Model-independent extraction of form factors and $|V_{cb}|$ in $\overline{B} \rightarrow D \ell^- \overlineνにゅー_\ell$ with hadronic tagging at BaBar

Abstract: Using the entire BaBar $Υうぷしろん(4S)$ data set, the first two-dimensional unbinned angular analysis of the semileptonic decay $\overline{B} \rightarrow D \ell^- \overlineνにゅー_\ell$ is performed, employing hadronic reconstruction of the tag-side $B$ meson from $Υうぷしろん(4S)\to B\overline{B}$. Here, $\ell$ denotes the light charged leptons $e$ and $μみゅー$. A novel data-driven signal-background separation procedure with minimal dependence on simulation is developed. This procedure preserves all multi-dimensional correlations present in the data. The expected $\sin^2θしーた_\ell$ dependence of the differential decay rate in the Standard Model is demonstrated, where $θしーた_\ell$ is the lepton helicity angle. Including input from the latest lattice QCD calculations and previously available experimental data, the underlying form factors are extracted using both model-independent (BGL) and dependent (CLN) methods. Comparisons with lattice calculations show flavor SU(3) symmetry to be a good approximation in the $B_{(s)}\to D_{(s)}$ sector. Using the BGL results, the CKM matrix element $|V_{cb}|=(41.09\pm 1.16)\times 10^{-3}$ and the Standard Model prediction of the lepton-flavor universality violation variable $\mathcal{R}(D)=0.300\pm 0.004$, are extracted. The value of $|V_{cb}|$ from $\overline{B} \rightarrow D \ell^- \overlineνにゅー_\ell$ tends to be higher than that extracted using $\overline{B} \rightarrow D \ell^- \overlineνにゅー_\ell$. The Standard Model $\mathcal{R}(D)$ calculation is at a $1.97σしぐま$ tension with the latest HFLAV experimental average. △ Less

Graph-based Recommendation for Sparse and Heterogeneous User Interactions

Abstract: Recommender system research has oftentimes focused on approaches that operate on large-scale datasets containing millions of user interactions. However, many small businesses struggle to apply state-of-the-art models due to their very limited availability of data. We propose a graph-based recommender model which utilizes heterogeneous interactions between users and content of different types and i… ▽ More Recommender system research has oftentimes focused on approaches that operate on large-scale datasets containing millions of user interactions. However, many small businesses struggle to apply state-of-the-art models due to their very limited availability of data. We propose a graph-based recommender model which utilizes heterogeneous interactions between users and content of different types and is able to operate well on small-scale datasets. A genetic algorithm is used to find optimal weights that represent the strength of the relationship between users and content. Experiments on two real-world datasets (which we make available to the research community) show promising results (up to 7% improvement), in comparison with other state-of-the-art methods for low-data environments. These improvements are statistically significant and consistent across different data samples. △ Less

FullBrain: a Social E-learning Platform

Abstract: We present FullBrain, a social e-learning platform where students share and track their knowledge. FullBrain users can post notes, ask questions and share learning resources in dedicated course and concept spaces. We detail two components of FullBrain: a SIR system equipped with query autocomplete and query autosuggestion, and a Leaderboard module to improve user experience. We analyzed the day-to-day users' usage of the SIR system, measuring a time-to-complete a request below 0.11s, matching or exceeding our UX targets. Moreover, we performed stress tests which lead the way for more detailed analysis. The absolute determination of branching fractions for these decays are significantly improved compared to previous BaBaR measurements. Signal $B^- \to Λらむだ{\overline p} νにゅー{\overlineνにゅー}$ candidates are identified by first fully reconstructing a $B^+$ decay in one of many possible exclusive decays to hadronic final states, then examining detector activity that is not associated with this reconstructed $B^+$ decay for evidence of a signal $B^- \to Λらむだ{\overline p} νにゅー{\overlineνにゅー}$ decay. The data yield is found to be consistent with the expected background contribution under a null signal hypothesis, resulting in an upper limit of ${{\cal B} (B^- \to Λらむだ{\overline p} νにゅー{\overlineνにゅー}) < 3.0\times 10^{-5}}$ at the $90\%$ confidence level. △ Less

The analysis is performed with a combination of the final data sets of the \babar\ and Belle experiments containing $471 \times 10^{6}$ and $772 \times 10^{6}$ $B\bar{B}$ pairs collected at the $Υうぷしろん\left(4S\right)$ resonance at the asymmetric-energy B factories PEP-II at SLAC and KEKB at KEK, respectively. We measure $\sin{2βべーた} = 0.80 \pm 0.14 \,(\rm{stat.}) \pm 0.06 \,(\rm{syst.}) \pm 0.03 \,(\rm{model})$ and $\cos{2βべーた} = 0.91 \pm 0.22 \,(\rm{stat.}) \pm 0.09 \,(\rm{syst.}) \pm 0.07 \,(\rm{model})$. The result for the direct measurement of the angle is $βべーた= \left( 22.5 \pm 4.4 \,(\rm{stat.}) \pm 1.2 \,(\rm{syst.}) \pm 0.6 \,(\rm{model}) \right)^{\circ}$. The last quoted uncertainties are due to the composition of the $D^{0} \to K_{S}^{0} πぱい^{+} πぱい^{-}$ decay amplitude model, which is newly established by a Dalitz plot amplitude analysis of a high-statistics $e^{+}e^{-} \to c\bar{c}$ data sample as part of this analysis. We find the first evidence for $\cos2βべーた>0$ at the level of $3.7$ standard deviations. The measurement excludes the trigonometric multifold solution $πぱい/2 - βべーた= (68.1 \pm 0.7)^{\circ}$ at the level of $7.3$ standard deviations and therefore resolves an ambiguity in the determination of the apex of the CKM Unitarity Triangle. The hypothesis of $βべーた= 0^{\circ}$ is ruled out at the level of $5.1$ standard deviations, and thus CP violation is observed in $B^{0} \to D^{(*)} h^{0}$ decays. △ Less

