The history and the present of the nightshirts

How people dressed at night in the time, when any nightwear didn't exist, we can speculate only. Probably they more or less took off their clothes that they wore all day.

A nightshirt was first real nightwear. It developed from the long undershirt which was worn under clothes all day. In the evening, outer clothes was taken off only the undershirt didn't take off. Men as well as women slept in the undershirt however women used the shirt longer than men.

Using of nightshirt as independent clothes began in Italian Renaissance in 14th century. In the central Europe it appeared later – in 15th century. The nightshirt was till 19th century the only sort of nightwear which men, woman as well as children dressed. Wearing of men's pyjamas began in the end 19th century and particularly in begin 20th century. Women's pyjamas appeared still later, after First World War.

In the states of middle and east Europe, there was the epoch of socialism in 1948-1989. It meant restriction number of sorts from view of production of goods. There were produced for men the pyjamas only, the men's nightshirts weren't possible practically to buy (with exception German Democratic Republic and Poland).

After ending of socialism, the economy in post-communism countries was renewing and the produce as well as import of goods became comparable with other advanced states. The men's nightshirts returned to shops and they have been since the time common offers among the men's nightwear again.

wishbookweb.comThe evolution of the men's nightshirts in the USA we can observe in catalogues of mail-order stores. Thanks a collector who published them in the Internet we can see an offer of the men's nightshirts since 1944 to recent years. I placed selected pages with the men's nightshirts to a separate gallery. A lot of cuts and patterns from them could be inspiration for present producers.

Men and the nightwear

  Czech men and the nightwear

What do wear the men when they go to bed? There are answers from the solid Czech lady's discuss server:

40 %  pyjamas or T-shirt with shorts,
30 %  don't dress for sleeping, they sleep naked,
20 %  a nightshirt or a solely T-shirt,
10 %  sleep in shorts, boxers, briefs etc.

  Men's nightwear in others countries

There can be experiences with men's nightwear from your country. If you want to add your opinions write me.

The nightshirts versus the other nightwear

The nightshirts are simply the best. There are some arguments why the nightshirts are better than:

pyjamas
because in the nightshirt an elastic doesn't pinch,
because the nightshirt so easy doesn't tuck up to your kidneys,
because the nightshirt dresses and undresses more quickly,
because the nightshirt more easily hangs to a clothes line and irons,
because the nightshirt is cheaper,

solely shorts, boxers, briefs etc.,
because in the nightshirt an elastic doesn't pinch,
because in the nightshirt your shoulder don't cold,
because in the nightshirt it is possible to have breakfast, to watch TV etc. but it is not necessary to dress a dressing gown,

to sleep naked,
because in the nightshirt your shoulder don't cold,
because in the nightshirt it is possible to have breakfast, to watch TV etc. but it is not necessary to dress a dressing gown.

Women are the best argument for using of the nightshirts. The offer of the nightgowns is constantly large. Most women are faithful to the nightgowns and prefer them – look Nightwear in the number. They certainly know, why.

The nightshirts and the intimate contacts

Man dressed in the nightshirt is quite certainly elegant. But in opposite women's nightwear we expect from men's nightwear, including the nightshirts, first of all the practical function.

However, the nightshirt is better than other nightwear also in case of the intimate contacts. The nightshirt is able to take off the most quickly from others types of the nightwear. But it is not often necessary because the nightshirt can be tucked up only. A man with the partly tucking up nightshirt is virile but a man with the partly pulling down trousers is ridiculous.

How to buy

The nightshirt should be practical as well as stylish. The reason is we in the nightshirts don't sleep only but also we do hygiene, we have breakfast and others. How we should choose to choose right? I offer some advices from the practical aspect, the aesthetic aspect everybody must judge alone.

  Form

How we can see on the examples, we can choose from T-shirt style, classic style and historicist style. The pyjama tops are also one style of the nightshirts.

Most of the selling nightshirts are T-shirt style. They are made usually from a cotton knitting cloth. Naturally, these nightshirts are the most comfortable. They have got different lengths, short as well as long sleeves. Patterns are really miscellaneous from very sober without decorations to these which are decorated with a big infant picture.

For older men but also for young men with the poetic soul, the nightshirts of classic style are suitable. These nightshirts have got a collar, some buttons and long sleeves. Pattern is a decent stripe or cube. They are made from cotton or mix weaving cloth.

The pyjama tops are similar like the classic nightshirts. They are shorter than the nightshirts but longer than tops from classic pyjamas. They have got two pockets in bottom part and a belt. Pyjama tops are advisable for men who like classic pyjamas but dislike to wear trousers for sleeping.

Anybody, who likes history, maybe buys a historical nightshirt. The historical nightshirts have got old cuts and materials, length to floor and always long sleeves. However, one historical nightshirt costs the some money like a few standard nightshirts.

