     He was educated between 1911 and 1916 at Merchiston Castle School, Edinburgh, Midlothian, ScotlandG.1 He was educated at Royal Military College, Sandhurst, Berkshire, EnglandG.1 He fought in the First World War.1 He was commissioned on 21 December 1917 with the rank of 2nd Lieutenant, in the service of the 3rd Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.1 He was awarded the Military Cross (M.C.) on 28 September 1918.1
