Harrowing Tales of Survival & Loss
I can’t imagine how those poor people up in both towers felt when they realized they were about to die. It was heavily reiterated in the book that many people in both towers had no reason to feel that the building they were in would tumble since they heard probably through the grapevine over their tenure that both buildings could withstand the impact of being hit by a jet. In fact, an interview recorded on January 25, 2001 for the History Channel by construction manager and 9/11 victim Frank A. DeMartini sees him boldly claiming both buildings could “probably sustain multiple impacts of jet liners because this structure is like a mosquito netting on your screen door, this intense grid, and the jet plane is just a pencil puncturing that screen netting, it really does nothing to the screen netting” (Frank A. De Martini. Construction Manager. World Trade Center (January 2001) 2019). Such prophetic words. Little did he know just eight short months later that “screen netting” he strongly believed would protect the building from a jet plane wouldn’t protect it at all and he and thousands of others would perish.