If you want to return to 60's, let to sew such a nightshirt. You can order a cut for a nightshirt.

  Material

The nightshirts of T-shirt style are made mainly from a cotton knitting cloth. This material needs a minimal upkeep only similar like ordinary T-shirts. You must be careful during ironing in case of the nightshirt with the picture.

The classic nightshirts haven't got the pictures but the ironing is protracted around the collar and the cuffs. You can find here a cotton or mix weaving cloth basic as well as modified (flannel, satin).

There are several interesting nightshirts. It is the nightshirt from Moira (see the picture). It is made from the material similar the functional garments. The nightshirt is suitable for men who more sweat.

Men desiring for extremely sheer can buy a silk nightshirt. Really, the silk nightshirts are made! You need only a payment card and fill order.

A flax is next less common material. You can choose between a sheerer fabric or a ecru. More about the nightshirts and next products from the flax (among others about bedclothe you can find on Dolna.

Who sweats little but wants to sweat more, he can buy the latex nightshirt.

For a compare, I weighet the nightshirt, every with short sleeves, from the various materials. Moira is the lightest aprox. 100 g, next the silk 120 g, sheerer cotton 200 g, sheerer flax 250 g, thicker cotton 300 g and ecru flax 500 g.

  Length

First about the length of sleeves. If you sleep in a cold room you will choose probably the long sleeves. Maybe you will use also the night cap, particularly if you have got fewer hair.

How to choose the length of the nightshirt?

A duvet secures you protection against the cold during sleeping. Feeling of warmth doesn't depend at the length of the nightshirt but at the thickness of cover. The nightshirt always a bit tucks up so you will not feel more warmly in a very long nightshirt than in a short one. On the contrary, the shorter nightshirt is more advantageous because the air can easily get to the parts of the man's body that have to be hide under some layers of clothes during all day.

When you get up in the morning you go to the warm bathroom or to the warm kitchen. The shorter nightshirt is more comfortable for hygiene or for sitting during breakfast. Maybe you will buy the long nightshirt in case if you live in a castle or in a old house. But the nightshirt only will not warm you. You will have to dress a dressing gown. In the case you can use the short nightshirt and the long dressing gown.

You must do an opinion of length of the nightshirt from aesthetics alone. You can find a lot of pictures on this websites for it. In my opinion it is the most fashionable if the bottom of the nightshirt ended a bit above knees.

There usually are the nightshirts on the counter of the shops and in the Internet shops which have got length from middle calves to a bit above knees. Shorter nightshirts aren't sold, but in case of need you can replace them by the T-shirts for sleeping. Very long nightshirts are possible to find among the historicist nightshirts or you must try one's luck on the Internet.

If you buy the nightshirt of straight cut with length below knees or longer, be careful – the nightshirt should have at least one slit reaching above your knees. It of course isn't valid when the nightshirt extends its width onto the bottom edge. It is usual for the historicist nightshirts.

When you buy the nightshirt don't look at length the model's nightshirt in the picture. The producers usually produce unitary length for all sizes of the concrete type nightshirt. How to define right length of the nightshirt you can read here or still better measure your body.

  Size

The nightshirts have got in compare with the T-shirts looser cut.

  Oversizes

The men's nightshirts are usually made in sizes M, L, XL and XXL. The nightshirts with funny printmakings have got the sizes M and XL only.

However, men with the exceptional figure can also choose. Men with the small figure can find a few nightshirts in the size S. They can also make themselves the T-shirt for sleeping or can buy the bigger nightshirt and after to use scissors and a sewing machine.

Big men can choose in oversizes shops. There are a few shops with oversizes on the Internet. Tall men have got the situation the most difficult. They will have to choose among the longest nightshirts. They will be lucky when the nightshirt is long at least about their knees.

There is the second chance for men who cannot use standard sizes – to order a made-measure nightshirt. Firms manufacturing the historicist nightshirts sew the nightshirts exactly according to the customer's body. Or you can find a tailor's where they will easily sew such a nightshirt for you. But the best is to marry a dressmaker.

  Boy's nightshirts

Surprisingly, the boy in the nightshirt is for the most producers the sphere sci-fi. Of course, the boy's nightshirts exist (see Czech examples or World examples) but they are less common.

When the boy is small he is satisfied with a children's nightshirt/nightgown which has got some neutral picture, for example the moon, an animal etc. But the boy in the older age doesn't dress anything girl's. Fortunately, nowadays is already possible to buy few types of the boy's nightshirts.

We can wish other producers to start making the boy's nightshirts. It is simple task – to do a bit long upper part of boy's pyjamas. The material, pictures, cuts – everything they have got to the disposal.

You can sew a boy's nightshirt from 60's too. There is link.

Differences between the men's nightshirts and the women's nightshirts/nightgowns

Women have taken over everything from a men's wardrobe, perhaps without the ribbon for the moustache. But how many men have got the moustache...?

