We consider nonreciprocal supercurrent effects in Josephson junctions based on multiband superconductors with a pairing structure that can break time-reversal symmetry. We demonstrate that a nonreciprocal supercurrent can be generally achieved by the cooperation of interband superconducting phase mismatch and interband scattering as well as by multiband phase frustration. The effect of interband impurity scattering indicates that the amplitude and sign of the nonreciprocal supercurrent are sensitive to the interband phase relation. For the case of a three-band superconductor, due to phase frustration, we show that the profile of the supercurrent rectification is marked by a hexagonal pattern of nodal lines with vanishing amplitude. Remarkably, around the nodal lines, the supercurrent rectification amplitude exhibits three-fold structures with an alternating sign. We show that the hexagonal pattern and the three-fold structure in the interband phase space turn out to be dependent on the tunneling amplitude of each band. These findings provide hallmarks of the supercurrent rectification which can be potentially employed to unveil the occurrence of spin-singlet multiband superconductivity with time-reversal symmetry breaking.

Despite decades of intensive experimental and theoretical efforts, the physics of cuprate high-temperature superconductors in general, and, in particular, their normal state, is still under debate. Here, we report our investigation of low-energy charge excitations in the normal state. We find that the peculiarities of the electronic band structure at low energies have a profound impact on the nature of the intraband collective modes. It gives rise to a new kind of mode with huge intensity and non-Lorentzian spectral function in addition to well-known collective excitations like conventional plasmons and spin fluctuation. We predict two such modes with maximal spectral weight in the nodal and antinodal directions. Additionally, we found a long-living quasi-one-dimensional plasmon becoming an intense soft mode over an extended momentum range along the antinodal direction. These modes might explain some of the resonant inelastic X-ray scattering spectroscopy data.

It is well-established that multicomponent superconductors can host different nonstandard phenomena such as broken-time reversal symmetry (BTRS) states, exotic Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) phases, the fractional Josephson effect as well as plenty of topological defects like phase solitons, domain walls and unusual vortex structures. We show that in the case of a two-component superconducting quasi-one-dimensional channel this catalogue can be extended by a novel inhomogeneous current state, which we have termed as a multiple-momenta state or, in short, a multiple-q state, characterized by the coexistence of two different interpenetrating Cooper pair condensates with different total momenta. Within the Ginzburg-Landau formalism for a dirty two-band superconductor with sizable impurity scattering treated in the Born-approximation we reveal that under certain conditions, the occurrence of multiple-q states can induce a cascade of transitions involving switching between them and the homogeneous BTRS (non-BTRS) states and vice versa leading this way to a complex interplay of homogeneous and inhomogeneous current states. We find that hallmarks of such a multiple-q state within a thin wire or channel can be a saw-like dependence of the depairing current and the existence of two distinct stable branches on it (a bistable current state).

Multi-component spin-singlet superconductors with competing 0- and $π$-pairing couplings, as in $s_{++}$ and $s_{\pm}$ phases, are close to instabilities with a spontaneous breaking of time-reversal symmetry. We demonstrate that the modification of the kinetic energy of superconducting electrons in a doubly connected superconducting cylinder, determined by the applied flux, generally drives transitions from chiral superconducting states to configurations that are time-reversal symmetric. This magneto-topological-induced changeover is investigated by means of a Ginzburg-Landau approach for a two-band superconductor with interband interactions and impurity scattering investigated for the case of a sample in the form of a mesoscopically thin-walled cylinder. We find that the application of a magnetic flux can convert a chiral $s_{\pm}+is_{++}$ state into a $s_{\pm}$ configuration and vice versa or tune the energy splitting of chiral states having inequivalent pairing amplitudes. We discuss signatures for the detection of these phases and of the corresponding transitions in mesoscopic superconducting loops.

Analysis of the Gibbs free energy of the system shows that solitonic states in a three-component superconductor are thermodynamically metastable and separated from the ground state by a sizable energy. Our results demonstrate that despite of the presence of the zoo of phase solitons states earlier proposed method [Phys. Rev. On the basis of density-matrix renormalization group based calculations the ground-state phase diagram is obtained as functions of $γ$ and $J_2/|J_1|$. It contains four kinds of frustration-induced ordered phases except a trivial FM phase. Two of the ordered phases are valence bond solid (VBS) with spin-singlet dimerization, which is a rather conventional order by disorder. Still, it is interesting to note that the VBS states possess an Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki-type topological hidden order. The remaining two phases are ferrimagnetic orders, each of which is distinguished by commensurate or incommensurate spin-spin correlation. It is striking that the ferrimagnetic orders are not associated with geometrical symmetry breaking; instead, the global spin-rotation symmetry is broken. In other words, the system lowers its energy via the FM inter-leg interaction by polarizing both of the AFM Heisenberg legs. This is a rare type of order by disorder. Besides, the incommensurate ferrimagnetic state appears as a consequence of the competition between a polarization and a critical Tomonaga-Luttinger-liquid behavior in the AFM Heisenberg legs.

