early 15c., topographie, "description of a place," in earliest use in reference to a particular book (the Topographia Hibernica of Geraldus Cambrensis), from Late Latin topographia, from Greek topographia "a description of a place," from topos "place" (see topos) + -graphia (see -graphy).
