Maurice Berkeley Portman was born on 17 January 1833 at Bryanston, Dorset, England.2,3 He was the son of Edward Berkley Portman, 1st Viscount Portman of Bryanston and Lady Emma Lascelles.1,4 He was baptised on 19 January 1833 at Bryanston, Dorset, England.3 He married, firstly, Helen Vidal Harris, daughter of Captain John Harris and Amelia Ryerse, on 4 June 1856 at London, Ontario, Canada.5,3 He married, secondly, Evelyn Harriet Lavinia Portman, daughter of Henry William Berkeley Portman and Harriet Emily Cavendish Sturt, on 3 October 1867 at Wimborne Minster, Dorset, England.2,3 He died on 12 January 1888 at age 54 at Ashfield House, North Petherton, Somerset, England.2,3
     He held the office of Member of the Legislative Assembly (M.L.A.) [Canada] between 1861 and 1863.2
