We propose a novel low-rank tensor method for respiratory motion-resolved multi-echo image reconstruction. The key idea is to construct a 3-way image tensor (space $\times$ echo $\times$ motion state) from the conventional gridding reconstruction of highly undersampled multi-echo k-space raw data, and exploit low-rank tensor structure to separate it from undersampling artifacts. Healthy volunteers and patients with iron overload were recruited and imaged on a 3T clinical MRI system for this study. Results show that our proposed method Successfully reduced severe undersampling artifacts in respiratory motion-state resolved complex source images, as well as subsequent R2* and quantitative susceptibility mapping (QSM). Compared to conventional respiratory motion-resolved compressed sensing (CS) image reconstruction, the proposed method had a reconstruction time at least three times faster, accounting for signal evolution along the echo dimension in the multi-echo data.

We propose a novel respiratory motion-resolved MR image reconstruction method that jointly treats multi-echo k-space raw data. Continuously acquired non-Cartesian multi-echo/multi-coil k-space data with free breathing are sorted/binned into the motion states from end-expiratory to end-inspiratory phases based on a respiratory motion signal. Temporal total variation applied to the motion state dimension of each echo is then coupled in the $\ell_2$ sense for joint reconstruction of the multiple echoes. Reconstructed source images of the proposed method are compared with conventional echo-by-echo motion-resolved reconstruction, and R2* of the proposed and echo-by-echo methods are compared with respect to a clinical reference. We demonstrate that inconsistency between echoes is successfully suppressed in the proposed joint reconstruction method, producing high-quality source images and R2* measurements compared to clinical reference.

By use of ultrasound studies we resolved magneto-acoustic quantum oscillation deep into the mixed state of the multiband nonmagnetic superconductor YNi2B2C. Below the upper critical field, only a very weak additional damping appears that can be well explained by the field inhomogeneity caused by the flux-line lattice in the mixed state. This is clear evidence for no or a vanishingly small gap for one of the bands, namely, the spheroidal alpha band. This contrasts de Haas--van Alphen data obtained by use of torque magnetometry for the same sample, with a rapidly vanishing oscillation signal in the mixed state. This points to a strongly distorted flux-line lattice in the latter case that, in general, can hamper a reliable extraction of gap parameters by use of such techniques.

Cuprate materials, like those hosting high temperature superconductivity, represent a famous class of materials where the correlations between the strongly entangled charges and spins produce complex phase diagrams. Several years ago the Zhang-Rice singlet was proposed as a natural quasiparticle in hole-doped cuprates. The occurance and binding energy of this quasiparticle, consisting of a pair of bound holes with antiparallel spins on the same CuO$_4$ plaquette, depends on the local electronic interactions, which are fundamental quantities for understanding the physics of the cuprates. Here, we employ state-of-the-art Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering (RIXS) to probe the correlated physics of the CuO$_4$ plaquettes in the quasi-one dimensional chain cuprate Li$_2$CuO$_2$. By tuning the incoming photon energy to the O $K$-edge, we populate bound states related to the Zhang-Rice quasiparticles in the RIXS process. Both intra- and interchain Zhang-Rice singlets are observed and their occurrence is shown to depend on the nearest-neighbor spin-spin correlations, which are readily probed in this experiment. We also extract the binding energy of the Zhang-Rice singlet and identify the Zhang-Rice triplet excitation in the RIXS spectra.

Orbital ordering has recently emerged as another important state in iron based superconductors, and its role for superconductivity as well as its connection to magnetic order and orthorhombic lattice distortion are heavily debated. In order to search for signatures of this so-called nematic phase in oxypnictides, we revisit the normal state properties of the pnictide superconductor LaFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_x$ with a focus on resistivity, Nernst effect, thermal expansion, and $^{75}$As NMR data. The transport properties at the underdoped level $x=0.05$ exhibit pronounced anomalies at about the same temperature where undoped LaFeAsO develops long-range nematic ordering, i.e. at about 160 K. Furthermore, the $^{75}$As-NMR spin-lattice relaxation rate $1/(T_1T)$ reveals a progressive slowing down of spin fluctuations. Yet, long-range magnetic order and also a detectable orthorhombic lattice distortion are absent. Thus, we conclude from the data that short-range orbital-nematic ordering or a slowly fluctuating form of it sets in near 160 K. Remarkably, all anomalies in the transport and also the indications of slow spin fluctuations disappear close to optimal doping $x=0.1$ which suggests that in LaFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_x$ the nematic phase actually competes with superconductivity.