We report inelastic neutron scattering experiments in Ca2Y2Cu5O10 and map out the full one magnon dispersion which extends up to a record value of 53 meV for frustrated ferromagnetic (FM) edge-sharing CuO2 chain (FFESC) cuprates. A homogeneous spin-1/2 chain model with a FM nearest-neighbor (NN), an antiferromagnetic (AFM) next-nearest-neighbor (NNN) inchain, and two diagonal AFM interchain couplings (ICs) analyzed within linear spin-wave theory (LSWT) reproduces well the observed strong dispersion along the chains and a weak one perpendicularly. The ratio R=|J_{a2}/J_{a1}| of the FM NN and the AFM NNN couplings is found as ~0.23, close to the critical point Rc=1/4 which separates ferromagnetically and antiferromagnetically correlated spiral magnetic ground states in single chains, whereas Rc>0.25 for coupled chains is considerably upshifted even for relatively weak IC. Although the measured dispersion can be described by homogeneous LSWT, the scattering intensity appears to be considerably reduced at ~11.5 and ~28 meV. The gap-like feature at 11.5 meV is attributed to magnon-phonon coupling whereas based on DMRG simulations of the dynamical structure factor the gap at 28 meV is considered to stem partly from quantum effects due to the AFM IC. Another contribution is ascribed to the intrinsic superstructure from the distorting incommensurate pattern of CaY cationic chains adjacent to the CuO2 ones. It gives rise to non-equivalent CuO4 units and Cu-O-Cu bond angles Phi and a resulting distribution of all exchange integrals. The J's fitted by homogeneous LSWT are regarded as average values. The record value of the FM NN integral J1=24 meV among FFESC cuprates can be explained by a non-universal Phi (not 90 deg.) and Cu-O bond length dependent anisotropic mean direct FM Cu-O exchange K_{pd}~120 meV. Enhanced K_{pd} values are also needed to compensate a significant AFM J_{dd} > ~6 meV.

The interplay between the nematic order and magnetism in FeSe is not yet well understood. There is a controversy concerning the relationship between orbital and spin degrees of freedom in FeSe and their relevance for superconductivity. Here we investigate the effect of S substitution on the nematic transition temperature ($T_{\rm n}$) and the low-energy spin fluctuations (SF) in FeSe single crystals. We show that the low-energy SF emerge below the nematic transition. The difference between the onset temperature for the critical SF ($T_{\rm SF}$) and $T_{\rm n}$ is small for FeSe but significantly increases with S substitution. Below $T_{\rm SF}$ the Korringa relation is violated and the effective muon hyperfine coupling constant changes a sign. Our results exclude a direct coupling of the low-energy SF to the electronic nematic order indicating a presence of multiple spin degrees of freedom in FeSe$_{\rm 1-x}$S$_{\rm x}$.

We carried out point contact (PC) investigation of WTe2 single crystals. We measured Yanson d2V/dI2 PC spectra of the electron-phonon interaction (EPI) in WTe2. The spectra demonstrate a main phonon peak around 8 meV and a shallow second maximum near 16 meV. Their position is in line with the calculation of the EPI spectra of WTe2 in the literature, albeit phonons with higher energy are not resolved in our PC spectra. An additional contribution to the spectra is present above the phonon energy, what may be connected with the peculiar electronic band structure and need to be clarified. We detected tiny superconducting features in d2V/dI2 close to zero bias, which broadens by increasing temperature and blurs above 6K. Thus, (surface) superconductivity may exist in WTe2 with a topologically nontrivial state. We found a broad maximum in dV/dI at large voltages (>200 mV) indicating change of conductivity from metallic to semiconducting type. The latter might be induced by the high current density (~10^8 A/cm^2) in the PC and/or local heating, thus enabling the manipulation of the quantum electronic states at the interface in the PC core.

We report on a detailed neutron diffraction and $^1$H-NMR study on the frustrated spin-1/2 chain material linarite, PbCuSO$_4$(OH)$_2$, where competing ferromagnetic nearest neighbor and antiferromagnetic next-nearest neighbor interactions lead to frustration. From the magnetic Bragg peak intensity studied down to 60 mK, the magnetic moment per Cu atom is obtained within the whole magnetic phase diagram for $H \parallel b$ axis. Further, we establish the detailed configurations of the shift of the SDW propagation vector in phase V with field and temperature. Finally, combining our neutron diffraction results with those from a low-temperature/high-field NMR study we find an even more complex phase diagram close to the quasi-saturation field suggesting that bound two-magnon excitations are the lowest energy excitations close to and in the quasi-saturation regime. Qualitatively and semi-quantitatively, we relate such behavior to $XYZ$ exchange anisotropy and contributions from the Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interaction to affect the magnetic properties of linarite.

