John Mackay, 2nd Lord Reay was born circa 1612.1 He was the son of Donald Mackay, 1st Lord Reay and Barbara Mackenzie.2,3 He married, secondly, Barbara Mackay, daughter of Hugh Mackay, 2nd of Scourie and Ann Corbet of Arkboll.4 He married, firstly, Isabel Sinclair, daughter of George Sinclair, 5th Earl of Caithness and Lady Jean Gordon, in 1636.1 He died after 1680.1
He succeeded as the 2nd Baronet Mackay [N.S., 1627] in February 1649.5 He succeeded as the 2nd Lord Reay, of Reay, co. Caithness [S., 1628] in February 1649.1,5 A royalist during the Civil War.5 He held the office of Justice of the Peace (J.P.) for Sutherland in 1663.5

Sir Alexander Sutherland, 1st Lord Duffus was born circa 1621.1 He was the son of William Sutherland of Duffus and Jean Grant.2,3 He married, firstly, Lady Jean Mackenzie, daughter of Colin Mackenzie, 1st Earl of Seaforth and Lady Margaret Seton, before 1644.1 He married, secondly, Jean Innes, daughter of Rt. Hon. Sir Robert Innes of that Ilk, 1st Bt. and Lady Grizel Stuart, on 13 January 1653.4 He married, thirdly, Lady Margaret Stuart, daughter of James Stuart, 4th Earl of Moray and Lady Margaret Home, in 1654.4 He married, fourthly, Margaret Forbes, daughter of William Forbes, 11th Lord Forbes and Jean Campbell, circa 1668.4 He died on 31 August 1674.1
He was appointed Knight circa 1643.2 He held the office of Governor of Perth, although he was compelled to surrender it to Cromwell.2 He was created 1st Lord Duffus [Scotland] (styled as This patent was lost, but presumably it had the standard rights of succession to heirs male of the body of the grantee) on 8 December 1650.2 In 1654 he was fined £1,000 by Cromwell.2 He was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.) [Scotland] in 1660.2
