     William Norman Birkett, 1st Baron Birkett was born on 6 September 1883.1 He was the son of Thomas Birkett and Agnes Tyson.1,2 He married Ruth Nilsson, daughter of Emil Nilsson, on 25 August 1920.1 He died on 10 February 1962 at age 78.1
     He was educated at Barrow-in-Furness Grammar School, Barrow-in-Furness, Lancashire, EnglandG.1 He graduated from Emmanuel College, Cambridge University, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, EnglandG, with a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.)1 He graduated from Emmanuel College, Cambridge University, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, EnglandG, with a Master of Arts (M.A.)2 He was admitted to Inner Temple in 1913 entitled to practise as a Barrister-at-Law.2 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Liberal) for Nottingham East between December 1923 and October 1924.2 He was appointed King's Counsel (K.C.) in 1924.2 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.)      Ruth Nilsson was the daughter of Emil Nilsson.1 She married William Norman Birkett, 1st Baron Birkett, son of Thomas Birkett and Agnes Tyson, on 25 August 1920.1 She died in 1969.1
     From 25 August 1920, her married name became Birkett.1 After her marriage, Ruth Nilsson was styled as Baroness Birkett on 31 January 1958.
