Portsmouth 1-0 Southampton
Ayegbeni Yakubu celebrates his goal
Portsmouth striker Ayegbeni Yakubu's goal decided a scrappy south coast derby against Southampton and kept alive Pompey's survival hopes.

Yakubu was on hand to turn home Steve Stone's cross to give Portsmouth their first home win over their rivals since the 1960s.

Portsmouth created the better chances and Yakubu and Teddy Sheringham both missed clear-cut opportunities.

In injury time Kevin Phillips struck the woodwork for Southampton.

Amazingly, both teams had to make changes to their published team-sheets, with Pompey midfielder Eyal Berkovic forced to pull out with a virus, and Saints defender Michael Svensson straining a calf muscle in the warm-up.

Matthew Taylor replaced Berkovic, with Stephen Crainey coming into Saints starting line-up.

With a gale at their backs, Pompey made the early running, and Claus Lundekvam's foul on Yakubu gave Taylor a sight of goal 20 yards out, but the Portsmouth defender fired his shot straight into the wall.

Sheringham won another aerial battle with Higginbotham to nod the ball down for Yakubu who having turned sharply shot weakly at Antti Niemi from 12 yards.

The Nigerian missed an even easier chance a minute later when the flag stayed down to allow him a clear sight of goal, only to fire wide from 12 yards.

Sheringham made it a hat-trick of missed chances when he chested a long ball down but again fired straight at Niemi.

Rory Delap had Southampton's first clear sight of goal on 24 minutes, but his shot lacked the power to extend Shaka Hislop.

As Southampton began to claw their way into the game, Portsmouth were guilty of sloppy marking when Neil McCann was allowed space to head the ball across the face of goal where Kevin Phillips just failed to make contact.

Yakubu showed his inexperience at the start of the second half when opting to shoot when team-mates were well-placed.

As Pompey maintained the pressure the ball broke for Sheringham who made himself a yard of space before shooting straight at Niemi from 16 yards.

But Portsmouth again switched off at the back and James Beattie looped a header on to the roof of the net from Jason Dodd's cross.

Hislop then had to show safe hands to snatch a dangerous cross from Beattie at the foot of the post.

Portsmouth's plight gave them the greater need and they took the lead on 68 minutes. The ball was fed wide to Steve Stone whose cross was knocked in by Yakubu from four yards.

Southampton at last showed some urgency and when Delap's shot was blocked into the path of Phillips the former England striker's stinging drive was beaten away Hislop.

Hislop denied Phillips again, spreading himself to block after the Southampton striker chested down a long pass.

The Pompey keeper was a spectator, thought, when Phillips volley hit the inside of the post and rebounded to safety.

Right at the death, Hislop was again on the spot to block Lundekvam's powerful header on the line.
