The Dreyfus affair (French: l'affaire Dreyfus) was a political scandal that divided France in the 1890s and the early 1900s. It involved the conviction for treason in November 1894 of Captain Alfred Dreyfus, a young French artillery officer of Alsatian Jewish descent. Sentenced to life imprisonment for allegedly having communicated French military secrets to the German Embassy in Paris, Dreyfus was sent to the penal colony at Devil's Island in French Guiana and placed in solitary confinement, where he was to spend almost 5 years.
Two years later, in 1896, evidence came to light identifying a French Army major named Ferdinand Walsin Esterhazy as the real culprit. After high-ranking military officials suppressed the new evidence, a military court unanimously acquitted Esterhazy after the second day of his trial. The Army accused Dreyfus of additional charges based on false documents fabricated by a French counter-intelligence officer, Hubert-Joseph Henry, who was seeking to re-confirm Dreyfus's conviction. Henry's superiors accepted his documents without full examination.
Word of the military court's framing of Alfred Dreyfus and of an attendant cover-up began to spread, chiefly owing to J'accuse, a vehement public open letter published in a Paris newspaper in January 1898 by the notable writer Émile Zola. Progressive activists put pressure on the government to reopen the case.
In 1899 Dreyfus was brought to Rennes from Guiana for another trial. The intense political and judicial scandal that ensued divided French society between those who supported Dreyfus (the Dreyfusards), such as Anatole France, Henri Poincaré and Georges Clemenceau, and those who condemned him (the anti-Dreyfusards), such as Hubert-Joseph Henry and Edouard Drumont, the director and publisher of the anti-semitic newspaper La Libre Parole. The new trial resulted in another conviction and a 10-year sentence, but Dreyfus was offered a pardon and set free.
Eventually, all the accusations against Alfred Dreyfus were demonstrated to be baseless. In 1906 Dreyfus was exonerated and reinstated as a major in the French Army. He served during the whole of World War I, ending his service with the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel. (wikipedia)

I'm absolutely THRILLED to see what you've done with this series.
What a great choice for a collaboration with Méliès: strong, realistic, a bit harsh in its beauty and interpretation. The dissonance, it contrasts but doesn't conflict, giving that "push me, pull you" feeling instead (especially about one thrd of the way through) for such a complicated (sometimes difficult) film series.
Thank you for making such a wonderful piece. It's like a special gift, just for me, that I get to share with everyone. You have such talent! I think we'll have to blog about this and feature it soon. However, please add "Georges Méliès" to the tags so people who search his work will find you and if you don't put this on your own page, please move it to Silent Films so it gets more attention.
I upload videos for many reasons, all of which seem altruistic. It's a lie. This is why I upload videos - hoping to give access to material that inspires artists, poets, film-makers, creators, musicians and composers so they make art for me to enjoy - and this is what makes the ever-shrinking public domain so very important and worth fighting for: without it, we would have nothing like this.
Speaking of which, check my bookmarks. I'm currently on a Méliès uploading binge and you now have many choices to inspire more videos. Don't forget to check out the Segundo de Chomón, too. They may suit you as well. And no excuses. I fully expect many creations from you now that I am aware of what you're capable of, and I am happy to feed you, and feed you well.
Now, go make me twenty or so more so I can eat them with my eyes and ears, download and bookmark them... Gen :)
