$K^+Λらむだ(1520)$ photoproduction at forward angles near threshold with the BGOOD experiment

Abstract: The differential cross section for $γがんまp\rightarrow K^+Λらむだ(1520)$ was measured from threshold to a centre-of-mass energy of 2090\,MeV at forward angles at the BGOOD experiment. The high statistical precision and resolution in centre-of-mass energy and angle allows a detailed characterisation of this low-momentum transfer kinematic region. The distribution of the differential cross section has an excellent agreement with a model including quasi-free $Δでるたπぱい$ photoproduction, pion re-scattering and $N(1535)$ formation and subsequent nucleon coalescence to the deuteron. This also gives a reasonable description of the two-body invariant mass distributions and naturally explains the similar magnitudes of this channel and $πぱい^0πぱい^0 d$ coherent photoproduction. △ Less

Abstract: The Crystal Barrel is an electromagnetic calorimeter consisting of 1380 CsI(Tl) scintillators, and is currently installed at the CBELSA/TAPS experiment where it is used to detect decay products from photoproduction of mesons. The readout of the Crystal Barrel has been upgraded in order to integrate the detector into the first level of the trigger and to increase its sensitivity for neutral final s… ▽ More The Crystal Barrel is an electromagnetic calorimeter consisting of 1380 CsI(Tl) scintillators, and is currently installed at the CBELSA/TAPS experiment where it is used to detect decay products from photoproduction of mesons. The readout of the Crystal Barrel has been upgraded in order to integrate the detector into the first level of the trigger and to increase its sensitivity for neutral final states. The new readout uses avalanche photodiodes in the front-end and a dual back-end with branches optimized for energy and time measurement, respectively. An FPGA-based cluster finder processes the whole hit pattern within less than 100 ns. The important downside of APDs -- the temperature dependence of their gain -- is handled with a temperature stabilization and a compensating bias voltage supply. Additionally, a light pulser system allows the APDs' gains to be measured during beamtimes. △ Less

Abstract: Measurements of target asymmetries and double-polarization observables for the reaction $γがんまp\to pπぱい^0πぱい^0$ are reported. The data were taken with the CBELSA/TAPS experiment at the ELSA facility (Bonn University) using the Bonn frozen-spin butanol (C$_4$H$_9$OH) target, which provided transversely polarized protons. Linearly polarized photons were produced via bremsstrahlung off a diamond crystal. Abstract: The reaction $γがんまp \rightarrow p πぱい^0 ηいーた$ has been studied with the CBELSA/TAPS detector at the electron stretcher accelerator ELSA in Bonn for incident photon energies from threshold up to 3.1 GeV. This paper has been motivated by the recently claimed observation of a narrow structure in the M$_{Nηいーた}$ invariant mass distribution at a mass of 1678 MeV/$c^2$. The existence of this structure cannot be co… ▽ More The reaction $γがんまp \rightarrow p πぱい^0 ηいーた$ has been studied with the CBELSA/TAPS detector at the electron stretcher accelerator ELSA in Bonn for incident photon energies from threshold up to 3.1 GeV. This paper has been motivated by the recently claimed observation of a narrow structure in the M$_{Nηいーた}$ invariant mass distribution at a mass of 1678 MeV/$c^2$. The existence of this structure cannot be confirmed in the present work. Instead, for E$_γがんま$ = 1400 - 1500 MeV and the cut M$_{pπぱい^0} \le 1190 $ MeV/$c^2$ a statistically significant structure in the M$_{pηいーた}$ invariant mass distribution near 1700 MeV/$c^2$ is observed with a width of $Γがんま\approx 35$ MeV/$c^2$ while the mass resolution is $σしぐま_{res}$ = 5 MeV/$c^2$. Increasing the incident photon energy from 1420 to 1540 MeV this structure shifts in mass from $\approx$ 1700MeV/c$^2$ to $\approx$ 1725 MeV/$c^2$; the width increases to about 50 MeV/$c^2$ and decreases thereafter. The cross section associated with this structure reaches a maximum of $\approx$ 100 nb around E$_γがんま \approx$ 1490 MeV (W $\approx $ 1920 MeV), which coincides with the $p a_0$ threshold. Three scenarios are discussed which might be the origin of this structure in the M$_{pηいーた}$ invariant mass distribution. The most likely interpretation is that it is due to a triangular singularity in the $γがんまp \rightarrow p a_0 \rightarrow p πぱい^0 ηいーた$ reaction △ Less