Strongly correlated insulators are broadly divided into two classes: Mott-Hubbard insulators, where the insulating gap is driven by the Coulomb repulsion $U$ on the transition-metal cation, and charge-transfer insulators, where the gap is driven by the charge transfer energy $Δ$ between the cation and the ligand anions. The relative magnitudes of $U$ and $Δ$ determine which class a material belongs to, and subsequently the nature of its low-energy excitations. These energy scales are typically understood through the local chemistry of the active ions. Here we show that the situation is more complex in the low-dimensional charge transfer insulator Li$_\mathrm{2}$CuO$_\mathrm{2}$, where $Δ$ has a large non-electronic component. Combining resonant inelastic x-ray scattering with detailed modeling, we determine how the elementary lattice, charge, spin, and orbital excitations are entangled in this material. This results in a large lattice-driven renormalization of $Δ$, which significantly reshapes the fundamental electronic properties of Li$_\mathrm{2}$CuO$_\mathrm{2}$.

Using nuclear quadrupole resonance, the phase diagram of 1111 $R$FeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_x$ ($R$$=$La, Ce, Sm) iron pnictides is constructed as a function of the local charge distribution in the paramagnetic state, which features low-doping-like (LD-like) and high-doping-like (HD-like) regions. Compounds based on magnetic rare earths (Ce, Sm) display a unified behavior, and comparison with La-based compounds reveals the detrimental role of static iron $3d$ magnetism on superconductivity, as well as a qualitatively different evolution of the latter at high doping. It is found that the LD-like regions fully account for the orthorhombicity of the system, and are thus the origin of any static iron magnetism. Orthorhombicity and static magnetism are not hindered by superconductivity but limited by dilution effects, in agreement with 2D (respectively 3D) nearest-neighbor square lattice site percolation when the rare earth is nonmagnetic (respectively magnetic). The LD-like regions are not intrinsically supportive of superconductivity, on the contrary of the HD-like regions, as evidenced by the well-defined Uemura relation between the superconducting transition temperature and the superfluid density when accounting for the proximity effect. This leads us to propose a complete description of the interplay of ground states in 1111 pnictides, where nanoscopic regions compete to establish the ground state through suppression of superconductivity by static magnetism, and extension of superconductivity by proximity effect.

Magnetic materials are usually divided into two classes: those with localised magnetic moments, and those with itinerant charge carriers. We present a comprehensive experimental (spectroscopic ellipsomerty) and theoretical study to demonstrate that these two types of magnetism do not only coexist but complement each other in the Kondo-lattice metal, Tb2PdSi3. In this material the itinerant charge carriers interact with large localised magnetic moments of Tb(4f) states, forming complex magnetic lattices at low temperatures, which we associate with self-organisation of magnetic clusters. The formation of magnetic clusters results in low-energy optical spectral weight shifts, which correspond to opening of the pseudogap in the conduction band of the itinerant charge carriers and development of the low- and high-spin intersite electronic transitions. This phenomenon, driven by self-trapping of electrons by magnetic fluctuations, could be common in correlated metals, including besides Kondo-lattice metals, Fe-based and cuprate superconductors.

We study the interplay of magnetic and superconducting order in single crystalline hole doped Ba1-xNaxFe2As2 using muon spin relaxation. We find microscopic coexistence of magnetic order and superconductivity. In a strongly underdoped specimen the two forms of order coexist without any measurable reduction of the ordered magnetic moment by superconductivity, while in a nearly optimally doped sample the ordered magnetic moment is strongly suppressed below the superconducting transition temperature. This coupling can be well described within the framework of an effective two-band model incorporating inter- and intra-band interactions. In optimally doped Ba1-xNaxFe2As2 we observe no traces of static or dynamic magnetism and the temperature dependence of the superfluid density is consistent with two s-wave gaps without nodes.

