Summary
He’s sitting on the back of Kevin’s bike, one hand holding his shitty speaker and the other on the back rest, keeping him steady in place. They’ve found a rhythm now, the kind of ease that comes with practice, repetition.
Kevin’s back is an endless golden expanse in front of him, glistening with the sun, with the sea, with his fucking sweat, probably. Aaron watches the muscles work in his back, silently reciting them to himself.
It’s for the best that his hands are occupied. It means he never has to put his self-control up against the way Kevin’s back looks beneath the burning sun.
It’s a ritual now. Summer means the beach, means scalding hot sand beneath your feet and the sun searing at the back of your neck and Kevin Day in his stupid fucking beach shorts, riding up as he forces himself to run alongside the shore.

Summary
“You’re the most ridiculous person I’ve ever met,” Aaron says.
Kevin shrugs, unfazed. “I prefer to think of it as resourceful,” he says, bouncing up and down on the balls of his feet. Aaron watches his knees: up, down, up, down, up, down. He swallows.
“You would,” Aaron says, but he privately agrees. It’s still ridiculous, obviously, but arranging for your own personal mattress to be delivered to the Olympics is—technically—resourceful.
“You wouldn’t give Jean grief for this,” Kevin says.
Aaron snorts, rolling his eyes. “Jean once didn’t tell anyone he cracked a rib for three days,” he says dryly. “Getting a mattress personally delivered to Olympic Village because he’s a princess who needs his comfort isn’t exactly on the cards.”
You can be friends with someone, see, as long as you don’t have to think about any of the times they looked at you with such raw, burning intent that kissing would have made a more convincingly platonic alternative.
—it’s reunion season at the olympic village. kevin has a mattress delivered. aaron copes.

Summary
Aaron is very aware of how human Kevin is, in that he doesn’t buy into the myth and legend and knows the man too well to put him on a pedestal. But it’s a step further here. When Kevin dances, he looks like he’s still figuring it out. He looks like what he is: twenty years old, trying his best, wanting to feel something else for a moment.
Or maybe Aaron’s just projecting.
“You said you wanted to dance,” Kevin says, and Aaron’s eyes snap back to his face. They hadn’t strayed very far; just down the line of Kevin’s body, watching the way he moved. It’s the freedom, Aaron thinks. Like when Kevin dances, it’s because he wants to do it more than he wants to be good at it. There aren’t many things he can say that about, when it comes to Kevin Day.
He’s here. He’s alive, and Andrew is alive, and Nicky is alive, and Kevin and Katelyn and Wymack and Abby. And Matt and Randy; the girls too. Even Neil.
All these people are alive, even if they’re not okay. And Drake is dead. And Aaron made that happen.
—it's the end of the year, all of kevin’s usual dogs are gone, and aaron has a lot to think about.

Summary
There’s something fierce in the set of Aaron’s expression. Like he’s shoring himself up, gearing for a fight. Kevin’s seen him in a fight before. Kevin’s seen him grinning ferociously on the court, Kevin’s seen him covered in blood and holding a racquet in trembling hands, Kevin’s seen him dust-high on Eden’s dancefloor—
Kevin’s seen Aaron, and never quite managed to stop.
“What’s it?” Aaron asks, voice rough, eyes guarded. He’s so untrusting, even right now, even right here, but maybe that’s the only way you make it to twenty-two when you’re Aaron Minyard. Always waiting for the other shoe to drop.
Aaron is still looking over there, and Kevin doesn’t want to be the Son of Exy right now; he wants to be the boy who Aaron complains about psych majors to and offers bites of his pancakes to and grins up at over a scraped knee and grazed palms from the parking lot tarmac.

Summary
“He watches you,” Jean says.
Aaron looks up at that. “He has a staring problem sometimes,” he says. “Is he bothering you? I can tell him to fuck off.”
This is a marvel to Jean, who has scowled at Kevin Day a thousand times and chased away his too-keen gaze on Riko’s court a thousand more, but has never known how to not want him within reach.
A secret is that which is not known and not seen, that which is not meant to be known or seen. It is a thing that is to be kept. It can be precious or dangerous or too heavy to bear. It can be a sacrifice to hold dear. It can be a detriment to those who do. And yet, you bite your tongue. Tuck it behind your ribs. Hold it between your teeth, regardless of what it costs.
By this definition, Kevin Day is your secret.

