We report a simple, efficient manner to assess magnetic interactions, more specifically the exchange interaction, in systems as blocked magnetic nanoparticles. Specifically, we investigate what is the theoretical limit for the external magnetic susceptibility in a system described by the plain old Stoner-Wohlfarth model. We go beyond and introduce a general mean field theory for interacting systems, thus estimating how the magnetic susceptibility is affected due to the dipolar and exchange interactions inside the system. We disclose a fundamental inequality for the magnetic susceptibility and show its violation is an unambiguous signature of the existence of exchange interactions between nanoparticles in a collective system. To test the robustness of our theoretical achievements, we examine magnetization measurements and Henkel plots for blocked magnetic nanopowders. The agreement between experiment and theory provides evidence to confirm the validity of our findings.

We investigate the magnetic nanoparticles (fluid) hyperthermia in non-adiabatic conditions through the calorimetric method. Specifically, we propose a theoretical approach to magnetic hyperthermia from a thermodynamic point of view. To test the robustness of the approach, we perform hyperthermia experiments and analyze the thermal behavior of magnetite and magnesium ferrite magnetic nanoparticles dispersed in water submitted to an alternating magnetic field. From our findings, besides estimating the specific loss power value from a non-adiabatic process, thus enhancing the accuracy in the determination of this quantity, we provide physical meaning to parameters found in literature that still remained not fully understood, and bring to light how they can be obtained experimentally.

Chalcogenides materials are being considered as some of the most promising systems for energy harvesting and energy conversion. Among them, the orthorhombic family of compounds X2Y3 (with X= Bi, Sb and Y= S, Se) has attracted special attention due to its interesting atomic structure, thermoelectric and optical properties. While Bi2S3 and Sb2Se3 have being already applied to solar cells, the new metastable Bi2Se3 is still a challenge due to the lack of data and knowledge on its properties. Here, the vibrational and structural properties of the orthorhombic metastable phase of Bi2Se3 were investigated by using Raman spectroscopy and ab-initio calculations. We perform Raman spectrum measurements along in-situ thermal treatment on samples grown by electrochemical deposition. We show that by increasing the temperature occurs an improved crystallization in the orthorhombic structure, followed by a recrystallization to the usual rhombohedral phase. Our results point out for specific Raman modes of the orthorhombic phase. First principle computational results based on density functional theory support the experimental data and describe three singlet Raman active vibrational modes, Ag1, B2g and Ag2.

Cuprous oxide (Cu2O) films from 25 nm to 1500 nm were electrodeposited on n-Si(100) and Ni/n-Si(100) substrates from aqueous solution at room temperature. X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy imaging show that the Cu2O structure and morphology is strongly affected by the substrate choice, with V shape and U shape columnar growth on n-Si(100) and Ni/n-Si(100), respectively. Atomic force microscopy reveals the presence of rounded grains at the surface in both cases. Anomalous and normal roughening are observed in films grown on n-Si and Ni, respectively, but estimates of scaling exponents are not conclusive. On the other hand, the distributions of local heights, roughness, and extremal heights show good agreement with those of the fourth order linear stochastic equation of Mullins and Herring (MH). Thus, surface dynamics in both systems is dominated by diffusion of adsorbed molecules, with no large scale effect of possible inhomogeneities in mass flux from the solution or in reaction and adsorption rates. In growth on n-Si substrates, the noise amplitude of the MH equation increases in time as t^{0.8}, while the coefficient of the curvature-related term is time-independent. Step edge energy barriers restrict the mass flux across grain boundaries, thus a broad size distribution of initial grains leads to coarsening of the larger ones. This explains their V shape in the thickest films and establishes a connection with the anomalous roughening. These effects are reduced in films grown on Ni/n-Si, which initially have much larger grains with narrower size distributions and, consequently, smaller fluctuations in coarse grained growth rates.