In spite of that, we can find differences between men's and women's clothes. It applies also to the nightshirts/nightgowns. How can we define if the nightshirt/nightgown is determined for men or for women?

There is exact determination in case of the classic nightshirts with buttons. If the buttoning is right-side (the fingers of the right hand is possible to put among the buttoning buttons) it is the men's nightshirt. The buttoning on the women's nightshirt/nightgown is left-side.

The determination the T-shirt style nightshirt is more difficult. The typical feature of the men’s nightshirts is the cap or the pocket on the breast.

If the both are lacking we can follow the picture. The cask of beer is certainly manlier than the small sweet bear. The women's nightshirts/nightgowns often have got pictures also on the bottom edge and on the edges of the sleeves. This element doesn't occur on the men's nightshirts.

The men's nightshirts are generally less colourful. However, we can see also the men's nightshirts with light-blue, light-green, light-purple as well as orange colours. Definitely, don't expect a rose colour. If the nightshirt isn't without the picture but with the pattern we can see on the men's nightshirt a stripe, a cube or other geometric pattern. Flowers, animals or other picture pattern belong to women's chest of drawers.

Short sleeves at the nightshirts are usually wide with the length almost to elbows. We can see also the shortened and tapered sleeves similarly at the T-shirts. Those occur only at the women's nightshirts/nightgowns.

On the other hand, there are the elements which occur at the men's nightshirts as well as at the women's nightshirts/nightgowns. The neckline is round or to V at the men's or women's implementation. Also the attaching of the sleeves can be both vertical and oblique. We can find difference not even at the slits. They can be at men's as well as women's both the sharp and rounded corners and can be both on the one, usually left side, and on the both sides.

If you don't find any typical feature, maybe you have got in front you so-called unisex. Those nightshirts/nightgowns aren't too usual. The unisex nightshirts are suitable for the advertising nightshirts like the advertising T-shirts are.

How to start sleeping in the nightshirt

It is the same like everything in our life – for the first time it never is the best. How to enjoy from the comfort of the nightshirt as soon as it is possible? Don't ask women they don't advise you because they are accustomed to use the nightgowns since their childhood.

For the beginning, choose the knee-length nightshirt. Keep sleeping in it at least one week. It should be sufficient for you to become accustomed. Your sleep will be more relaxed (if you slept naked, you will not pull up a duvet on your shoulders, if you slept in the pyjamas, you will not move any elastic around your waist). In the course of time, you will be able to sleep also in the longer nightshirt without tangling or also in the shorter without tucking up above your waist.

If you have got other advice write to the discussion.

How to make the T-shirt for sleeping

The T-shirt is ideal for the summer months when we sleep light clothed. Any T-shirt is sufficient for this purpose. But when we stand up from the bed we want, as a rule, the T-shirt covered our intimate areas. The common T-shirt is for this case too short. How to make the prolonging T-shirt?

Take a T-shirt which is two sizes looser than your size. A common sheer T-shirts are ideal. Soak the T-shirt and put it dry. At the moment, when the T-shirt is almost dry, gradually stretch it to length round the whole circumference. The T-shirt endures relatively powerful stretching. In this way stretched T-shirt immediately iron. The T-shirt will stay stretched the width will lessen a bit. Repeat the stretching process once or twice after the washing. Then the T-shirt will have its new form permanently.

The modified T-shirt has got mid-thigh length. It means it covers a bit more than shorts, briefs etc. You can go through your flat without hesitation in the same way like in the nightshirt.

Recommendations for the producers

  Lengths

The length of the nightshirt is appointed by the majority producers between 110 and 120 cm (43 and 47") for every sizes. Such a length is maybe practical for the production but less for users. The unitary length doesn't respect the stature of the user. How it can look comic you can see in the picture. Both men have got correct length of the sleeves but incorrect length of the nightshirts. The length of the nightshirt is for smaller man too long, for taller man too short.

In my opinion, the elegant length is close above the knees or in the event of the long nightshirts a bit above ankles. I compiled the table of ready-made sizes and corresponded length of the nightshirts.

size S
circumference of chest   86 - 93 cm (34 - 36")
height of stature   166 - 173 cm (65 - 68")
recommended short length   95 cm (38")
recommended long length   130 cm (51")

size M
circumference of chest   94 - 101 cm (37 - 39")
height of stature   171 - 179 cm (68 - 70")
recommended short length   98 cm (39")
recommended long length   134 cm (53")

size L
circumference of chest   102 - 109 cm (40 - 42")
height of stature   177 - 184 cm (70 - 72")
recommended short length   101 cm (40")
recommended long length   138 cm (54")

size XL
circumference of chest   110 - 117 cm (43 - 45")
height of stature   182 - 188 cm (72 - 74")
recommended short length   104 cm (41")
recommended long length   142 cm (56")

size XXL
circumference of chest   118 - 125 cm (46 - 49")
height of stature   186 - 192 cm (74 - 76")
recommended short length   107 cm (42")
recommended long length   146 cm (57")

I would like to find in shops the short-sleeve-nightshirts with the short length and the long-sleeve-nightshirts with the short as well as long length. If it is necessary making the unitary length from the technological reasons I would recommended the short length 100 cm (39"), the long length 140 cm (55").