Summary
“What’s their deal anyway?”
“Andrew’s afraid of romance,” Kevin answers, bored. With a little more concern, he asks, “I’m not on speakerphone, am I?” Aaron snorts and confirms he isn’t, and he’d have been fine anyway since there’s a whole closed door between him and Andrew. Kevin goes on. “But history suggests they will figure it out.” There’s a pause in which Aaron thinks Kevin wants him to be bolstered by his words, but he really is shit at offering any kind of real encouragement. Aaron flips his hand in the air and makes a noncommittal noise, and Kevin interprets that however he wants.
“Aaron,” Kevin says, serious. It’s a complete tonal shift, so Aaron braces for what he thinks he might say next. “You and I—we’re better at arguing than they are. Do you agree?”
“What,” Aaron says, relaxing but still exasperated, “are you talking about? Kevin, we argue all the time.”
“Yeah, but not about anything serious. Don’t pick a fight with me right now.”
Spoiler: Aaron does pick a fight with Kevin, and on the road to resolution, they acknowledge something new—or maybe not so new—about each other.

Bookmarker's Notes
He doesn’t say any of that. What he does say is, “You’re so annoying,” in the most aggrieved voice he can manage.
Kevin breezes past that. “Date me,” he says again, more insistent.
Aaron takes his hand away from his nose and makes several cutting gestures before he decides on what to say next. “You’re not dateable.”
“No—what? Fuck you, I totally am. I told you not to pick a fight with me.”

Summary
“I’m not in denial,” Aaron says plainly. It’s not his own feelings he was ever worried about, he realizes—it’s always been the threat of Kevin’s that scares the shit out of him. Kevin, who has never known how to follow posted speed limits and runs reds because he can, because no one has ever told him he shouldn’t, probably likes him. Probably definitely. He’s afraid that one day he’ll realize he doesn’t.
Maybe that’s the heart of the issue. There’s precedence for this. Aaron has spent a long time being jerked around by people who love him for a period. It hurts, still, that his mother doesn’t know how to want him; that Andrew’s apathy is hard to interpret as caring sometimes; that Katelyn decided it wasn’t working after all. But that’s not very accurate data. Not that it matters. Kevin and him were never supposed to be together—that was their agreement.

Bookmarker's Notes
Aaron wants to enact violence—is thrumming with it—and he totally would have if Kevin didn’t bend forward to push his lips against his. It’s a slow, lazy sort of kiss, the kind that makes Aaron’s heart surge and swell without his consent. A problem, one that reminds him he is outside the bounds of their agreement. But that’s impossible for Aaron to think about when Kevin whispers, “Bed?” against his mouth. Aaron exchanges the no at the tip of his tongue for a yes and decides, in the spirit of not making his birthdays shitty anymore, that he’d set aside the problem and contemplate it tomorrow.

“Matt thought I meant porn,” Neil announces his presence as soon as he opens the entrance door. Kevin’s head whips back to look at him. He’s not sure this is the preferred alternative to Neil stalking over his shoulder. “I tried to tell him it was actual sausages that you hid so quickly, but then he thought I meant gay porn and couldn’t decide whether or not he wanted to know the details, so I left. I think I’ve figured it out, anyway.”
“You’re telling Matt about what you see on my laptop?” Kevin could feel the blood drain from his face and return just as quickly to collect inside his skull. “Are you normal? Are you a normal human being with any sense of—don’t actually answer that, you moron, it’s rhetorical, you’re clearly not. Close your mouth. I want to kill you.”
“Do you like men?”
“Don’t talk to me,” Kevin demanded.

She couldn’t look at him. She couldn’t look at Aaron. Drake’s victim and Drake’s killer, twin faces, two sides of a flipped coin, spinning and spinning in the air, that would always land on pain for her.

Summary
It’s the way Jean watches his own hands as he guides the thread through the paper, pulling the gathering tight to the spine. It’s the way Jean bends, strong and handsome, over a tiny embroidery hoop to get the details exactly right. Jeremy Knox is supposed to be spending his senior year worrying about what comes next. Instead, he’s mesmerized as he watches each stitch come to life and finds, there in between the threads, something completely unexpected.

Bookmarker's Notes
A crush is fine. He can deal with that. He can deal with Jean’s attractiveness being more than objective these days. He can deal with the fact that sometimes he thinks about how nice it would be to just tuck a stray strand of Jean’s hair behind his ear, to get to the room after class and fall into Jean’s arms, to curl up against him to nap before a game, to hold his hand — just for a second— when they’re both nervous before a match… He can deal with the fact that whatever crushes he’s had before didn’t feel like this at all. He can even deal with the pit in his stomach that grows whenever he thinks about Jean and him going their separate ways after graduation, slowly losing contact; about Jean becoming someone he once knew.
He cannot, however, be popping boners every time he gets a look at Jean’s chest — let alone just his hands.
