"One's body must be respected as one's person, for the morality of mutual respect secures one's possession of one's self, and one's claims against others who would use one's body or one's talents without one's permission. Again, since spatiotemporally extended persons must occupy space, to act against that space or place is to act against such persons themselves. Such non-consented-to interference would be an action against the very notion of mutual respect and the peaceable community." (Engelhardt 1986=1989:128)
"As Hegel argues, in the ownership of things the right to the forbearance of others with respect to one's own body is extended to objects one has formed. Taking possession of objects is a process of fashioning them, forming them, transforming them in the image and likeness of one's ideas and according to one's will. It is a way of incorporating things within one's own domain. In this fashion, one increases the sphere of one's own domain. In this fashion, one increases the sphere of one's embodiment and extends the border of one's rights to the forbearance of others. Things that are untransformed by others one may freely transform for one's own purposes. Things that one has impressed with one's ideas will become one's own insofar as one has fashioned them and has not abandoned them through lack of use, and they may not be altered or changed by others without one's permission, except insofar as the others have some prior right in those objects." (Engelhardt 1986:33=1989:130)
