Actor Patrick Stewart, who has received a knighthood in the New Year Honours list for services to drama, is known for a wealth of stage and screen roles, including the 1976 TV adaptation of I Claudius.
Sir Patrick, who was born in Mirfield, West Yorkshire, was a Royal Shakespeare Company member for 16 years. He starred in a BBC TV adaptation of Hamlet with fellow theatrical knight, Sir Derek Jacobi.
Sir Patrick, 69, says that theatre "has always been my great joy". Among numerous lead roles include Harold Pinter's The Caretaker on Broadway in 2003.
Sir Patrick has picked up numerous awards for his theatrical work, including three Olivier awards for West End roles. His most recent was earlier this year for Claudius in Hamlet, opposite David Tennant.
The actor is widely known for playing Star Trek's Captain Jean-Luc Picard. He has also appeared in the X-Men movies. He has also lent his rich vocal tones to animation characters and adverts.
The distinguished actor played a comic turn in Ricky Gervais's Extras as a thespian who wants to star in a film with nudity in every scene. The performance gained him an Emmy nomination.
