The family of cubic noncentrosymmetric 3-4-3 compounds has become a fertile ground for the discovery of novel correlated metallic and insulating phases. Here, we report the synthesis of a new heavy fermion compound, Ce$_3$Bi$_4$Ni$_3$. It is an isoelectronic analog of the prototypical Kondo insulator Ce$_3$Bi$_4$Pt$_3$ and of the recently discovered Weyl-Kondo semimetal Ce$_3$Bi$_4$Pd$_3$. In contrast to the volume-preserving Pt-Pd substitution, structural and chemical analyses reveal a positive chemical pressure effect in Ce$_3$Bi$_4$Ni$_3$ relative to its heavier counterparts. Based on the results of electrical resistivity, Hall effect, magnetic susceptibility, and specific heat measurements, we identify an energy gap of 65-70 meV, about eight times larger than that in Ce$_3$Bi$_4$Pt$_3$ and about 45 times larger than that of the Kondo-insulating background hosting the Weyl nodes in Ce$_3$Bi$_4$Pd$_3$. We show that this gap as well as other physical properties do not evolve monotonically with increasing atomic number, i.e., in the sequence Ce$_3$Bi$_4$Ni$_3$-Ce$_3$Bi$_4$Pd$_3$-Ce$_3$Bi$_4$Pt$_3$, but instead with increasing partial electronic density of states of the $d$ orbitals at the Fermi energy. To understand under which condition topological states form in these materials is a topic for future studies.

The Fermi surface is found to consist of four surfaces: a roughly spherical pocket $β$, with $F_β\simeq 0.3$ kT; a pillow-shaped closed surface, $α$, with $F_α\simeq 1.1$ kT; and two higher frequencies $γ_1$ with $F_{γ_1} \simeq 3.2$ kT and $γ_2$ with $F_{γ_2} \simeq 3.5$ kT that are seen only near the \textit{c}-axis, and that may arise on cylindrical Fermi surfaces. The measured cyclotron masses range from 1.9 $m_e$ to 4.3 $m_e$. A simple LDA+SO calculation performed for the paramagnetic ground state shows a very different Fermi surface topology, demonstrating a need for more advanced electronic structure calculations.

The coexistence of long-range magnetic order and superconductivity is discussed in the context of the existence of the two crystallographically inequivalent Ce-sites in the unit cell of Ce$_3$PtIn$_{11}$. The behavior of U$_{2}$RhIn$_{8}$ strongly resembles that of the related URhIn$_{5}$ and UIn$_{3}$ with respect to magnetization, specific heat and resistivity except for magnetocrystalline anisotropy developing with lowering dimensionality in the series UIn$_{3}$ vs. U$_{2}$RhIn$_{8}$ and URhIn$_{5}$. U$_{2}$RhIn$_{8}$ orders antiferromagnetically below T$_{\textrm{N}}$ $= 117$ K and exhibits a slightly enhanced Sommerfeld coefficient $γ= 47$ mJ$\cdot$mol$^{-1}\cdot$K$^{-2}$. Magnetic field leaves the value of Néel temperature for both URhIn$_{5}$ and U$_{2}$RhIn$_{8}$ unaffected up to 9 T. On the other hand, T$_{\textrm{N}}$ is increasing with applying hydrostatic pressure up to 3.2 GPa. The weak temperature dependence of $χ(T)$ in all studied compounds might be attributed to the mainly itinerant nature of 5f electrons. The character of uranium 5f electron states of U$_{2}$RhIn$_{8}$ was studied by first principles calculations based on the density functional theory. The overall phase diagram of U$_{2}$RhIn$_{8}$ is discussed in the context of magnetism in the related URhX$_{5}$ and UX$_{3}$ (X = In, Ga) compounds.

