"Lilting" by Xinxuan Yang (@knight_whoo) - MArch II '24 for STU 1332: Housing Future: Reclaiming the Chicago 6-Flat as a Site for Architecture (instructors: Lap Chi Kwong & Alison Von Glinow)

"Lilting" explores a kind of infinite looseness in this compact, economically viable Chicago 6-Flat housing type. Using one classic floor plan of existing Chicago 6-Flat apartments as a foundation, in each of the units, the project tries to keep its integration characteristics and introduces various architectural elements to propose a prototype primarily set up by space division. The project continues to develop function arrangements, material, and details to unfold possibilities in this loose system. Furthermore, taking one 6-Flat as a community, the project investigates an innovative entrance sequence and choices of different ways to embrace the courtyard, the collective living.

Congratulations to the second-place recipients of the 2024 Plimpton-Poorvu Design Prize: Aaron Smithson (MArch + MUP ’25), Cat Chen (MArch ’25), and Maggie Weese (MUP + MPH ’24)!

Walnut Park Place is a 29-unit affordable homeownership development in the Egleston Square area of Roxbury. Designed with sensitivity to both its physical context and the stated needs and desires of local residents, the project leverages both public sources and residential cross subsidy to provide middle-income Roxbury families with an increasingly rare opportunity to establish enduring roots in a fast-changing community. Walnut Park Place utilizes a family-centered design approach, incorporating a ground-floor daycare, a protected play space, larger units, and open-unit floor plans to better serve the needs of residents. The site’s “disguised density” approach strategically distributes the project’s massing to increase affordable ownership opportunities in Roxbury while ensuring the project remains contextual.

Congratulations to the second-place recipients of the 2024 Plimpton-Poorvu Design Prize: Chandler Caserta (MArch ’25), Austin Sun (MLA/MArch 24), Kei Takanami (MArch ‘25), and Amber Zeng (MArch ’25)!

Their project, “Connecting Gilman Square: A New Housing and Green Space Development”, proposes a 196,020 sq ft transit-oriented mixed-use building and public park in Somerville, Massachusetts. Given the current limited amount of open green space in Somerville, Connecting Gilman Square envisions a revitalized identity for Gilman Square through a new public landscape and building. It aims to create a community identity around a new transit station by introducing market rate and affordable housing, a public outdoor park, a grocery store, cafes, restaurants, artist workshops, and non-profit offices on two underutilized lots adjacent to the new Gilman Square Station.

The GSD announces its fall 2024 schedule of public programs and exhibitions, many of which offer interdisciplinary perspectives on conflict, power, and design as a means of communication.

In the series of events Democracy and Urban Form (October 9–10), Michael Sandel, Richard Sennett, and Diane Davis discuss how the design of our cities can empower citizens and facilitate modes of discourse essential to democratic societies.

Foregrounding global perspectives on the power dynamics underlying design history and practice, on October 7, Germane Barnes, winner of the 2021 Wheelwright Prize, presents “Where This Flower Blooms,” his research into North African building practices that were critical to Italian architecture throughout antiquity but erased in Eurocentric histories of design. In the 2024 Aga Khan Program Lecture, Iraqi landscape architect Jala Makhzoumi (October 22) searches for a grounded language for landscape architecture in the Middle East that captures the complexity of the English term “landscape.”

Fall programs explore the role of design in mitigating environmental degradation while bolstering social equity and deepening our connections with nature. Anne Whiston Spirn poses direct questions about the connection between climate change and urban landscapes in her lecture, “Restoring Nature, Rebuilding Community” (October 29), while Chelina Odbert (September 12) addresses 15 years of her “mission-driven,” community-engaged design.

Other highlights include presentations by Sean Godsell, Anne Whiston Spirn, Farshid Moussavi, and Bas Smets.

All programs take place in Gund Hall, are open to the public, and will be simultaneously streamed to the GSD’s website, unless otherwise noted.

Congratulations to Melanie Louterbach @mel_louterbach (MLA I ’24), whose project "Insurgent Geology: Mineral Matters in the Arctic" won the Thesis Prize in Landscape Architecture @gsd_mla at the 2024 commencement!

“Insurgent Geology” is about oil, fossils, power, and people. It is about blowing up pipelines and taking care of the soil. Shifting from deep time to speculative near future, it calls for both insurrection and geo-poetics for environmental and social justice in the Arctic.

Projected in 2051, “Insurgent Geology” unearths past land trauma, speculates on the post-oil landscapes of Alaska, and investigates alternative geo-social practices and mineral kinships. It critiques geology as an extractive, neocolonial discipline and practice. It challenges the concept of the Museum of Natural History and explores novel methods to share geological knowledge to the public. A novel geo-social classification is proposed, and alternative geo-aesthetics are explored through the design of “mineral gardens” and “geo-memorials.”

“Insurgent Geology” reinterprets the concept of the Site and Non-Site. A counter-exhibition is designed (the non-site), paired with a pilgrimage through the extractive landscapes of Alaska. Following the oil from the outlet of the pipeline in Valdez town to the site of extraction in the Arctic slope, the pilgrimage is connected by site-specific interventions designed along the Trans-Alaska Pipeline System (the sites).
