Manchester City have paid the £62million release clause for Rodri - and he will become their player in the next few days.

The Blues’ chief operating officer Omar Berrada was filmed arriving at La Liga headquarters in Madrid to complete the deal.

Under Spanish football rules, the player has to pay his own release fee, so City have advanced the 70million euros to the 23-year-old midfielder.

Rodri’s representatives then forward the money to La Liga, who in turn pass it on to the selling club - and that will make it a City club record fee, edging past the £60million paid for Riyad Mahrez last summer,.

The transfer is not completed until he actually signs for City, but that is a formality expected to be done in the near future.

Atletico confirmed the news on their website, stating: "La Liga has informed Atlético de Madrid that Rodrigo Hernández, through his lawyer, and representatives from Manchester City, paid the player’s release clause at the sports association’s headquarters on Wednesday, July 3.

"Manchester City has paid the buyout clause on behalf of the player.

"The player has therefore unilaterally terminated his contract with our club, which ran until June 30, 2023."

Rodri will be City’s first big signing of the summer, with Angelino also expected to complete his £5million return in the next day or two.

He has been earmarked as a starting defensive midfielder, in competition with Fernandinho , and expected to replace the 34-year-old Brazil international once his career ends.

That could be next summer, but Fernandinho may be offered another year on his contract if he performs well in the coming season.

Rodri is a Spain international, with six caps, and is seen as the successor to Sergio Busquets in the national team.

He spent just one season at Atletico after a £22million move from Villarreal, but quickly became a key player for them.
