The flow of the 4 series of Steel Angel Kurumi is a little enigmatic, but one thing is clear, and that is that this OVA takes place shortly after the original Steel Angel Kurumi TV series. Unlike the 2 TV series, which have ongoing plots, each of these 4 episodes is a stand alone story. You don’t have to watch the first TV season to watch these, but it helps make a few of the plot points make sense. On a final note, this OVA is probably only really going to appeal to those who liked the TV series and need one last fix. As a stand alone product, its pretty weak.
Animation: One of the stronger aspects of all the Steel Angel series is the animation. Character designs and backgrounds are interesting and a pleasure to look at. This part of the series takes place early in the 20th century and the feel of that era really comes through. Characters are each fairly distinctive in their look, and their looks tend to match their personalities well.
Sound: The music is somewhat catchy, although after hearing it a couple times I was content just to skip through the opening and closing credits. Sound effects are good, especially during combat sequences (which are much less common in the OVA than the TV series).
Story: Each 15 minute episode is a stand alone story. The first three focus on each of the 3 main steel angels in turn, while the fourth is a fairly fan-servicey episode which packs in pretty much the entire cast. All of the stories are fair, but none really shines, and the lack of a continuing plot that was so central to the TV series makes them feel a little empty.
Characters: the cast is the same as the original TV series, where they were reasonably well developed. The serious side of the characters is mostly gone for the OVA and the comedic side of their personalities is played up. As each of the first three episodes focuses on a single steel angel, we do get a little more insight into their characters, but in the end, much of the character is drawn from TV series and not a lot new develops for them in the OVA.
Value: This OVA is for people that liked the TV show and want more (but not too much more). It provides a decent laugh within its fairly compact size (running time 1 hour total) and rounds out a complete steel angel collection. As stated before, this OVA won’t offer a lot to someone who hasn’t seen the original TV series.
Entertainment: It’s a fine way to kill an hour. It is pretty funny in a situational kind of way, and there is always something to be said for pretty robot girls who can fly and beat the stuffing out of anything that crosses them. Nothing really jumps out as a reason to run out and get this series, but at the same time, nothing stands out to say don’t watch either. It’s a little better than average but not a lot.