We have studied the magnetism of the Pr3+ ions in PrFeAsO_1-xF_x (x = 0; 0.15) and its interaction with the Fe magnetic order (for x = 0). Specific heat data confirm the presence of a first excited crystal electric field (CEF) level around 3.5 meV in the undoped compound PrFeAsO. This finding is in agreement with recent neutron scattering experiments. The doped compound is found to have a much lower first CEF splitting of about 2.0 meV. The Pr ordering in PrFeAsO gives rise to large anomalies in the specific heat and the thermal expansion coefficient. In addition, a field-induced transition is found at low temperatures that is most pronounced for the magnetostriction coefficient. This transition, which is absent in the doped compound, is attributed to a reversal of the Fe spin canting as the antiferromagnetic Pr order is destroyed by the external magnetic field.

Unlike Bridgman or Czochralsky grown Cu2MnAl, our floating zone grown single-crystals show highly reproducible magnetic properties and an excellent crystal quality with a narrow and homogeneous mosaic spread as examined by neutron diffraction. An investigation of the polarizing properties in neutron scattering suggests a high polarization efficiency, limited by the relatively small sample dimensions studied. Single crystals of Ba$_{1-x}$Na$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$ with $x$ = 0, 0.25, 0.35, 0.4 were grown using a self-flux high temperature solution growth technique. The superconducting and normal state properties were studied by temperature dependent magnetic susceptibility, electrical resistivity and specific heat revealing that the magnetic and structural transition is rapidly suppressed upon Na-substitution at the Ba-site in BaFe$_2$As$_2$, giving rise to superconductivity. A superconducting transition as high as 34 K is reached for a Na-content of $x$=0.4. The positive Hall coefficient confirms that the substitution of Ba by Na results in hole-doping similarly to the substitution of Ba by K. Angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy was performed on all Ba$_{1-x}$Na$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$ crystals. The Fermi surface of hole-doped Ba$_{1-x}$Na$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$ is to high extent the same as the Fermi surface found for the K-doped sister compounds, suggesting a similar impact of the substitution of Ba by either K or Na on the electronic band dispersion at the Fermi level

Point-contact (PC) investigations on the title compound in the normal and superconducting (SC) state (Tc=10,6 K) are presented. The temperature dependence of the SC gap of TmNi2B2C determined from Andreev-reflection (AR) spectra using the standard single-gap approximation (SGA) deviates from the BCS behavior in displaying a maximum at about Tc/2. A refined analysis within the two-gap approximation provides evidence for the presence of a second gap twice as large as the main gap (the first one), while the latter is close to that within the SGA. This way, TmNi2B2C expands the number of nickel borocarbide superconductors which exhibit a clear multiband character. Additionally, for the first time "reentrant" features were found in the AR spectra for some PCs measured in a magnetic field. The PC spectroscopy of the electron-boson interaction in TmNi2B2C in the normal state reveals a pronounced phonon maximum at 9.5meV and a more smeared one around 15 meV, while at higher energies the PC spectra are almost featureless. Additionally, the most intense peak slightly above 3meV observed in the PC spectra of TmNi2B2C is presumably caused by crystalline-electric-field (CEF) excitations. The peak near 1meV detected for some PC spectra is connected with a modification of the CEF probably due to boron or carbon vacancies, allowing to probe the local stoichiometry by PC spectroscopy.

We study the impact of a weak bond disorder on the spinon heat transport in the S=1/2 antiferromagnetic (AFM) Heisenberg chain material Sr_{1-x}Ca_xCuO_2. We observe a drastic suppression in the magnetic heat conductivity kappa_mag even at tiny disorder levels (i.e., Ca-doping levels), in stark contrast to previous findings for kappa_mag of S=1/2 two-dimensional square lattice and two-leg spin-ladder systems, where a similar bond disorder has no effect on kappa_mag. Hence, our results underpin the exceptional role of integrability of the S=1/2 AFM Heisenberg chain model and suggest that the bond disorder effectively destroys the ballistic nature of its heat transport. We further show that the suppression of kappa_mag is captured by an effective spinon-impurity scattering length, which exhibits the same doping dependence as the long-distance exponential decay length of the spin-spin correlation as determined by density-matrix renormalization group calculations.

Superconducting vortex lattices, glasses and liquids attract great interest as model systems of crystallization and as a source of microscopic information of the nature of superconductivity. We report for the first time direct microscopic measurements of the vortex lattice tilt modulus c44 in ultra-pure niobium using time-resolved small angle neutron scattering. Besides a general trend to faster vortex lattice dynamics for increasing temperatures we observe a dramatic changeover of the relaxation process associated with the non-trivial vortex lattice morphology in the intermediate mixed state. This changeover is attributed to a Landau-branching of the Shubnikov domains at the surface of the sample. Our study represents a showcase for how to access directly vortex lattice melting and the formation of vortex matter states for other systems.

