Vans, this 38,000-square-foot LEED Silver space is defined by dynamic outdoor imagery and the greenest of materials—the drywall alone is 90 percent recycled.