The $Λらむだ(1405)$ can be produced in the reaction $γがんまp \rightarrow K^+Λらむだ(1405)$. The setup consists of a highly segmented BGO calorimeter surrounding the target, with a particle tracking magnetic spectrometer at forward angles. BGO-OD is ideal for investigating low momentum transfer processes due to the acceptance and high momentum resolution at forward angles. In particular, this enables the investigation of strangeness photoproduction where t-channel exchange mechanisms play an important role. This also allows access to low momentum exchange kinematics where extended, molecular structure may manifest in reaction mechanisms. First key results at low $t$ indicate a cusp-like structure in $K^+Σしぐま^0$ photoproduction at $W = 1900$\,MeV, line shapes and differential cross sections for $K^+Λらむだ$(1405)$\rightarrow K^+Σしぐま^0πぱい^0$, and a peak structure in $K^0_SΣしぐま^0$ photoproduction. The peak in the $K^0_SΣしぐま^0$ channel appears consistent with meson-baryon generated states, where equivalent models have been used to describe the $P_C$ pentaquark candidates in the heavy charmed quark sector. △ Less

Coincident protons have been identified in the MiniTAPS BaF$_2$ array at polar angles of $2^{\circ} \le θしーた_{p} \le 11^{\circ}$. Under these kinematic constraints the $ηいーた^\prime$ mesons are produced with relatively low kinetic energy ($\approx$ 150 MeV) since the coincident protons take over most of the momentum of the incident-photon beam. For the C-target this allows the determination of the real part of the $ηいーた^\prime$-carbon potential at low meson momenta by comparing with collision model calculations of the $ηいーた^\prime$ kinetic energy distribution and excitation function. Fitting the latter data for $ηいーた^\prime$ mesons going backwards in the center-of-mass system yields a potential depth of V = $-$(44 $\pm$ 16(stat)$\pm$15(syst)) MeV, consistent with earlier determinations of the potential depth in inclusive measurements for average $ηいーた^\prime$ momenta of $\approx$ 1.1 GeV/$c$. Within the experimental uncertainties, there is no indication of a momentum dependence of the $ηいーた^\prime$-carbon potential. The LH$_2$ data, taken as a reference to check the data analysis and the model calculations, provide differential and integral cross sections in good agreement with previous results for $ηいーた^\prime$ photoproduction off the free proton. △ Less

Both data sets together were also used to extract the helicity dependent cross sections $σしぐま_{1/2}$ and $σしぐま_{3/2}$. The results are compared to recent theoretical predictions for the in-medium $ωおめが$ width and $ηいーた^\prime$-N absorption cross sections. The energy dependence of the imaginary part of the $ωおめが$- and $ηいーた^\prime$-nucleus optical potential has been extracted. The finer binning of the present data compared to the existing data allows a more reliable extrapolation towards the production threshold. The modulus of the imaginary part of the $ηいーた^\prime$ nucleus potential is found to be about three times smaller than recently determined values of the real part of the $ηいーた^\prime$-nucleus potential, which makes the $ηいーた^\prime$ meson a suitable candidate for the search for meson-nucleus bound states. For the $ωおめが$ meson, the modulus of the imaginary part near threshold is comparable to the modulus of the real part of the potential. As a consequence, only broad structures can be expected which makes the observation of $ωおめが$ mesic states very difficult experimentally. △ Less

These observables were measured from the radiative decay of the $ωおめが$ meson, $ωおめが\toπぱい^0γがんま$. The cross sections cover the full angular range and show the full extent of the $t$-c… ▽ More The differential cross sections and unpolarized spin-density matrix elements for the reaction $γがんまp\to pωおめが$ were measured using the CBELSA/TAPS experiment for initial photon energies ranging from the reaction threshold to 2.5 GeV. These observables were measured from the radiative decay of the $ωおめが$ meson, $ωおめが\toπぱい^0γがんま$. The cross sections cover the full angular range and show the full extent of the $t$-channel forward rise. The overall shape of the angular distributions in the differential cross sections and unpolarized spin-density matrix elements are in fair agreement with previous data. In addition, for the first time, a beam of linearly-polarized tagged photons in the energy range from 1150 MeV to 1650 MeV was used to extract polarized spin-density matrix elements. These data were included in the Bonn-Gatchina partial wave analysis (PWA). The dominant contribution to $ωおめが$ photoproduction near threshold was found to be the $3/2^+$ partial wave, which is primarily due to the sub-threshold $N(1720)\,3/2^+$ resonance. At higher energies, pomeron-exchange was found to dominate whereas $πぱい$-exchange remained small. These $t$-channel contributions as well as further contributions from nucleon resonances were necessary to describe the entire dataset: the $1/2^-$, $3/2^-$, and $5/2^+$ partial waves were also found to contribute significantly. △ Less