Platelet-like single crystals of the Ca(Fe1-xCox)2As2 series having lateral dimensions up to 15 mm and thickness up to 0.5 mm were obtained from the high temperature solution growth technique using Sn flux. Upon Co doping, the c-axis of the tetragonal unit cell decreases, while the a-axis shows a less significant variation. Pristine CaFe2As2 shows a combined spin-density-wave and structural transition near T = 166 K which gradually shifts to lower temperatures and splits with increasing Co-doping. Both transitions terminate abruptly at a critical Co-concentration of xc = 0.075. For x \geq 0.05, superconductivity appears at low temperatures with a maximum transition temperature TC of around 20 K. The superconducting volume fraction increases with Co concentration up to x = 0.09 followed by a gradual decrease with further increase of the doping level. The electronic phase diagram of Ca(Fe1-xCox)2As2 (0 \leq x \leq 0.2) series is constructed from the magnetization and electric resistivity data. We show that the low-temperature superconducting properties of Co-doped CaFe2As2 differ considerably from those of BaFe2As2 reported previously. These differences seem to be related to the extreme pressure sensitivity of CaFe2As2 relative to its Ba counterpart.

We report a detailed investigation of GdO$_{1-x}$F$_{x}$FeAs (x = 0, 0.07 and 0.14) samples by means of high-field/high-frequency electron spin resonance (HF-ESR) together with measurements of thermodynamic and transport properties. The parent GdOFeAs compound exhibits Fe long-range magnetic order below 128 K, whereas both doped samples do not show such order and are superconducting with T$_c$ = 20 K (x = 0.07) and T$_c$ = 45 K (x = 0.14). The Gd$^{3+}$ HF-ESR reveals an appreciable exchange coupling between Gd and Fe moments, through which the static magnetic order is clearly seen in the parent compound. Owing to this coupling, HF-ESR can probe sensitively the evolution of the magnetism in the FeAs planes upon F doping. It is found that in both superconducting samples, where the Fe long-range order is absent, there are short-range, static on the ESR time scale magnetic correlations between Fe spins. Their occurrence on a large doping scale may be indicative of the ground states' coexistence.

A key controversial issue concerns the additional damping observed in the vortex state. Here, we show results of μSR, dHvA, and SQUID magnetization measurements on borocarbide superconductors, indicating that a sharp drop observed in the dHvA amplitude just below H_{c2} is correlated with enhanced disorder of the vortex lattice in the peak-effect region, which significantly enhances quasiparticle scattering by the pair potential.

For the first time, phonons have been measured using resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) across the Cu K-edge in cupric oxide (CuO). Analyzing these spectra using an ultra-short core-hole lifetime approximation and exact diagonalization techniques, we can explain the essential inelastic features. The relative spectral intensities are related to the electron-phonon coupling strengths.

The scaling was performed using the energy scale Delta, the resistivity rho(Delta) and the residual resistivity rho0 as scaling parameters as well as applying a recently proposed model-independent scaling method (H. G. Luo, Y. H. Su, and T. Xiang, Phys. Rev. B 77, 014529 (2008)). The scaling parameters have been calculated and the compositional variation of Delta has been determined. The existence of a universal metallic rho(T) curve is interpreted as an indication of a single mechanism which dominates the scattering of the charge carriers in LaO1-xFxFeAs (x= 0.05 to 0.075 and 0.1 to 0.2) and SmO1-xFxFeAs (x = 0.06 to 0.1) .

The Nernst effect has recently proven as a sensitive probe for detecting unusual normal state properties of unconventional superconductors. Here we present a systematic study of the Nernst effect of the iron pnictide superconductor \laf with a particular focus on its evolution upon doping. For the parent compound we observe a huge negative Nernst coefficient accompanied with a severe violation of the Sondheimer cancellation in the spin density wave (SDW) ordered state. Surprisingly, an unusual and enhanced Nernst signal is also found at underdoping ($x=0.05$) despite the presence of bulk superconductivity and the absence of static magnetic order, strongly suggestive of SDW precursors at $T\lesssim150$ K. A more conventional normal state Nernst response is observed at optimal doping ($x=0.1$) where it is rather featureless with a more complete Sondheimer cancellation.