However, there are several families of superconductors, in which superconductivity may coexist with magnetism, and only a few examples are known, when superconductivity itself induces spontaneous magnetism. The most known compounds are Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ and some noncentrosymmetric superconductors. Here, we report the finding of a narrow dome of a novel $s+is'$ superconducting (SC) phase with broken time-reversal symmetry (BTRS) inside the broad $s$-wave SC region of the centrosymmetric multiband superconductor Ba$_{\rm 1-x}$K$_{\rm x}$Fe$_2$As$_2$ ($0.7 \lesssim x \lesssim 0.85$). We observe spontaneous magnetic fields inside this dome using the muon spin relaxation ($μ$SR) technique. Furthermore, our detailed specific heat study reveals that the BTRS dome appears very close to a change in the topology of the Fermi surface (Lifshitz transition). With this, we experimentally demonstrate the emergence of a novel quantum state due to topological changes of the electronic system.

The big increase of the Sommerfeld coefficient $γ$ from K122 to Cs122 is ascribed to an enhanced coupling to low-energy bosons in the vicinity of a quantum critical point to an unknown, yet incommensurate phase different from the commensurate Mott one. We find no sizeable increase in correlations for Cs122 in contrast to F. Eilers et al., PRL v. 116, 237003 (2016) [3]. The empirical (ARPES) VHS positions as compared with GGA-predictions point even to slightly weaker correlations in Cs122 in accord with low-$T$ magnetic susceptibility $χ(T)$ data and a decreasing Wilson ratio $\propto χ(0)/γ$.

We consider an elementary frustrated 1D system: the spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ ferromagnetic ($J_1$) Heisenberg chain with next-nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic ($J_2$) interactions. On the basis of density-matrix renormalization group calculations we show the existence of a finite spin gap at $J_2/|J_1|>1/4$ and we find the ground state in this region to be a valence bond solid (VBS) with spin-singlet dimerization between third-neighbor sites. The VBS is the consequence of spontaneous symmetry breaking through order by disorder. Quite interestingly, this VBS state has a Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki-type topological order. This is the first example of a frustrated spin chain in which quantum fluctuations induce gapped topological order.

MoTe2 is a Weyl semimetal, which exhibits unique non-saturating magnetoresistance and strongly reinforced superconductivity under pressure. Here, we demonstrate that a novel mesoscopic superconductivity at ambient pressure arises on the surface of MoTe2 with a critical temperature up to 5 K significantly exceeding the bulk Tc=0.1K. We measured the derivatives of I-V curves for metallic hetero-contacts of MoTe2 with Ag or Cu, homo-contacts of MoTe2 as well as "soft" point contacts (PCs). Large number of these hetero-contacts exhibit a dV/dI dependence, which is characteristic for Andreev reflection. It allows to determine the superconducting gap Δ. The average gap values are 2Δ=1.30+/-0.15 meV with a 2Δ/kBTc ratio of 3.7+/-0.4, which slightly exceeds the standard BCS value of 3.52. Furthermore, the temperature dependence of the gap follows a BCS-like behavior, which points to a nodeless superconducting order parameter with some strong-coupling renormalization. Remarkably, the observation of a "gapless-like" single minimum in the dV/dI of "soft" PCs may indicate a topological superconducting state of the MoTe2 surface as these contacts probe mainly the interface and avoid additional pressure effect. Therefore, MoTe2 might be a suitable material to study new forms of topological superconductivity.

A nematic transition preceding a long-range spin density wave antiferromagnetic phase is a common feature of many Fe based superconductors. However, in the FeSe system with a nematic transition at $T_{\rm s} \approx$ 90 K no evidence for long-range static magnetism down to very low temperature was found. The lack of magnetism is a challenge for the theoretical description of FeSe. Here, we investigated high-quality single crystals of FeSe using high-field (up to 9.5 Tesla) muon spin rotation ($μ$SR) measurements. The $μ$SR Knight shift and the bulk susceptibility linearly scale at high temperatures but deviate from this behavior around $T^{*} \sim 10$ K, where the Knight shift exhibits a kink. This behavior hints to an essential change of the electronic and/or magnetic properties crossing the region near $T^{*}$. In the temperature range $T_{\rm s} \gtrsim T \gtrsim T^{*}$ the muon spin depolarization rate follows a critical behavior $Λ\propto T^{-0.4}$. The observed non-Fermi liquid behavior with a cutoff at $T^{*}$ indicates that FeSe is in the vicinity to a antiferromagnetic quantum critical point. Our analysis is suggestive for $T^{*}$ triggered by the Lifshitz transition.