The data presented here allow us to determine branching ratios of nucleon and $Δでるた$ resonances for their decays into $pπぱい^0πぱい^0$ via several intermediate states. Measurement of double polarisation asymmetries in $ωおめが$-photoproduction

Abstract: The first measurements of the beam-target-helicity-asymmetries $E$ and $G$ in the photoproduction of $ωおめが$-mesons off protons at the CBELSA/TAPS experiment are reported. $E$ ($G$) was measured using circularly (linearly) polarised photons and a longitudinally polarised target. $E$ was measured over the photon energy range from close to threshold ($E_γがんま= 1108$~MeV) to $E_γがんま= 2300$~MeV and $G$ at a sing… ▽ More The first measurements of the beam-target-helicity-asymmetries $E$ and $G$ in the photoproduction of $ωおめが$-mesons off protons at the CBELSA/TAPS experiment are reported. $E$ ($G$) was measured using circularly (linearly) polarised photons and a longitudinally polarised target. $E$ was measured over the photon energy range from close to threshold ($E_γがんま= 1108$~MeV) to $E_γがんま= 2300$~MeV and $G$ at a single energy interval of $1108 < E_γがんま<1300$~MeV. Both measurements cover the full solid angle. The observables $E$ and $G$ are highly sensitive to the contribution of baryon resonances, with $E$ acting as a helicity filter in the $s$-channel. The new results indicate significant $s$-channel resonance contributions together with contributions from $t$-channel exchange processes. A partial wave analysis reveals strong contributions from the partial waves with spin-parity $J^P=3/2^+, 5/2^+$, and $3/2^-$. △ Less

Abstract: New data on the polarization observables T, P, and H for the reaction $γがんまp \to pπぱい^0$ are reported. The results are extracted from azimuthal asymmetries when a transversely polarized butanol target and a linearly polarized photon beam are used. The data were taken at the Bonn electron stretcher accelerator ELSA using the CBELSA/TAPS detector. Experimental constraints on the $ωおめが$-nucleus real potential

Structures in the total energy distribution of the $πぱい^0 γがんま$ pairs, which would indicate the population and decay of bound $ωおめが~^{11}$B states, are not observed. The $πぱい^0 γがんま$ cross section of 0.3 nb/MeV/sr observed in the bound state energy regime between -100 and 0 MeV may be accounted for by yield leaking into the bound state regime because of the large in-medium width of the $ωおめが$-meson. A comparison of the measured total energy distribution with calculations suggests the real part $V_0$ of the $ωおめが~^{11}$B potential to be small and only weakly attractive with $V_0(ρろー=ρろー_0) = -15\pm$ 35(stat) $\pm$20(syst) MeV in contrast to some theoretical predictions of attractive potentials with a depth of 100 - 150 MeV. △ Less

G describes the correlation between the photon polarization plane and the scattering plane for protons polarized along the direction of the incoming photon. No significant effects beyond the folding of the free cross section with the momentum distribution of the bound protons have been found. These Fermi motion effects can be removed by an analysis using the invariant mass of the $ηいーた$-nucleon pairs reconstructed from the final state four-momenta of the particles. The total cross section for quasi-free $ηいーた$-photoproduction off the neutron reveals even without correction for Fermi motion a pronounced bump-like structure around 1 GeV of incident photon energy, which is not observed for the proton. This structure is even narrower in the invariant mass spectrum of the $ηいーた$-neutron pairs. Position and width of the peak in the invariant mass spectrum are $W\approx 1665$ MeV and FWHM $Γがんま\approx 25$ MeV. The data are compared to the results of different models. △ Less

Application of the equipartition theorem to the thermal excitation of quartz tuning forks

Abstract: The deflection signal of a thermally excited force sensor of an atomic force microscope can be analyzed to gain important information about the detector noise and about the validity of the equipartion theorem of thermodynamics. Here, we measured the temperature dependence of the thermal amplitude of a tuning fork and compared it to the expected values based on the equipartition theorem. Abstract: The photoproduction of $ωおめが$ mesons on LH_2, C and Nb has been studied for incident photon energies from 900 to 1300 MeV using the CB/TAPS detector at ELSA. The $ωおめが$ line shape does not show any significant difference between the LH_2 and the Nb targets. In-medium $ωおめが$ mass from the $γがんま+ Nb \to πぱい^{0}γがんま+ X$ reaction

