We present here the recent evolution of the Be disk in this system thanks to spectra collected by amateur spectroscopists since the end of 2013. A large transition occurred: the emission linked to the Be disk nearly disappeared in January 2014, but the disk has recovered, with a line strength now reaching levels only seen during the active phase of 1950--1990. In parallel to this change in strength occurs a change of disk structure, notably involving the disappearance of the strong asymmetry responsible for the V/R modulation.

The extreme magnetoelectric medium (EME medium) is defined in terms of two medium dyadics, $α$, producing electric polarization by the magnetic field and $β$, producing magnetic polarization by the electric field. Plane-wave propagation of time-harmonic fields of fixed finite frequency in the EME medium is studied. It is shown that (if $ω\neq 0$) the dispersion equation has a cubic and homogeneous form, whence the wave vector $k$ is either zero or has arbitrary magnitude. In many cases there is no dispersion equation ("NDE medium") to restrict the wave vector in an EME medium. Attention is paid to the case where the two medium dyadics have the same set of eigenvectors. In such a case the $k$ vector is restricted to three eigenplanes defined by the medium dyadics. The emergence of such a result is demonstrated by considering a more regular medium, and taking the limit of zero permittivity and permeability. The special case of uniaxial EME medium is studied in detail. It is shown that an interface of a uniaxial EME medium appears as a DB boundary when the axis of the medium is normal to the interface. More in general, EME media display interesting wave effects that can potentially be realized through metasurface engineering.

It is known that the Fresnel wave surfaces of transparent biaxial media have 4 singular points, located on two special directions. We show that, in more general media, the number of singularities can exceed 4. In fact, a highly symmetric linear material is proposed whose Fresnel surface exhibits 16 singular points. Because, for every linear material, the dispersion equation is quartic, we conclude that 16 is the maximum number of isolated singularities. The identity of Fresnel and Kummer surfaces, which holds true for media with a certain symmetry (zero skewon piece), provides an elegant interpretation of the results. We describe a metamaterial realization for our linear medium with 16 singular points. It is found that an appropriate combination of metal bars, split-ring resonators, and magnetized particles can generate the correct permittivity, permeability, and magnetoelectric moduli. Lastly, we discuss the arrangement of the singularities in terms of Kummer's (16,6)-configuration of points and planes. An investigation parallel to ours, but in linear elasticity, is suggested for future research.

Complete determination of the polarisation state of light requires at least four distinct projective measurements of the associated Stokes vector. Stability of state reconstruction, however, hinges on the condition number $κ$ of the corresponding instrument matrix. Optimisation of redundant measurement frames with an arbitrary number of analysis states, $m$, is considered in this Letter in the sense of minimisation of $κ$. The minimum achievable $κ$ is analytically found and shown to be independent of $m$, except for $m=5$ where this minimum is unachievable. Distribution of the optimal analysis states over the Poincaré sphere is found to be described by spherical 2-designs, including the Platonic solids as special cases. Higher order polarisation properties also play a key role in nonlinear, stochastic and quantum processes. Optimal measurement schemes for nonlinear measurands of degree $t$ are hence also considered and found to correspond to spherical $2t$-designs, thereby constituting a generalisation of the concept of mutually unbiased bases.

We determine the temporal evolution of the luminosity L(WD), radius R(WD) and effective temperature Teff of the white dwarf (WD) pseudophotosphere of V339 Del from its discovery to around day 40. Another main objective was studying the ionization structure of the ejecta. These aims were achieved by modelling the optical/near-IR spectral energy distribution (SED) using low-resolution spectroscopy (3500 - 9200 A), UBVRcIc and JHKLM photometry. During the fireball stage (Aug. 14.8 - 19.9, 2013), Teff was in the range of 6000 - 12000 K, R(WD) was expanding non-uniformly in time from around 66 to around 300 (d/3 kpc) R(Sun), and L(WD) was super-Eddington, but not constant. After the fireball stage, a large emission measure of 1.0-2.0E+62 (d/3 kpc)**2 cm**(-3) constrained the lower limit of L(WD) to be well above the super-Eddington value. The evolution of the H-alpha line and mainly the transient emergence of the Raman-scattered O VI 1032 A line suggested a biconical ionization structure of the ejecta with a disk-like H I region persisting around the WD until its total ionization, around day 40. It is evident that the nova was not evolving according to the current theoretical prediction. The unusual non-spherically symmetric ejecta of nova V339 Del and its extreme physical conditions and evolution during and after the fireball stage represent interesting new challenges for the theoretical modelling of the nova phenomenon.