In a recent work devoted to the magnetism of Li$_{2}$CuO$_{2}$, Shu et al. [New J. Phys. 19 (2017) 023026] have proposed a "simplified" unfrustrated microscopic model that differs considerably from the models refined through decades of prior work. We show that the proposed model is at odds with known experimental data, including the reported magnetic susceptibility $χ(T)$ data up to 550~K. Using an 8$^{\rm th}$ order high-temperature expansion for $χ(T)$, we show that the experimental data for Li$_{2}$CuO$_{2}$ are consistent with the prior model derived from inelastic neutron scattering (INS) studies. We also establish the $T$-range of validity for a Curie-Weiss law for the real frustrated magnetic system. We argue that the knowledge of the long-range ordered magnetic structure for $T<T_N$ and of $χ(T)$ in a restricted $T$-range provides insufficient information to extract all of the relevant couplings in frustrated magnets; the saturation field and INS data must also be used to determine several exchange couplings, including the weak but decisive frustrating antiferromagnetic (AFM) interchain couplings.

Within a Ginzburg-Landau formalism we establish analytically the necessary and sufficient conditions to realize a doubly degenerate superconducting ground state with broken time-reversal symmetry (BTRS) in a multi-band superconductor. Using these results we analyze the ground state of a three-band superconductor in the cylindrical geometry in an external magnetic field. We show that depending on the interband coupling constants, a magnetic flux can induce current density jumps in such superconducting geometries that are related to adiabatic or non-adiabatic transitions from BTRS to time-reversal symmetric states and vice versa. This unusual current induced magnetic flux response can in principle be used experimentally to detect superconducting BTRS ground states as well as corresponding metastable excited states.

A quantum critical point (QCP) is currently being conjectured for the BaFe$_2$(As$_{1-x}$P$_x$)$_2$ system at the critical value $x_{\rm c} \approx$ 0.3. In the proximity of a QCP, all thermodynamic and transport properties are expected to scale with a single characteristic energy, given by the quantum fluctuations. Such an universal behavior has not, however, been found in the superconducting upper critical field $H_{\rm c2}$. Here we report $H_{\rm c2}$-data for epitaxial thin films extracted from the electrical resistance measured in very high magnetic fields up to 67 Tesla. Using a multi-band analysis we find that $H_{\rm c2}$ is sensitive to the QCP, implying a significant charge carrier effective mass enhancement at the doping-induced QCP that is essentially band-dependent. Our results point to two qualitatively different groups of electrons in BaFe$_2$(As$_{1-x}$P$_x$)$_2$. The first one (possibly associated to hot spots or whole Fermi sheets) has a strong mass enhancement at the QCP, and the second one is insensitive to the QCP. The observed duality could also be present in many other quantum critical systems.

By use of ultrasound studies we resolved magneto-acoustic quantum oscillation deep into the mixed state of the multiband nonmagnetic superconductor YNi2B2C. Below the upper critical field, only a very weak additional damping appears that can be well explained by the field inhomogeneity caused by the flux-line lattice in the mixed state. This is clear evidence for no or a vanishingly small gap for one of the bands, namely, the spheroidal alpha band. This contrasts de Haas--van Alphen data obtained by use of torque magnetometry for the same sample, with a rapidly vanishing oscillation signal in the mixed state. This points to a strongly distorted flux-line lattice in the latter case that, in general, can hamper a reliable extraction of gap parameters by use of such techniques.

At present, there is still no consistent interpretation of the normal and superconducting properties of Fe-based superconductors (FeSCs). The strength of the el-el interaction and the role of correlation effects are under debate. Here, we examine several common materials and illustrate various problems and concepts that are generic for all FeSCs. Based on empirical observations and qualitative insight from density functional theory, we show that the superconducting and low-energy thermodynamic properties of the FeSCs can be described semi-quantitively within multiband Eliashberg theory. We account for an important high-energy mass renormalization phenomenologically, and in agreement with constraints provided by thermodynamic, optical, and angle-resolved photoemission data. When seen in this way, all FeSCs with $T_\mathrm{c} <$ 40~K studied so far are found to belong to an {\it intermediate} coupling regime. This finding is in contrast to the strong coupling scenarios proposed in the early period of the FeSC history. We also discuss several related issues, including the role of band shifts as measured by the positions of van Hove singularities, and the nature of a recently suggested quantum critical point in the strongly hole-doped systems AFe$_2$As$_2$ (A = K, Rb, Cs). Using high-precision full relativistic GGA-band structure calculations, we arrive at a somewhat milder mass renormalization in comparison with previous studies. From the calculated mass anisotropies of all Fermi surface sheets, only the $\varepsilon$-pocket near the corner of the BZ is compatible with the experimentally observed anisotropy of the upper critical field. pointing to its dominant role in the superconductivity of these three compounds.

Using the density-matrix renormalization group technique and spin-wave theory we find a first-order transition between a fully-polarized FM and an incommensurate spiral state at $2α=β/(1+β)$, where $α$ is the frustration ratio $J_2/|J_1|$ and $β$ the degree of dimerization $J_1^\prime/J_1$.In the singlet spiral state the spin-gap is vanishingly small in the vicinity of the FM transition, corresponding to a situation of LiCuSbO$_4$. For larger $α$, corresponding to Rb$_2$Cu$_2$Mo$_3$O$_{12}$, and smaller $β$ there is a crossover from this frustration induced incommensurate state to an Affleck-Lieb-Kennedy-Tasaki-type valence bond solid state with substantial spin-gaps.