Abstract: Data on the photoproduction of $ωおめが$ mesons on nuclei have been re-analyzed in a search for in-medium modifications. The data were taken with the Crystal Barrel(CB)/TAPS detector system at the ELSA accelerator facility in Bonn. First results from the analysis of the data set were published by D. Trnka et al. in Phys. Rev. Lett 94 (2005) 192303 \cite{david}, claiming a lowering of the $ωおめが$ mass in the… ▽ More Data on the photoproduction of $ωおめが$ mesons on nuclei have been re-analyzed in a search for in-medium modifications. The data were taken with the Crystal Barrel(CB)/TAPS detector system at the ELSA accelerator facility in Bonn. First results from the analysis of the data set were published by D. Trnka et al. in Phys. Rev. Lett 94 (2005) 192303 \cite{david}, claiming a lowering of the $ωおめが$ mass in the nuclear medium by 14$%$ at normal nuclear matter density. The extracted $ωおめが$ line shape was found to be sensitive to the background subtraction. For this reason a re-analysis of the same data set has been initiated and a new method has been developed to reduce the background and to determine the shape and absolute magnitude of the background directly from the data. Details of the re-analysis and of the background determination are described. The $ωおめが$ signal on the $Nb$ target, extracted in the re-analysis, does not show a deviation from the corresponding line shape on a $LH_2$ target, measured as reference. The earlier claim of an in-medium mass shift is thus not confirmed. The sensitivity of the $ωおめが$ line shape to different in-medium modification scenarios is discussed. △ Less

Measurement of the Beam Asymmetry $Σしぐま$ in the Forward Direction for pi0 Photoproduction

Abstract: Photoproduction of neutral pions has been studied with the CBELSA/TAPS detector for photon energies between 0.92 and 1.68~GeV at the electron accelerator ELSA. The beam asymmetry~$Σしぐま$ has been extracted for $115^\circ < θしーた_{\rm c.m.} < 155^\circ$ of the $πぱい^0$~meson and for $θしーた_{\rm c.m.} < 60^\circ$. The new beam asymmetry data improve the world database for photon energies above 1.5~GeV and, by cove… ▽ More Photoproduction of neutral pions has been studied with the CBELSA/TAPS detector for photon energies between 0.92 and 1.68~GeV at the electron accelerator ELSA. Abstract: Photoproduction of $ηいーた$ mesons off $^{12}$C, $^{40}$Ca, $^{93}$Nb, and $^{nat}$Pb nuclei has been measured with a tagged photon beam with energies between 0.6 and 2.2 GeV. The experiment was performed at the Bonn ELSA accelerator with the combined setup of the Crystal Barrel and TAPS calorimeters. It aimed at the in-medium properties of the S$_{11}$(1535) nucleon resonance and the study of the ab… ▽ More Photoproduction of $ηいーた$ mesons off $^{12}$C, $^{40}$Ca, $^{93}$Nb, and $^{nat}$Pb nuclei has been measured with a tagged photon beam with energies between 0.6 and 2.2 GeV. The experiment was performed at the Bonn ELSA accelerator with the combined setup of the Crystal Barrel and TAPS calorimeters. It aimed at the in-medium properties of the S$_{11}$(1535) nucleon resonance and the study of the absorption properties of nuclear matter for $ηいーた$ mesons. Careful consideration was given to contributions from $ηいーたπぱい$ final states and secondary production mechanisms of $ηいーた$-mesons e.g. from inelastic $πぱいN$ reactions of intermediate pions. The analysis of the mass number scaling shows that the nuclear absorption cross section $σしぐま_{Nηいーた}$ for $ηいーた$ mesons is constant over a wide range of the $ηいーた$ momentum. Abstract: At the electron accelerator ELSA a linearly polarised tagged photon beam is produced by coherent bremsstrahlung off a diamond crystal. Orientation and energy range of the linear polarisation can be deliberately chosen by accurate positioning of the crystal with a goniometer. The degree of polarisation is determined by the form of the scattered electron spectrum. The dependence of the $ωおめが$ meson cross section on the nuclear mass number has been compared with three different types of models, a Glauber analysis, a BUU analysis of the Giessen theory group and a calculation by the Valencia theory group. In all three cases, the inelastic $ωおめが$ width is found to be $130-150 \rm{MeV/c^2}$ at normal nuclear matter density for an average 3-momentum of 1.1 GeV/c. In the restframe of the $ωおめが$ meson, this inelastic $ωおめが$ width corresponds to a reduction of the $ωおめが$ lifetime by a factor $\approx 30$. Abstract: This paper reports on the first measurement of the ^16O(e,e'pn)^14N reaction. Data were measured in kinematics centred on a super-parallel geometry at energy and momentum transfers of 215 MeV and 316 MeV/c. The experimental resolution was sufficient to distinguish groups of states in the residual nucleus but not good enough to separate individual states. Measurement of the LT-asymmetry in πぱい^0 electroproduction at the energy of the Δでるた(1232) resonance