We investigate the critical current density and vortex dynamics in single crystals of Ca(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$)$_2$As$_2$ ($x$ = 0.051, 0.056, 0.065, and 0.073). The samples exhibit different critical temperatures and superconducting phase fractions. We show that in contrast to their Ba-based counterpart, the crystals do not exhibit a second peak in the field dependence of magnetization. The calculated composition-dependent critical current density ($j_{\rm c}$) increases initially with Co doping, maximizing at $x$ = 0.065, and then decreases. This variation in $j_{\rm c}$ follows the superconducting phase fractions in this series. The calculated $j_{\rm c}$ shows strong temperature dependence, decreasing rapidly upon heating. Magnetic relaxation measurements imply a nonlogarithmic dependence on time. We find that the relaxation rate is large, reflecting weak characteristic pinning energy. The analysis of temperature- and field-dependent magnetic relaxation data suggests that vortex dynamics in these compounds is consistent with plastic creeping rather than the collective creep model, unlike other 122 pnictide superconductors. This difference may cause the absence of the second peak in the field dependent magnetization of Ca(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$)$_2$As$_2$.

We report superconducting (SC) properties of stoichiometric LiFeAs (Tc = 17 K) studied by small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) and angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES). Although the vortex lattice exhibits no long-range order, well-defined SANS rocking curves indicate better ordering than in chemically doped 122-compounds. The London penetration depth of 210 nm, determined from the magnetic field dependence of the form factor, is compared to that calculated from the ARPES band structure with no adjustable parameters. Its temperature dependence is best described by a single isotropic SC gap of 3.0 meV, which agrees with the ARPES value of 3.1 meV and corresponds to the ratio 2Delta/kTc = 4.1, approaching the weak-coupling limit predicted by the BCS theory. This classifies LiFeAs as a weakly coupled single-gap superconductor, similar to conventional metals.

Biaxially textured LuNi2BC thin films with Tc up to 15.8 K and a residual resistivity ratio up to 15 have been prepared. The films were deposited on MgO(110) substrates using pulsed laser deposition from a stoichiometric target. Via the precise control of the deposition rate, a biaxial texture is favored within a broad range of the deposition temperature. The full epitaxial relationship between the borocarbide film, the \luo interface layer and the substrate is (110)[001]MgO II (110)[001]Lu2O3 II (001)[100]LuNi2B2C. A very sharp in--plane alignment of about 1\textdegree and an out--of--plane order of about 2.5\textdegree was achieved in the \luni layer. However, a systematic study using different deposition temperatures shows that the temperature is crucial for phase formation and appealing superconducting properties. Applying optimized deposition conditions, critical temperatures of up to 15.8 K and steep superconducting transitions of about 0.3 K are reproducibly obtained. We further analyzed the upper critical field Hc2 of one film deposited under optimized conditions. It was resistively measured along the [001] direction and fitted with a power law. The value of Hc2(0) = 9.82 T obtained from that fit is in very good agreement with single crystal data and the power exponent describing the positive curvature for small external magnetic fields of about 0.19 indicates a relatively low intraband scattering in the films.

The time of life of fermionic quasiparticles, the distribution of which in the momentum-energy space can be measured by angle resolved photoemission (ARPES), is the first quantity to look for fingerprints of interaction responsible for the superconducting pairing. Such an approach has been recently used for superconducting cuprates, but its direct application to pnictides was not possible due to essential three-dimensionality of the electronic band structure and magnetic ordering. Here, we report the investigation of the quasiparticle lifetime in LiFeAs, a non-magnetic stoichiometric superconductor with a well separated two-dimensional band. We have found two energy scales: the lower one contains clear fingerprints of optical phonon modes while the higher scale indicates a presence of strong electron-electron interaction. The result suggests that LiFeAs is a phonon mediated superconductor with strongly enhanced electronic density of states at the Fermi level.