From this we confirm that the interchain couplings within linarite are around 10% of the nearest neighbour intrachain interactions. We analyse the data within both linear spin-wave theory and density matrix renormalisation group theories and establish the main magnetic exchange interactions and the simplest realistic Hamiltonian for this material.

Cuprate materials, like those hosting high temperature superconductivity, represent a famous class of materials where the correlations between the strongly entangled charges and spins produce complex phase diagrams. Several years ago the Zhang-Rice singlet was proposed as a natural quasiparticle in hole-doped cuprates. The occurance and binding energy of this quasiparticle, consisting of a pair of bound holes with antiparallel spins on the same CuO$_4$ plaquette, depends on the local electronic interactions, which are fundamental quantities for understanding the physics of the cuprates. Here, we employ state-of-the-art Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering (RIXS) to probe the correlated physics of the CuO$_4$ plaquettes in the quasi-one dimensional chain cuprate Li$_2$CuO$_2$. By tuning the incoming photon energy to the O $K$-edge, we populate bound states related to the Zhang-Rice quasiparticles in the RIXS process. Both intra- and interchain Zhang-Rice singlets are observed and their occurrence is shown to depend on the nearest-neighbor spin-spin correlations, which are readily probed in this experiment. We also extract the binding energy of the Zhang-Rice singlet and identify the Zhang-Rice triplet excitation in the RIXS spectra.

Modern theories of quantum magnetism predict exotic multipolar states in weakly interacting strongly frustrated spin-1/2 Heisenberg chains with ferromagnetic nearest neighbor (NN) inchain exchange in high magnetic fields. Experimentally these states remained elusive so far. Here we report the evidence for a long-sought magnetic field-induced nematic state arising above a field of $\sim 13$ T in the edge-sharing chain cuprate LiSbCuO$_4$ $\equiv$ LiCuSbO$_4$. This interpretation is based on the observation of a field induced spin-gap in the measurements of the $^7$Li NMR spin relaxation rate $T_1^{-1}$ as well as a contrasting field-dependent power-law behavior of $T_1^{-1}$ vs. $T$ and is further supported by static magnetization and ESR data. An underlying theoretical microscopic approach favoring a nematic scenario is based essentially on the NN XYZ exchange anisotropy within a model for frustrated spin-1/2 chains. It is investigated by the DMRG technique. The employed exchange parameters are justified qualitatively by electronic structure calculations for LiCuSbO$_4$.

The Hall effect is a powerful tool for investigating carrier type and density. For single-band materials, the Hall coefficient is traditionally expressed simply by $R_H^{-1} = -en$, where $e$ is the charge of the carrier, and $n$ is the concentration. However, it is well known that in the critical region near a quantum phase transition, as it was demonstrated for cuprates and heavy fermions, the Hall coefficient exhibits strong temperature and doping dependencies, which can not be described by such a simple expression, and the interpretation of the Hall coefficient for Fe-based superconductors is also problematic. Here, we investigate thin films of Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ with compressive and tensile in-plane strain in a wide range of Co doping. Such in-plane strain changes the band structure of the compounds, resulting in various shifts of the whole phase diagram as a function of Co doping. We show that the resultant phase diagrams for different strain states can be mapped onto a single phase diagram with the Hall number. This universal plot is attributed to the critical fluctuations in multiband systems near the antiferromagnetic transition, which may suggest a direct link between magnetic and superconducting properties in the BaFe$_2$As$_2$ system.

For this purpose a dynamical mode-mode coupling theory is developed based on the coupled Bethe-Salpeter equations. In order to investigate the region of the phase diagram not too far from the tetracritical point where the magnetic spin density wave, (SDW) and superconducting (SC) transition temperatures coincide, we also construct a Ginzburg - Landau functional including both SC and SDW fluctuations in a critical region above the transition temperatures. The fluctuation corrections tend to suppress the magnetic transition, but in the superconducting channel the intraband and interband contribution of the fluctuations nearly compensate each other.

Strongly correlated insulators are broadly divided into two classes: Mott-Hubbard insulators, where the insulating gap is driven by the Coulomb repulsion $U$ on the transition-metal cation, and charge-transfer insulators, where the gap is driven by the charge transfer energy $Δ$ between the cation and the ligand anions. The relative magnitudes of $U$ and $Δ$ determine which class a material belongs to, and subsequently the nature of its low-energy excitations. These energy scales are typically understood through the local chemistry of the active ions. Here we show that the situation is more complex in the low-dimensional charge transfer insulator Li$_\mathrm{2}$CuO$_\mathrm{2}$, where $Δ$ has a large non-electronic component. Combining resonant inelastic x-ray scattering with detailed modeling, we determine how the elementary lattice, charge, spin, and orbital excitations are entangled in this material. This results in a large lattice-driven renormalization of $Δ$, which significantly reshapes the fundamental electronic properties of Li$_\mathrm{2}$CuO$_\mathrm{2}$.

