Thomas Michael Jopling, Baron Jopling usually went by his middle name of Michael.1 He was educated at Cheltenham College, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, EnglandG.3 He graduated from Newcastle University, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Northumberland, EnglandG, with a Bachelor of Science, Agriculture (B.Sc.Agric.)3 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Conservative) for Westmorland between 1964 and 1983.3 He was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.) in 1979.3 He held the office of Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food between 1983 and 1987.3 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Conservative) for Westmorland and Lonsdale between 1983 and 1997.3 He held the office of Deputy Lieutenant (D.L.) of Cumbria between 1991 and 1997.1,4 He held the office of Deputy Lieutenant (D.L.) of North Yorkshire in 1997.4 He was created Baron Jopling, of Ainderby Quernhow in the County of North Yorkshire [U.K. Life Peer] on 5 June 1997.1