The particular shape of the Fermi surface can give rise to a number of collective quantum phenomena in solids, such as density wave orderings or even superconductivity. In many new iron superconductors this shape, the 'nested' Fermi surface, is indeed observed, but its role in the formation of spin-density waves or superconductivity is not clear. We have studied the electronic structure of the non-magnetic LiFeAs (Tc~18K) superconductor using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. We find a notable absence of the Fermi surface nesting, strong renormalization of the conduction bands by a factor of three, high density of states at the Fermi level caused by a Van Hove singularity, and no evidence for either a static or fluctuating order except superconductivity with in-plane isotropic energy gaps. Our observations set a new hierarchy of the electronic properties necessary for the superconductivity in iron pnictides and, possibly, in other materials.

The irradiation of the polycrystalline sample by "moderate" neutron fluence of $Φ=(0;0.5;1.6)\cdot10^{19}cm^{-2}$ at $T=50^{\circ}C$ leads to the suppression of superconductivity. It is shown that neutron irradiation produces an anisotropic expansion of the tetragonal lattice almost due to an increase of the Fe-As distance. A partial loss of the 2D character of the FeAs layer is accompanied with a suppression of the gap-like feature in temperature dependence of the spin susceptibility. In the most disordered state the $^{75}$As spin-lattice relaxation rate follows the Korringa law $^{75}T_1^{-1} \sim T$, the thermal behavior being typical for an isotropic motion of the conducting electrons.

Whereas clean samples show almost no PLB for fields below 60 to 70 T, the hitherto unexplained pronounced flattening of B_c2(T) for applied fields H II ab observed for several disordered closely related systems is interpreted also as a manifestation of PLB. Consequences are discussed in terms of disorder effects within the frames of (un)conventional superconductivity, respectively.

An extremely large spinon mean free path of more than a micrometer demonstrates that $κ_{mag}$ is only limited by extrinsic scattering processes which is a clear signature of ballistic transport in the underlying spin model.

Polycrystalline samples of RO1-xFxFeAs (0 < x < 0.25) (R = La, Sm, Gd) were investigated by wavelength-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (WDX) in the electron microscope to determine the composition of the samples, in particular the fluorine content. It was found that the measured fluorine content can deviate considerably from the initial weight. In the lanthanum compound LaO1-xFxFeAs, we found good agreement mainly for x > 0.05, but for x < 0.05 the fluorine hardly goes into the sample. For the samarium compound we measured less than half the fluorine in the sample as initially weighed at all fluorine concentrations. These measured values are taken into account when drawing the electronic phase diagrams of LaO1-xFxFeAs and SmO1-xFxFeAs. This leads to a more consistent picture of both of the diagrams in comparison to the plot of the initial weight.

This flattening is interpreted as Pauli limiting behaviour (PLB) with B_(c2)(0) approx 63 T. We compare our results with B_(c2)(T)-data reported in the literature for clean and disordered samples. Whereas clean samples show no PLB for fields below 60 to 70 T, the hitherto unexplained flattening of B_(c2)(T) for applied fields H || ab observed for several disordered closely related systems is interpreted also as a manifestation of PLB. Consequences of our results are discussed in terms of disorder effects within the frame of conventional and unconventional superconductivity.

DyRh4B4 has been known to crystallize in the primitive tetragonal (pt)-structure and to exhibit a ferromagnetic transition at 12 K, the highest magnetic transition temperature in the entire series of the RRh4B4 materials [1]. We show here that our silicon-added samples of the nominal composition DyRh4B4Si0.2 exhibit superconductivity below Tc ~ 4.5 K and an antiferromagnetic transition below TN ~ 2.7 K. The 12 K transition observed in the pt-DyRh4B4 is completely suppressed. Our annealed samples mainly consist of domains of the chemical composition DyRh3.9B4.2Si0.08. These domains contain two crystallographic phases belonging to the body-centred tetragonal (bct)-structure and the orthorhombic (o)-structure. We have reasons to suggest that superconductivity and antiferromagnetic ordering arise from bct- DyRh4B4 phase and, therefore, coexist below TN ~ 2.7 K.

The irradiation of the sample by a moderate neutron fluence F = 1.6*1019 cm^-2 at Tirr = 50 +- 10 C leads to the suppression of superconductivity which recovers almost completely after annealing at temperatures Tann < 750 C. It is shown that the reduction of superconducting transition temperature Tc under atomic disordering is not determined solely by the value of Hall concentration nH, i.e. doping level, but is governed by the reduction of electronic relaxation time. This behavior can be described qualitatively by universal Abrikosov-Gorkov equation which presents evidence on the anomalous type of electrons pairing in Fe-based superconductors.