A two-step spin-flop transition is observed as well as a transition transforming a helical magnetic ground state into an unusual magnetic phase with sine-wave modulated moments $\parallel H$. An effective $\tilde{J}_1$-$\tilde{J}_2$ single-chain model with a magnetization-dependent frustration ratio $α_{\rm eff} = -\tilde{J}_2/\tilde{J}_1$ is proposed. The latter is governed by skew interchain couplings and shifted to the vicinity of the ferromagnetic critical point. It explains qualitatively the observation of a rich variety of exotic (for strongly correlated cuprate spin-1/2 Heisenberg systems) longitudinal collinear spin-density wave SDW$_p$ states ($9 \geq p \geq 2$).

The effect of hydrostatic pressure and partial Na substitution on the normal-state properties and the superconducting transition temperature ($T_c$) of K$_{1-x}$Na$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$ single crystals were investigated. It was found that a partial Na substitution leads to a deviation from the standard $T^2$ Fermi-liquid behavior in the temperature dependence of the normal-state resistivity. It was demonstrated that non-Fermi liquid like behavior of the resistivity for K$_{1-x}$Na$_{x}$Fe$_2$As$_2$ and some KFe$_2$As$_2$ samples can be explained by disorder effect in the multiband system with rather different quasiparticle effective masses. Concerning the superconducting state our data support the presence of a shallow minimum around 2 GPa in the pressure dependence of $T_c$ for stoichiometric KFe$_2$As$_2$. The analysis of $T_c$ in the K$_{1-x}$Na$_{x}$Fe$_2$As$_2$ at pressures below 1.5 GPa showed, that the reduction of $T_c$ with Na substitution follows the Abrikosov-Gor'kov law with the critical temperature $T_{c0}$ of the clean system (without pair-breaking) which linearly depends on the pressure. Our observations, also, suggest that $T_c$ of K$_{1-x}$Na$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$ is nearly independent of the lattice compression produced by the Na substitution. Further, we theoretically analyzed the behavior of the band structure under pressure within the generalized gradient approximation (GGA). A qualitative agreement between the calculated and the recently in de Haas-van Alphen experiments [T. Terashima et al., Phys.Rev.B89, 134520(2014)] measured pressure dependencies of the Fermi-surface cross-sections has been found. These calculations, also, indicate that the observed minimum around 2~GPa in the pressure dependence of $T_c$ may occur without a change of the pairing symmetry.

The addenda heat capacity of the calorimeter is determined in the temperature range $0.02 \, \mathrm{K} \leq T \leq 0.54 \, \mathrm{K}$. The data of the \kn\ crystal imply the presence of a large $T^2$ contribution to the specific heat which gives evidence of $d$-wave order parameter symmetry in the superconducting state. To improve the measurements, a novel design for a calorimeter with a paramagnetic temperature sensor is presented. It promises a temperature resolution of $ΔT \approx 0.1 \, \mathrm{μK}$ and an addenda heat capacity less than $200 \, \mathrm{pJ/K}$ at $ T < 100 \, \mathrm{mK}$.

We investigate the spin-1/2 Heisenberg model on the delta chain (sawtooth chain) with ferromagnetic nearest-neighbor and antiferromagnetic next-neighbor interactions. For a special ratio between these interactions there is a class of exact ground states formed by localized magnons and the ground state is macroscopically degenerate with a large residual entropy per spin $s_0=\frac{1}{2}\ln 2$. An important feature of this model is a sharp decrease of the gaps for excited states with an increase of the number of magnons. These excitations give an essential contribution to the low-temperature thermodynamics. The behavior of the considered model is compared with that of the delta chain with both antiferromagnetic interactions.

We report a low-temperature specific heat study of high-quality single crystals of the heavily hole doped superconductor Ca$_{0.32}$Na$_{0.68}$Fe$_2$As$_2$. This compound exhibits bulk superconductivity with a transition temperature $T_c \approx 34$\,K, which is evident from the magnetization, transport, and specific heat measurements. The zero field data manifests a significant electronic specific heat in the normal state with a Sommerfeld coefficient $γ\approx 53$ mJ/mol K$^{2}$. Using a multi-band Eliashberg analysis, we demonstrate that the dependence of the zero field specific heat in the superconducting state is well described by a three-band model with an unconventional s$_\pm$ pairing symmetry and gap magnitudes $Δ_i$ of approximately 2.35, 7.48, and -7.50 meV. Our analysis indicates a non-negligible attractive intraband coupling, which contributes significantly to the relatively high value of $T_c$. The Fermi surface averaged repulsive and attractive coupling strengths are of comparable size and outside the strong coupling limit frequently adopted for describing high-$T_c$ iron pnictide superconductors. We further infer a total mass renormalization of the order of five, including the effects of correlations and electron-boson interactions.