The measurement is performed c… ▽ More We present first evidence that the cosine of the CP-violating weak phase $2βべーた$ is positive, and hence exclude trigonometric multifold solutions of the CKM Unitarity Triangle using a time-dependent Dalitz plot analysis of $B^{0} \to D^{(*)} h^{0}$ with $D \to K_{S}^{0} πぱい^{+} πぱい^{-}$ decays, where $h^{0} \in \{πぱい^{0}, ηいーた, ωおめが\}$ denotes a light unflavored and neutral hadron. The measurement is performed combining the final data sets of the BaBar and Belle experiments collected at the $Υうぷしろん(4S)$ resonance at the asymmetric-energy B factories PEP-II at SLAC and KEKB at KEK, respectively. The data samples contain $( 471 \pm 3 )\times 10^6\, B\bar{B}$ pairs recorded by the BaBar detector and $( 772 \pm 11 )\times 10^6\, B\bar{B}$ pairs recorded by the Belle detector. The results of the measurement are $\sin{2βべーた} = 0.80 \pm 0.14 \,(\rm{stat.}) \pm 0.06 \,(\rm{syst.}) \pm 0.03 \,(\rm{model})$ and $\cos{2βべーた} = 0.91 \pm 0.22 \,(\rm{stat.}) \pm 0.09 \,(\rm{syst.}) \pm 0.07 \,(\rm{model})$. The result for the direct measurement of the angle $βべーた$ of the CKM Unitarity Triangle is $βべーた= \left( 22.5 \pm 4.4 \,(\rm{stat.}) \pm 1.2 \,(\rm{syst.}) \pm 0.6 \,(\rm{model}) \right)^{\circ}$. The quoted model uncertainties are due to the composition of the $D^{0} \to K_{S}^{0} πぱい^{+} πぱい^{-}$ decay amplitude model, which is newly established by performing a Dalitz plot amplitude analysis using a high-statistics $e^{+}e^{-} \to c\bar{c}$ data sample. CP violation is observed in $B^{0} \to D^{(*)} h^{0}$ decays at the level of $5.1$ standard deviations. The significance for $\cos{2βべーた}>0$ is $3.7$ standard deviations. The trigonometric multifold solution $πぱい/2 - βべーた= (68.1 \pm 0.7)^{\circ}$ is excluded at the level of $7.3$ standard deviations. The measurement resolves an ambiguity in the determination of the apex of the CKM Unitarity Triangle. △ Less

The new CMS pixel detector provides four-hit tracking with a reduced material budget as well as new cooling and powering schemes. In this paper, comprehensive test beam studies are presented, which have been conducted to verify the design and to quantify the performance of the new detector assemblies in terms of tracking efficiency and spatial resolution. Under optimal conditions, the tracking efficiency is $99.95\pm0.05\,\%$, while the intrinsic spatial resolutions are $4.80\pm0.25\,μみゅー\mathrm{m}$ and $7.99\pm0.21\,μみゅー\mathrm{m}$ along the $100\,μみゅー\mathrm{m}$ and $150\,μみゅー\mathrm{m}$ pixel pitch, respectively. The effective trapping rates are extracted by comparing the results to simulation. The electric field is simulated using Synopsys device simulation assuming two effective defects. The generation and drift of charge carriers are simulated in an independent simulation based on PixelAV. The effective trapping rates are determined from the measured charge collection efficiencies and the simulated and measured time-resolved current pulses are compared. The effective trapping rates determined for both electrons and holes are about 50% smaller than those obtained using standard extrapolations of studies at low fluences and suggests an improved tracker performance over initial expectations. △ Less

For decays without $Σしぐま_{c}(2455)$ or $Σしぐま_{c}(2520)$ resonances, we measure ${\cal B}[\bar{B}^{0}\rightarrowΛらむだ_{c}^{+}\bar{p}πぱい^{+}πぱい^{-}]_{\mathrm{non-Σしぐま_{c}}}=(79 \pm 4 \pm 4 \pm 20)\times10^{-5}$. The total branching fraction is determined to be ${\cal B}[\bar{B}^{0}\rightarrowΛらむだ_{c}^{+}\bar{p}πぱい^{+}πぱい^{-}]_{\mathrm{total}}=(123 \pm 5 \pm 7 \pm 32)\times10^{-5}$. We examine multibody mass combinations in the resonant three-particle $Σしぐま_{c}\bar{p}πぱい$ final states and in the four-particle $Λらむだ_{c}^{+}\bar{p}πぱい^{+}πぱい^{-}$ final state, and observe different characteristics for the $\bar{p}πぱい$ combination in neutral versus doubly-charged $Σしぐま_{c}$ decays. △ Less