How ground states of quantum matter transform between one another reveals deep insights into the mechanisms stabilizing them. Correspondingly, quantum phase transitions are explored in numerous materials classes, with heavy fermion compounds being among the most prominent ones. Recent studies in an anisotropic heavy fermion compound have shown that different types of transitions are induced by variations of chemical or external pressure [1-3], raising the question of the extent to which heavy fermion quantum criticality is universal. To make progress, it is essential to broaden both the materials basis and the microscopic parameter variety. Here, we identify a cubic heavy fermion material as exhibiting a field-induced quantum phase transition, and show how the material can be used to explore one extreme of the dimensionality axis. The transition between two different ordered phases is accompanied by an abrupt change of Fermi surface, reminiscent of what happens across the field-induced antiferromagnetic to paramagnetic transition in the anisotropic YbRh2Si2. This finding leads to a materials-based global phase diagram -- a precondition for a unified theoretical description.

We report a detailed study of the polymorphic transitions in ternary stannide CeRuSn on high quality single crystals through a combination of X-ray diffraction experiments conducted at 300, 275 and 120 K, and measurements of the thermal expansion, magnetization, and resistivity, along main crystallographic axes. In addition, the transition was followed as a function of pressure up to 0.8 GPa. The present X-ray diffraction data show that the room temperature polymorph consists of the lattice doubled along the c axis with respect to the CeCoAl-type structure consistent with previous reports. Upon cooling, the compound undergoes two successive transitions, first to a quintuple (290 K) and than to a triple CeCoAl superstructure at 225 K. The transitions are accompanied by a tremendous volume change due to a strong shrinking of the lattice along the c axis, which is clearly observed in thermal expansion. We advance arguments that the volume collapse originates from an increasing number of crystallographically inequivalent Ce sites and the change of ratio between the short and long Ce-Ru bonds. The observed properties of the polymorphic transition in CeRuSn are reminiscent of the transition in elementary Cerium, suggesting that similar physics, i.e., a Kondo influenced transition and strong lattice vibrations might be the driving forces.

However, recent experiments on Yb-based heavy fermion compounds suggest the presence of non-Fermi liquid behavior over a finite zero-temperature region. Using detailed susceptibility and transport measurements we show that the classic quantum critical system, Ge-substituted YbRh2Si2, also displays such behavior. We advance arguments that this is not due to a disorder-smeared quantum critical point, but represents a new class of metallic phase.

This system represents the first example for a {\it cubic} heavy fermion (HF) in which $T_{\rm N}$ can be suppressed {\it continuously} down to T=0. A characteristic sign change of the Grüneisen parameter between the AF and paramagnetic state indicates the accumulation of entropy close to the QCP. The observed quantum critical behavior is compatible with the predictions of the itinerant theory for three-dimensional critical spinfluctuations. This has important implications for the role of the dimensionality in HF QCPs.

The point at absolute zero where matter becomes unstable to new forms of order is called a quantum critical point (QCP). The quantum fluctuations between order and disorder that develop at this point induce profound transformations in the finite temperature electronic properties of the material. Magnetic fields are ideal for tuning a material as close as possible to a QCP, where the most intense effects of criticality can be studied. A previous study on theheavy-electron material $YbRh_2Si_2$ found that near a field-induced quantum critical point electrons move ever more slowly and scatter off one-another with ever increasing probability, as indicated by a divergence to infinity of the electron effective mass and cross-section. These studies could not shed light on whether these properties were an artifact of the applied field, or a more general feature of field-free QCPs. Here we report that when Germanium-doped $YbRh_2Si_2$ is tuned away from a chemically induced quantum critical point by magnetic fields there is a universal behavior in the temperature dependence of the specific heat and resistivity: the characteristic kinetic energy of electrons is directly proportional to the strength of the applied field. We infer that all ballistic motion of electrons vanishes at a QCP, forming a new class of conductor in which individual electrons decay into collective current carrying motions of the electron fluid.

