East London Line

Project Status

On the 20th July 2004, Ken Livingstone, the Mayor of London released a press release stating that he wished to take over responsibility for delivering the East London Line Project and would fund phase one by using prudential borrowing approved by the Department for Transport. It is currently anticipated that the project will transfer from the Strategic Rail Authority to Transport for London in November 2004.

The East London Line Project (formerly known as ELLX) will extend and upgrade the existing (London Underground Limited) East London Line, converting it into a new metro-style (National Rail) train service. This will provide services that will ultimately extend North to Highbury & Islington, South to West Croydon and West to Clapham Junction and in the future could potentially facilitate ‘orbital’ journeys around London.

The project will be delivered in two phases. Phase one will extend the existing line north to Dalston Junction and south to Crystal Palace and West Croydon. Phase two will extend the line west to Clapham Junction and connect North London Line stations at Cannonbury and Highbury & Islington.

If the project is initiated in the near future, phase one could be delivered by June 2010. This would be in good time to support a successful Olympic bid. The website will be updated as more details emerge.

Phase One

Northern extension:

Phase 1 of the northern extension of this project will join the current East London Line just south of the existing Shoreditch Station. It will then head up onto a new viaduct on the northern part of the Bishopsgate Goods Yard, cross Shoreditch High Street and head north to Dalston Junction using the disused Kingsland viaduct. This will include new stations at Shoreditch High Street (to replace the existing Shoreditch station that will close), Hoxton, Haggerston and Dalston Junction. The route that runs parallel to the A10 that formerly supported the North London Line to Broad Street.

Southern extension:

The project will also extend from the existing station at New Cross Gate onto the National Rail network south, providing an all station services to Crystal Palace and West Croydon.

Phase Two

North London Line:

Services will be further extended north in phase 2 of the project using the western Curve at Dalston Junction. Stops at Cannonbury and Highbury & Islington will be added together with turnbacks west of Caledonian Road and Barnsbury station.

Western Extension:

The western extension will require a short section of track to be constructed linking the existing East London Line, from south of Surrey Quays, to the South London Line between South Bermondsey and Queens Road Peckham. The link will run at surface level along the western side of the Silwood Triangle, past the SELCHP plant, across Surrey Canal Road, through the western edge of Bridge House Meadows, over the eastern end of Hornshay Street and join the existing National Rail network just north of Wagner Street. A new station will be inserted at Surrey Canal Road before trains continue an all stations service to Clapham Junction.