Both $T_c$ and $ΔC_{\rm el}$ monotonously decrease with increasing $x$. The specific heat jump scales approximately with a power-law, $ΔC_{\rm el} \propto T_c^β$, with $β\approx 2$ determined by the impurity scattering rate, in contrast to most iron-pnictide superconductors, where the remarkable Bud'ko-Ni-Canfield (BNC) scaling $ΔC_{\rm el} \propto T^3$ has been found. Both the $T$ dependence of $C_{\rm el}(T)$ in the superconducting state and the nearly quadratic scaling of $ΔC_{\rm el}$ at $T_c$ are well described by the Eliashberg-theory for a two-band $d$-wave superconductor with weak pair-breaking due to nonmagnetic impurities. The disorder induced by the Na substitution significantly suppresses the small gaps leading to gapless states in the slightly disordered superconductor, which results in a large observed residual Sommerfeld coefficient in the superconducting state for $x > 0$.

Within the framework of this three-band Ginzburg-Landau theory, expressions for the critical temperature Tc and the temperature dependence of the upper critical field H_c2 are obtained. Based on some special cases of the matrix of interaction constants, we demonstrate the influence of the sign of the interband interaction on the critical temperature and the upper critical field as compared with a two-band superconductor where it plays no role. We study also analytically and numerically the effect of its magnitude.

We present a comprehensive macroscopic thermodynamic study of the quasi-one-dimensional (1D) $s = \tfrac{1}{2}$ frustrated spin-chain system linarite. Susceptibility, magnetization, specific heat, magnetocaloric effect, magnetostriction, and thermal-expansion measurements were performed to characterize the magnetic phase diagram. In particular, for magnetic fields along the b axis five different magnetic regions have been detected, some of them exhibiting short-range-order effects. The experimental magnetic entropy and magnetization are compared to a theoretical modelling of these quantities using DMRG and TMRG approaches. Within the framework of a purely 1D isotropic model Hamiltonian, only a qualitative agreement between theory and the experimental data can be achieved. Instead, it is demonstrated that a significant symmetric anisotropic exchange of about 10% is necessary to account for the basic experimental observations, including the 3D saturation field, and which in turn might stabilize a triatic (three-magnon) multipolar phase.

Three representative types of inter-chain coupling and the presence of uniaxial exchange anisotropy are considered. The magnetic phase diagrams are determined by Density Matrix Renormalization Group calculations and completed by exact analytic results for the nematic and dipolar phases. We establish that the residual couplings strongly affect the pitch of spiral states and their instability to multipolar phases. Our theoretical results bring to the fore novel candidate materials close to quantum nematic/triatic ordering.

As-vacancies (V_As) in La-1111-systems, which are nominally non-magnetic defects, are shown to create in their vicinity by symmetry ferromagnetically oriented local magnetic moments due to the strong, covalent bonds with neighboring Fe atoms that they break. From microscopic theory in terms of an appropriately modified Anderson-Wolff model, we find that the moment formation results in a substantially enhanced paramagnetic susceptibility in both the normal and superconducting (SC) state. Despite the V_As act as magnetic scatterers, they do not deteriorate SC properties which can even be improved by V_As by suppressing a competing or coexisting commensurate spin density wave or its remnant fluctuations. Due to the induced local magnetic moments an s_++-scenario in related systems is unlikely.

High-quality KFe2As2 (K122) single crystals synthesized by different techniques have been studied by magnetization and specific heat (SH) measurements. There are 2 types of samples both affected by disordered magnetic phases: (i) cluster-glass (CG) like or (ii) Griffiths phase (G) like. For (i) at low applied magnetic fields the T-dependence of the zero field cooled (ZFC) linear susceptibility (chi_l) exhibits an anomaly with an irreversible behavior in ZFC and field cooled (FC) data. This anomaly is related to the freezing temperature T_f. The extrapolated T_f to B=0 varies between 50 K and 90 K. Below T_f we observed a magnetic hysteresis in the field dependence of the isothermal magnetization (M(B)). The frequency shift of the freezing temperature delta T_f=Delta T_f/[T_fΔ(\ln ν)]\sim 0.05$ has an intermediate value, which provides evidence for the formation of a CG-like state in the K122 samples of type (i). The frequency dependence of their T_f follows a conventional power-law divergence of critical slowing down: tau=tau_0 [T_f(nu)/T_f(0)-1]^{-zν^{'}} with the critical exponent zν^{'}=10(2) and a relatively long characteristic time constant tau_0 =6.9 x10^{-11}$s also supporting a CG behavior. The large value of the Sommerfeld coefficient was related to magnetic contribution from a CG. Samples from (ii) did not show a hysteresis behavior for chi_l(T) and M(B). Below a crossover temperature T^* sim 40 K a power-law dependence in the chi_l propto T^[lambda_G-1}], with a non-universal lambda_G was observed, suggesting a quantum G-like behavior. In this case chi_l and M(B) can be scaled using the scaling function M_s(T,B)= B^{1-λ_{\tiny G}}Y(mu B/k_BT) with the scaling moment mu of the order of 3.5mu_b. The same non-universal exponent was found also in SH measurements, where the magnetic contribution C/T propto T^(lambda_G-1).