We discuss a series of thermodynamic, magnetic and electrical transport experiments on the two heavy fermion compounds CeNi2Ge2 and YbRh2Si2 in which magnetic fields, B, are used to tune the systems from a Non-Fermi liquid (NFL) into a field-induced FL state. Upon approaching the quantum-critical points from the FL side by reducing B we analyze the heavy quasiparticle (QP) mass and QP-QP scattering cross sections. For CeNi2Ge2 the observed behavior agrees well with the predictions of the spin-density wave (SDW) scenario for three-dimensional (3D) critical spin-fluctuations. By contrast, the observed singularity in YbRh2Si2 cannot be explained by the itinerant SDW theory for neither 3D nor 2D critical spinfluctuations. Furthermore, we investigate the magnetization M(B) at high magnetic fields. For CeNi2Ge2 a metamagnetic transition is observed at 43 T, whereas for YbRh2Si2 a kink-like anomaly occurs at 10 T in M vs B (applied along the easy basal plane) above which the heavy fermion state is completely suppressed.

We report low temperature specific heat, C, magnetization, M, susceptibility, chi, and electrical resistivity, rho, measurements on high-quality single crystals of the heavy-fermion system YbRh_2(Si_{1-x} Ge_x)_2 (x=0 and 0.05). The undoped compound shows weak antiferromagnetic (AF) order at T_N=70 mK which is suppressed to below 10 mK by a tiny volume expansion in the x=0.05 system. In the latter pronounced deviations from Landau Fermi liquid (LFL) behavior occur, e.g. Delta rho ~ T over three decades in T. Both thermodynamic and magnetic properties show a crossover at about 0.3 K: At 0.3 K <= T <= 10 K we observe C/T ~ log(T_0/T) and a "non-Curie" behavior chi^{-1} ~ T^alpha with alpha<1 similar to what was found for the prototypical system CeCu_{5.9} Au_{0.1}. Below 0.3 K, chi turns into a Curie-Weiss dependence chi^{-1} ~ (T-Theta) indicating large unscreened Yb^{3+} moments whereas in C(T)/T a pronounced upturn occurs. In the undoped compound the AF order is suppressed continuously by critical fields B_{c0} ~= 0.06 T and 0.7 T applied perpendicular and parallel to the c-axis, respectively. For B>B_{c0} a LFL state with Delta rho = A(B)T^2 and C(T)/T = gamma_0(B) is induced, that fulfills the Kadowaki-Woods scaling A ~ gamma_0^2. Upon reducing the magnetic field to B_{c0} a 1/(B-B_{c0}) dependence of A(B) and gamma_0^2(B) indicates singular scattering at the whole Fermi surface and a divergence of the heavy quasiparticle mass.

Abstract:
We report low-temperature calorimetric, magnetic and resistivity measurements on the antiferromagnetic (AF) heavy-fermion metal YbRh$_2$Si$_2$ (${T_N =}$ 70 mK) as a function of magnetic field $B$. While for fields exceeding the critical value ${B_{c0}}$ at which ${T_N\to0}$ the low temperature resistivity shows an ${AT^2}$ dependence, a ${1/(B-B_{c0})}$ divergence of ${A(B)}$ upon reducing $B$…

We report low-temperature calorimetric, magnetic and resistivity measurements on the antiferromagnetic (AF) heavy-fermion metal YbRh$_2$Si$_2$ (${T_N =}$ 70 mK) as a function of magnetic field $B$. While for fields exceeding the critical value ${B_{c0}}$ at which ${T_N\to0}$ the low temperature resistivity shows an ${AT^2}$ dependence, a ${1/(B-B_{c0})}$ divergence of ${A(B)}$ upon reducing $B$ to ${B_{c0}}$ suggests singular scattering at the whole Fermi surface and a divergence of the heavy quasiparticle mass. The observations are interpreted in terms of a new type of quantum critical point separating a weakly AF ordered from a weakly polarized heavy Landau-Fermi liquid state.
