"Grrrl/Queer/Feminist Zines": The 7th lecture
memorandum (some part of lecture contents)
***************
In this lecture, we examined the 'historicizing' of the Riot Grrrl movement.
Part of the resources of the Riot Grrrl movement is preserved in some university libraries.
*ex. The Riot Grrrl Collection (The Fales Collection at New York University)
And the textbook (introductory book) of the Riot Grrrl movement for teens has been made.
*ex. Turner, Chérie, 2001, The Riot Grrrl Movement: The Feminism of a New Generation (Everything You Need to Know About), New York: The Rosen Publishing Group, Inc.
I think this situation has merits and demerits.
[merits]
- The achievement for the Riot Grrrl movement has come to be recognized adequately and evaluated historically.
- For researchers, feminists, activists, and music fans, accessing the Riot Grrrls' productions has come to be easier.
- The education about the Riot Grrrl movement to a young generation became easier.
[demerits]
- There is a risk that the Riot Grrrl movement could be treated as 'a thing of the past'.
- There is a risk that only some representative persons and magazines that were left as records could become 'authorities'.
- There is a risk that only the superficial images of the Riot Grrrl could willfully be diverted (commercially/politically).
It will be necessary for us to confirm these both sides precisely.
