We prove the existence of a nodal ground state solution to the problem above, based on variational methods and minimization of the associated energy functional $\mathcal{E}\colon W^{1,\mathcal{H}}(Ω) \to\mathbb{R}$ over the constraint set \[\mathcal{C}=\Big\{u \in W^{1,\mathcal{H}}(Ω)\colon u^{\pm}\neq 0,\, \left\langle \mathcal{E}'(u),u^+ \right\rangle= \left\langle \mathcal{E}'(u),-u^- \right\rangle=0 \Big\},\] whereby $\mathcal{C}$ differs from the well-known nodal Nehari manifold due to the nonlocal character of the problem.

where $ν(x)$ is the outer unit normal of $Ω$ at $x \in \partialΩ$, $Δ_{p_i}$ denotes the $p_i$-Laplacian and $g_i\colon \partialΩ\times\mathbb{R}\times\mathbb{R}\to\mathbb{R}$ are Carathéodory functions that satisfy general growth and structure conditions for $i=1,2$. In the first part we prove the existence of a positive minimal and a negative maximal solution based on an appropriate construction of sub- and supersolution along with a certain behavior of $g_i$ near zero related to the first eigenvalue of the $p_i$-Laplacian with Steklov boundary condition. The second part is related to the existence of a third nontrivial solution by imposing a variational structure, that is, $(g_1,g_2)=\nabla g$ with a smooth function $(s_1,s_2)\mapsto g(x,s_1,s_2)$. By using the variational characterization of the second eigenvalue of the Steklov eigenvalue problem for the $p_i$-Laplacian together with the properties of the related truncated energy functionals, which are in general nonsmooth, we show the existence of a nontrivial solution whose components lie between the components of the positive minimal and the negative maximal solution.

On a closed Riemannian surface $(M,\bar g)$ with negative Euler characteristic, we study the problem of finding conformal metrics with prescribed volume $A>0$ and the property that their Gauss curvatures $f_λ= f + λ$ are given as the sum of a prescribed function $f \in C^\infty(M)$ and an additive constant $λ$. Our main tool in this study is a new variant of the prescribed Gauss curvature flow, for which we establish local well-posedness and global compactness results. In contrast to previous work, our approach does not require any sign conditions on $f$. Moreover, we exhibit conditions under which the function $f_λ$ is sign changing and the standard prescribed Gauss curvature flow is not applicable.

We model the Lights Out game on general simple graphs in the framework of linear algebra over the field $\mathbb F_2$. Based upon a version of the Fredholm alternative, we introduce a separating invariant of the game, i.e., an initial state can be transformed into a final state if and only if the invariant of both states agrees. We also investigate certain states with particularly interesting properties. Apart from the classical version of the game, we propose several variants, in particular a version with more than only two states (light on, light off), where the analysis resides on systems of linear equations over the ring $\mathbb Z_n$. Although it is easy to find a concrete solution of the Lights Out problem, we show that it is NP-hard to find a minimal solution. We also propose electric circuit diagrams to actually realize the Lights Out game.

We show uniqueness of classical solutions of the normalised two-dimensional Hamilton-Ricci flow on closed, smooth manifolds for smooth data among solutions satisfying (essentially) only a uniform bound for the Liouville energy and a natural space-time $L^2$-bound for the time derivative of the solution. The result is surprising when compared with results for the harmonic map heat flow, where non-uniqueness through reverse bubbling may occur.
