The launch of two Tomahawk cruise missiles at Iraqi military sites from a submarine breaks an over five-year absence of submarines from land attack missions.
In recent military operations against Iraq and in the Balkans, carrier-based tactical aircraft and cruise missiles launched from surface ships have been the Navy weapon of choice for warfighting commanders.
As part of Tuesday's cruise missile raids in Iraq, the USS Jefferson City (SSN-759), a Los Angeles-class attack submarine, fired two Block III Tomahawks to mark the first use of submarine-launched Tomahawks since the Persian Gulf War. As in surface ships, Tomahawks are launched from a vertical launch system on the submarine. …