We report zero field muon spin relaxation (muSR) measurements on RFeAsO with R = La, Ce, Pr, and Sm. We study the interaction of the FeAs and R (rare earth) electronic systems in the non superconducting magnetically ordered parent compounds of RFeAsO{1-x}Fx superconductors via a detailed comparison of the local hyperfine fields at the muon site with available Moessbauer spectroscopy and neutron scattering data. These studies provide microscopic evidence of long range commensurate magnetic Fe order with the Fe moments not varying by more than 15 % within the series RFeAsO with R = La, Ce, Pr, and Sm. At low temperatures, long range R magnetic order is also observed. Different combined Fe and R magnetic structures are proposed for all compounds using the muon site in the crystal structure obtained by electronic potential calculations. Our data point to a strong effect of R order on the iron subsystem in the case of different symmetry of Fe and R order parameters resulting in a Fe spin reorientation in the R ordered phase in PrFeAsO. Our symmetry analysis proves the absence of collinear Fe--R Heisenberg interactions in RFeAsO. A strong Fe--Ce coupling due to non--Heisenberg anisotropic exchange is found in CeFeAsO which results in a large staggered Ce magnetization induced by the magnetically ordered Fe sublattice far above T_N{Ce}. Finally, we argue that the magnetic R--Fe interaction is probably not crucial for the observed enhanced superconductivity in RFeAsO{1-x}Fx with a magnetic R ion.

We report theoretical values for the unscreened plasma frequencies Omega_p of several Fe pnictides obtained from DFT based calculations within the LDA and compare them with experimental plasma frequencies obtained from reflectivity data. The sizable renormalization observed for all considered compounds points to the presence of many-body effects beyond the LDA. From the large empirical background dielectric constant of about 12-15, we estimate a large arsenic polarizability of about 9.5 +- 1.2 Angstroem^3 where the details depend on the polarizabilities of the remaining ions taken from the literature. This large polarizability can significantly reduce the value of the Coulomb repulsion U_d about 4 eV on iron known from iron oxides to a level of 2 eV or below. In general, this result points to rather strong polaronic effects as suggested by G.A. Sawatzky et al., in Refs. arXiv:0808.1390 and arXiv:0811.0214 (Berciu et al.). Possible consequences for the conditions of a formation of bipolarons are discussed, too. From the extrapolated muon spin rotation penetration depth data at T= 0 and the experimental Omega_p we estimate the total coupling constant lambda_tot for the el-boson interaction within the Eliashberg-theory adopting a single band approximation. For LaFeAsO_0.9F_0.1 a weak to intermediately strong coupling regime and a quasi-clean limit behaviour are found. For a pronounced multiband case we obtain a constraint for various intraband coupling constants which in principle allows for a sizable strong coupling in bands with either slow electrons or holes.

Above the structural transition, the thermal expansion coefficient of LaFeAsO is significantly enhanced. This is attributed to fluctuations, which also affect the electrical transport properties of the compound. The complete absence of these fluctuations in the superconducting samples even for x = 0.05 is taken as evidence for an abrupt first-order type of suppression of the structural and magnetic transitions upon F doping.

We report a comprehensive small-angle neutron scattering study of the FLL in an ultra-pure single crystal of Nb as a function of the orientation of the applied magnetic field. We attribute the general morphology of the FLL and its orientation to three dominant mechanisms. First, non-local contributions, second, the transition between open and closed Fermi surface sheets and, third, the intermediate mixed state between the Meissner and the Shubnikov phase.

The large slope of B_c2 approx ~ -6 Tesla/K near an improved T_c = 28.5 K of the in-plane B_c2(T) contrasts with a flattening starting at 23 K above 30 Tesla we regard as the onset of Pauli-limited behavior (PLB) with B_c2(0) about 65 Tesla. We interpret a similar hitherto unexplained flattening of the B_c2(T) curves reported for at least three other disordered closely related systems as also as a manifestation of PLB. Their Maki parameters have been estimated analyzing their B_c2(T) data within the WHH approach. The pronounced PLB of (Ba,K)Fe_2As_2 single crystals from a tin-flux is attributed also to a significant As deficiency. Consequences of our results are discussed in terms of disorder effects within conventional (CSC) and unconventional superconductivity (USC). USC scenarios with nodes on individual Fermi surface sheets (FSS), can be discarded for our samples. The increase of dB_c2/dT|_{T_c} by sizeable disorder provides evidence for an important intraband (intra-FSS) contribution to the orbital upper critical field. We suggest that it can be ascribed either to an impurity driven transition from s_{+-} USC to CSC of an extended s_{++}-wave state or to a stabilized s_{+-}-state provided As-vacancies cause predominantly strong intraband scattering in the unitary limit. We compare our results with B_c2 data from the literature with no PLB for fields below 60 to 70 Tesla probed so far. A novel disorder related scenario of a complex interplay of SC with two different competing magnetic instabilities is suggested.

