Holland sink Argentina
International round-up
Substitute Giovanni van Bronckhorst scored three minutes from time to give Holland a 1-0 victory over Argentina in a friendly international at the Amsterdam ArenA. The Arsenal midfielder took a cross from Clarence Seedorf and hit a searing shot past Pablo Cavallero, who had made several fine saves earlier in the match. The pick of those stops was a diving save from a Patrick Kluivert header. Manchester United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy also hit the post on 18 minutes when Frank de Boer headed back a corner. Raul struck twice to lead Spain to a 3-1 win over Germany and set a new international scoring record for his country.
The Real Madrid striker got the first for Spain on 31 minutes, controlling a high ball into the box from Ruben Baraja and shooting across Oliver Kahn. That took his international tally to 30 and saw him surpass the old mark he shared with Fernando Hierro. Germany equalised six minutes before half time, Fredi Bobic bundling in from a corner. Jens Jeremies almost gave the Germans the lead with a spectacular effort, surprising Iker Casillas and hit the bar with a shot from inside his own half. Raul bagged his second from the penalty spot on 77 minutes and Guti made it 3-1 eight minutes from time when he took a pass from Vicente and poked a shot past Kahn. The Czech Republic claimed a highly deserved 2-0 victory over France as the European champions continued to struggle for form.
Goalkeeper Ulrich Rame handed the Czechs the lead after seven minutes when he allowed Zdenek Grygera's shot to slip through his hands. Substitute Milan Baros sealed the match just after the hour. It was France's first defeat since coach Jacques Santini took charge following last year's World Cup debacle and the French team was booed off the pitch. Brazilian World Cup winning coach Luiz Felipe Scolari's first game in charge of Portugal ended in a 1-0 defeat to Italy. Debutant striker Bernardo Corradi grabbed the crucial goal for an Italian side deprived of their entire first choice forward line. The Lazio striker hooked the ball home in the 62nd minute after Portugal keeper Ricardo had parried a shot from another new boy, Fabrizio Miccoli. Portugal produced some attractive football, but the Italians had the bulk of the chances with Ricardo pulling off some fine first half saves.
Meanwhile in Italy's Euro 2004 qualifying group, the former Yugoslavia failed to win their first match as Serbia and Montenegro when they allowed Azerbaijan to grab a 2-2 draw in Wednesday's only European competitive game. Predrag Mijatovic scored from the penalty spot after 32 minutes to put the home side ahead with Nikolas Lazetic adding a second after 54 minutes. Gurban Gurbanov hit back with two for the visitors, who earned their first point of the campaign. Wales still top Group Nine with a maximum nine points from three matches, while Serbia and Montenegro are in second place with five, one point more than Italy.
Turkey, who lead England in Euro 2004 Group Seven, played out a tight 0-0 draw with Ukraine. Preparing for a qualifing game against Sven-Goran Eriksson's side on 2 April, Turkish coach Senol Gunes experimented with newcomers Ibrahim Uzulmez and Tumer Metin in midfield. World Champions Brazil and China played out a lacklustre goalless draw in a friendly in Guangzhou. Despite fielding Ronaldo, Rivaldo and Ronaldinho in their starting line-up Brazil were unable to break down a Chinese defence well organised by new coach Arie Haan.