  Printmaking of the nightshirts

I offer some tips for the printmaking of the nightshirts. The tips can be the inspiration both for the producers and for the customers of copy centres which pursue print on the textile.

fans: sport club logo,
sportsmen: ball, bicycle, paddle, ice pick, parachute, pot over fire,
lovers of beer: brewery logo or distillery,
motorists: racing car, motorcycle, truck,
exotica: palms with rocking net, black woman, historicist motifs (Egypt, Greece etc.),
nudes: photos or pictures,
space: constellations, Saturn, rocket,
fairy tales with clever men,
animals: sleeping (badger, hedgehog, bear), neutral (dog, horse, spider, owl),
pattern: camouflage (maybe with sign US ARMY), like police uniform, like prisoner's clothes (the prisoner's nightshirt is possible to buy on www.rajptakovin.cz).

  Nightshirts for the advertising

Have you already got an advertising T-shirt? Have you got so many that you don't know what to do with them? If you had the luck and you got a rather bigger size, try to make from it the T-shirt for sleeping. Well, but why couldn't you get instead of the advertising T-shirts outright an advertising nightshirts, or more precisely said, a prolonged advertising T-shirts?

The advertising T-shirts are wore as home clothes. The nightshirts would ensure the same purpose. The advertising effect will be on the same level like for example folders for CDs, purses, folders for visiting cards, flasks, bottles of wine, tees and other 'useful' things. The nightshirts could add like the bonus with the products related with sleeping, for example mattresses, quilts, furniture, bathrooms etc. But also other firms would find connection with the nightshirts – why not have the calm sleep with our insurance company, power-station, mobile operator or new plastic windows? Also breweries could surprise their customers. The beer belly hides under the nightshirt more easily than under the pyjamas, after return from pub it is more easily dressing up of the nightshirt than to the pyjamas and in case of the urination it is more easily the nightshirt to tuck up than pyjama trousers to pull down.

Of course, it isn't difficult instead of classic T-shirt to make a bit longer T-shirt, for instance in the company colours and with the company logo. The universal length is about 95 cm (37") for size M to 105 cm (41") for size XXL, cut unisex. The production costs for the long T-shirt will be almost identical like in the event of the classic T-shirt.

The prolong T-shirts in the nightshirt style could be the advisable extension of the offer for the copy centres. They could make the original nightshirts while you wait. The customer would choose a picture either from the catalogue of printmakings or he/she would bring own picture or photo. It is sufficient to have in the store pure nightshirts of unisex style in white colour (here photo from Pleas) or light-grey shade.

  Responses of the nightshirt

At the finish, I am putting forward to you some positive as well as negative responses of the men's nightshirts. They are taken from Czech discussion forums.

... I am probably the progressive guy because I sleep in the nightshirt. My wife bought it for me last year at the Christmas. I can say that it is super feeling. I wouldn't exchange it instead of anything.

... I have already slept in the nightshirt about 16 years. ... Really, who once dressed the nightshirt he doesn't sleep in other, unless he is conservative and want 'striped' pyjamas only.

... Exactly how it is written in previous contributions – when I had tried sleeping in the nightshirt I haven't worn any pyjamas.

... I have slept in the nightshirt one year and I am not already able to fancy my live without it. ... I also know that for example German men sleep fundamentally in the nightshirts.

... I also bought the nightshirt for my boyfriend, rather from mischief-making. I was surprised – he has been absolutely satisfied and he has already got several nightshirts.

... I don't want to return to the pyjamas.

... I like the guy in the nightshirt. My guy sleeps also in the nightshirts only. He prefers rather longer nightshirts (such nightshirts are possible to find with a piece of luck) and he looks good in it.

... I sleep a lot of years in the nightshirt only. My partner is very satisfied with it.

... I prefer the satin nightshirts (they are light-weight, I don't sweat in them, and they are pleasing for my body).

... I study in Poland. I can see boys at lodgings, I visited also their college and their household. Most men and of course also of boys have slept in the nightshirts since childhood.

... The nightshirt never. I tried it once or twice some years ago and when I woke at morning my nightshirt was tucked to my neck.

... Gentlemen, I am at a loss, I don't like nightshirts on the men at all. My husband bought one – and looked in it... simply terribly.

... The men's nightshirts? You are fools, aren't you?

NO, WE AREN'T FOOLS.  WE JUST WANT THE NIGHTSHIRTS!