From these distributions, we extract the form-factor shapes f_+(q^2) and the total branching fractions BF(B^0 --> pi^- l^+ nu) = (1.45 +/- 0.04_{stat} +/- 0.06_{syst})x10^-4 (combined pi^- and pi^0 decay channels assuming isospin symmetry), BF(B^+ --> omega l^+ nu) = (1.19 +/- 0.16_{stat} +/- 0.09_{syst})x10^-4 and BF(B^+ --> eta l^+ nu) = (0.38 +/- 0.05_{stat} +/- 0.05_{syst})x10^-4. We also measure BF(B^+ --> eta^' l^+ nu) = (0.24 +/- 0.08_{stat} +/- 0.03_{syst})x10^-4. We obtain values for the magnitude of the CKM matrix element V_{ub} by direct comparison with three different QCD calculations in restricted q^2 ranges of B --> pi l^+ nu decays. From a simultaneous fit to the experimental data over the full q^2 range and the FNAL/MILC lattice QCD predictions, we obtain |V_{ub}| = (3.25 +/- 0.31)x10^-3, where the error is the combined experimental and theoretical uncertainty. △ Less

The decays of entangled neutral B mesons into definite flavor states ($B^0$ or $\bar{B}^0$), and $J/ψぷさいK_S^0$ or $c\bar{c} K_S^0$ final states (referred to as $B_+$ or $B_-$), allow comparisons between the probabilities of four pairs of T-conjugated transitions, for example, $\bar{B}^0 \rightarrow B_-$ and $B_- \rightarrow \bar{B}^0$, as a function of the time difference between the two B decays. Using 468 million $B\bar{B}$ pairs produced in $Υうぷしろん(4S)$ decays collected by the BABAR detector at SLAC, we measure T-violating parameters in the time evolution of neutral B mesons, yielding $ΔでるたS_T^+ = -1.37 \pm 0.14 (stat.) \pm 0.06 (syst.)$ and $ΔでるたS_T^- = 1.17 \pm 0.18 (stat.) \pm 0.11 (syst.)$. Abstract: We search for hadronic decays of a light Higgs boson (A0) produced in radiative decays of an Upsilon(2S) or Upsilon(3S) meson, Upsilon --> gamma A0. Abstract: We report the observation of the baryonic B decay B0bar --> Lambda_c^+ anti-Lambda K- with a significance larger than 7 standard deviations based on 471x10^6$ BBbar pairs collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II storage ring at SLAC. We measure the branching fraction for the decay B0bar --> Lambda_c^+ anti-Lambda K- to be (3.8 \pm 0.8_{stat} \pm 0.2_{sys} \pm 1.0_{Lambda_c^+})x10^{-5}. Cancellation of probe effects in measurements of spin polarized momentum density by electron positron annihilation

Band structure of LaB6 by an algorithm for filtering reconstructed electron-positron momentum densities

The algorithm is tested with simulated spectra and employed to study the electronic structure of the rare-earth compound LaB6. Three-dimensional reconstruction of the Fermi surface of LaB6

Abstract: The 2-dimensional angular correlations of the positron annihilation radiation (2D-ACAR) on a single crystal of LaB6 was measured for three projections. The 2D-ACAR spectra were subjected to the Van Citter-Gerhard deconvolution alghorithm. The 2D-ACAR spectra were subjected to the Van Citter-Gerhard deconvolution alghorithm. From the experimental spectra we produced the 3D k-space density rho(k) via three different methods: i) we reconstructed the 3D electron-positron momentum density rho(p) via the Cormack method. rho(k) was then obtained by applying the 3D LCW transformation to rho(p). ii) The same steps of point i) were repeated adopting a modified Fourier-transform-based algorithm. iii) The 3d k-space occupancy rho(k) was obtained directly by parameterising the Fermi surface volume with prolate ellipsoids whose axes were determined by a least-square fit to the 2D LCW transformations applied to two high symmetry projections. The ellipsoids diameters along high symmetry directions of the cubic Brillouin zone (BZ), as a fraction of the BZ size, were 0.64 (dir. X-M) and 0.82 (dir. Gamma-X). The resulting Fermi volume, as a fraction of the BZ volume, was 0.55. These results agree within 1% with those obtained via the de Haas van Alphen experiments. △ Less

Fermi surface nesting and magnetic structure of ErGa3

Abstract: A three dimensional mapping of the Fermi Surface (FS) of the rare-earth compound ErGa3 was determined via measurements of the angular correlation of the electron-positron annihilation radiation. The topology of the electronlike FS does show nesting properties which are consistent with the modulated antiferromagnetic structure of the system.