We report 139La, 57Fe and 75As nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) measurements on powders of the new LaO1-xFxFeAs superconductor for x = 0 and x = 0.1 at temperatures up to 480 K, and compare our measured NQR spectra with local density approximation (LDA) calculations. For all three nuclei in the x = 0.1 material, it is found that the local Knight shift increases monotonically with an increase in temperature, and scales with the macroscopic susceptibility, suggesting a single magnetic degree of freedom. Surprisingly, the spin lattice relaxation rates for all nuclei also scale with one another, despite the fact that the form factors for each site sample different regions of q-space. This result suggests a lack of any q-space structure in the dynamical spin susceptibility that might be expected in the presence of antiferromagnetic correlations. Rather, our results are more compatible with simple quasi-particle scattering. Furthermore, we find that the increase in the electric field gradient at the As cannot be accounted for by LDA calculations, suggesting that structural changes, in particular the position of the As in the unit cell, dominate the NQR response.

We have prepared the newly discovered Fe-based superconducting material $\rm LaO_{1-x}F_xFeAs$ ($0\leq x\leq 0.2$) in polycrystalline form and have investigated the samples by means of structural, thermodynamic and transport measurements. Our investigations reveal a non superconducting phase at $0\leq x\lesssim0.04$ which for $x=0$ is characterized by a structural transition towards an orthorhombic distortion at $T_s\approx 160$ K and antiferromagnetic spin order at $T_N\approx138$ K. Both transitions lead to strong anomalies in various transport properties as well as in magnetization and in specific heat. Remarkably, the transition temperatures are only weakly doping dependent up $x\lesssim 0.04$. However, the transitions are abruptly suppressed at $x\geq0.05$ in favour of a superconducting phase with a critical temperature $T_c\gtrsim 20$ K. Upon further increasing the F-doping $T_c$ increases up to a maximum of $T_c=26.8$ K at $x=0.1$ which is followed by a decrease down to $T_c\approx10$ K at $x\geq0.15$.

We present the first comprehensive derivation of the intrinsic electronic phase diagram of the iron-oxypnictide superconductors in the normal state based on the analysis of the electrical resistivity $ρ$ of both LaFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_x$ and SmFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_x$ for a wide range of doping. Our data give clear-cut evidence for unusual normal state properties in these new materials. In particular, the emergence of superconductivity at low doping levels is accompanied by distinct anomalous transport behavior in $ρ$ of the normal state which is reminiscent of the spin density wave (SDW) signature in the parent material. At higher doping levels $ρ$ of LaFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_x$ shows a clear transition from this pseudogap-like behavior to Fermi liquid-like behavior, mimicking the phase diagram of the cuprates. Moreover, our data reveal a correlation between the strength of the anomalous features and the stability of the superconducting phase. The pseudogap-like features become stronger in SmFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_x$ where superconductivity is enhanced and vanish when superconductivity is reduced in the doping region with Fermi liquid-like behavior.

We present first-time measurements of the Fermi surface and low-energy electronic structure of intermetallic compounds Gd2PdSi3 and Tb2PdSi3 by means of angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES). Both materials possess a flower-like Fermi surface consisting of an electron barrel at the G point surrounded by spindle-shaped electron pockets originating from the same band. The band bottom of both features lies at 0.5 eV below the Fermi level. From the experimentally measured band structure, we estimate the momentum-dependent RKKY coupling strength and demonstrate that it is peaked at the 1/2 GK wave vector. Comparison with neutron diffraction data from the same crystals shows perfect agreement of this vector with the propagation vector of the low-temperature in-plane magnetic order, thereby demonstrating the decisive role of the Fermi surface geometry in explaining the complex magnetically ordered ground state of ternary rare earth silicides.