High-quality KFe2As2 single crystals have been studied by transport, magnetization and low-T specific heat measurements. Their analysis shows that superconductivity occurs (in some cases coexists) in the vicinity of disordered magnetic phases (Griffiths and spin-glass type) depending of the amount of local magnetic moments (probably excess Fe derived)and sample inhomogeneity. The achieved phenomenological description of our data including also data from the literature provides a consistent explanation of the observed non-Fermi-liquid behavior and of the nominally large experimental Sommerfeld coefficient gamma_n about 94 mJ/mol K^2. We suggest that the intrinsic value (directly related to the itinerant quasi-particles) gamma_el about 60(10)mJ/mol K^2 is significantly reduced compared with gamma_n. Then an enhanced relative jump of the electronic specific heat Delta C_el/gamma_el T_c about 0.8 and a weak total electron-boson coupling constant lambda less or about 1 follow.

We report low-temperature specific heat measurements for high-quality single crystalline KFe2As2 (T_c about 3.5 K). The investigated zero-field specific heat data yields an unusually large nominal Sommerfeld coefficient gamma_n of 94(3) mJ/mol K^2 which is however significantly affected by extrinsic contributions as evidenced by a sizable residual linear specific heat and various theoretical considerations including also an analysis of Kadowaki-Woods relations. Then KFe2As2 should be classified as a weak to intermediately strong coupling superconductor with a total electron-boson coupling constant lambda_tot near 1 (including a calculated weak electron-phonon coupling constant of lambda_el-ph =0.17. From specific heat and ac susceptibility studies in external magnetic fields the magnetic phase diagram has been constructed. We confirm the high anisotropy of the upper critical fields B_c2(T) ranging from a factor of 5 near T_c to a slightly reduced value approaching T=0 for fields B || ab$ and || c and show that their ratio Gamma slightly exceeds the mass anisotropy of 4.35 derived from our full-relativistic LDA-band structure calculations. Its slight reduction when approaching T=0 is not a consequence of Pauli-limiting as in less perfect samples but point likely to a multiband effect. We also report irreversibility field data obtained from ac susceptibility measurements. The double-maximum in the T-dependence of its imaginary part for fields B || c indicates a peak-effect in the T-dependence of critical currents.

We present a detailed study in the paramagnetic regime of the frustrated $s$ = 1/2 spin-compound linarite, PbCuSO$_4$(OH)$_2$, with competing ferromagnetic nearest-neighbor and antiferromagnetic next-nearest-neighbor exchange interactions. Our data reveal highly anisotropic values for the saturation field along the crystallographic main directions, with $\sim$ 7.6, $\sim$ 10.5 and $\sim$ 8.5\,T for the $a$, $b$, and $c$ axes, respectively. In the paramagnetic regime, this behavior is explained mainly by the anisotropy of the \textit{g}-factor but leaving room for an easy-axis exchange anisotropy. Within the isotropic $J_1$-$J_2$ spin model our experimental data are described by various theoretical approaches yielding values for the exchange interactions $J_1$ $\sim$ -100\,K and $J_2$ $\sim$ 36\,K. These main intrachain exchange integrals are significantly larger as compared to the values derived in two previous studies in the literature and shift the frustration ratio $α= J_2/|J_1|$ $\approx$ 0.36 of linarite closer to the 1D critical point at 0.25. Electron spin resonance (ESR) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements further prove that the static susceptibility is dominated by the intrinsic spin susceptibility. The Knight shift as well as the broadening of the linewidth in ESR and NMR at elevated temperatures indicate a highly frustrated system with the onset of magnetic correlations far above the magnetic ordering temperature $T_\mathrm{N}$ = 2.75(5)\,K, in agreement with the calculated exchange constants.

The data reveal that the magnetic Cu-O chains in the crystal structure represent a realization of a quasi-one dimensional (1D) coupled alternating spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain model with relevant pathways through non-magnetic AsO_4 tetrahedra. Owing to residual 3D interactions antiferromagnetic long range ordering at T_N\simeq10K takes place. Application of external magnetic field B along the magnetically easy axis induces the transition to a spin-flop phase at B_{SF}~1.7T (2K). The experimental data suggest that substantial quantum spin fluctuations take place at low magnetic fields in the ordered state. DFT calculations confirm the quasi-one-dimensional nature of the spin lattice, with the leading coupling J_1 within the structural dimers. QMC fits to the magnetic susceptibility evaluate J_1=164K, the weaker intrachain coupling J'_1/J_1 = 0.55, and the effective interchain coupling J_{ic1}/J_1 = 0.20.
