The creation of an organization like this was agreed by the IOC Executive Board at their meeting on 2 December 1981 in Sarajevo. On 26 May 1982, led by Marc Hodler of Switzerland and the International Ski Federation, the Winter Sports Federations formed their own group, the Association of International Winter Sports Federations (AIWF). The name was changed at a meeting held in Sydney in 2000. The AIOWF deals with specific questions concerning winter sports in general, and the Olympic Winter Games, in particular. It is also responsible for choosing the delegations and appointments of the winter sports representative to IOC Commissions. The group is based in Zürich, Switzerland.