Variants of fluctuation theorems recently discovered in the statistical mechanics of non-equilibrium processes may be used for the efficient determination of high-dimensional integrals as typically occurring in Bayesian data analysis. In particular for multimodal distributions, Monte-Carlo procedures not relying on perfect equilibration are advantageous. We provide a comprehensive statistical error analysis for the determination of the prior-predictive value in a Bayes problem building on a variant of the Jarzynski equation. Special care is devoted to the characterization of the bias intrinsic to the method. We also discuss the determination of averages over multimodal posterior distributions with the help of a variant of the Crooks theorem. All our findings are verified by extensive numerical simulations of two model systems with bimodal likelihoods.

Guided by results in the premetric electrodynamics of local and linear media, we introduce on 4-dimensional spacetime the new abstract notion of a Kummer tensor density of rank four, ${\cal K}^{ijkl}$. This tensor density is, by definition, a cubic algebraic functional of a tensor density of rank four ${\cal T}^{ijkl}$, which is antisymmetric in its first two and its last two indices: ${\cal T}^{ijkl} = - {\cal T}^{jikl} = - {\cal T}^{ijlk}$. Thus, ${\cal K}\sim {\cal T}^3$, see Eq.(46). (i) If $\cal T$ is identified with the electromagnetic response tensor of local and linear media, the Kummer tensor density encompasses the generalized {\it Fresnel wave surfaces} for propagating light. In the reversible case, the wave surfaces turn out to be {\it Kummer surfaces} as defined in algebraic geometry (Bateman 1910). (ii) If $\cal T$ is identified with the {\it curvature} tensor $R^{ijkl}$ of a Riemann-Cartan spacetime, then ${\cal K}\sim R^3$ and, in the special case of general relativity, ${\cal K}$ reduces to the Kummer tensor of Zund (1969). This $\cal K$ is related to the {\it principal null directions} of the curvature. We discuss the properties of the general Kummer tensor density. In particular, we decompose $\cal K$ irreducibly under the 4-dimensional linear group $GL(4,R)$ and, subsequently, under the Lorentz group $SO(1,3)$.

Geometrical optics describes, with good accuracy, the propagation of high-frequency plane waves through an electromagnetic medium. Under such approximation, the behaviour of the electromagnetic fields is characterised by just three quantities: the temporal frequency $ω$, the spatial wave (co)vector $k$, and the polarisation (co)vector $a$. Numerous key properties of a given optical medium are determined by the Fresnel surface, which is the visual counterpart of the equation relating $ω$ and $k$. For instance, the propagation of electromagnetic waves in a uniaxial crystal, such as calcite, is represented by two light-cones. Kummer, whilst analysing quadratic line complexes as models for light rays in an optical apparatus, discovered in the framework of projective geometry a quartic surface that is linked to the Fresnel one. Given an arbitrary dispersionless linear (meta)material or vacuum, we aim to establish whether the resulting Fresnel surface is equivalent to, or is more general than, a Kummer surface.

We analysed variations of a double-peaked profile of the Hα emission line in the spectrum of π Aqr that was observed in many phases during ~40 orbital cycles in 2004--2013. We applied the Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT) method to search for periodicity in the peak intensity (V/R) ratio. Doppler tomography was used to study the structure of the disk around the primary. The dominant frequency in the power spectrum of the Hα V/R ratio is 0.011873 day^-1 that correspond to a period of 84.2(2) days and is in agreement with the earlier determined orbital period of the system, Porb=84.1 days. The V/R ratio shows a sinusoidal variation phase-locked with the orbital period. Doppler maps of all our spectra show a non-uniform structure of the disk around the primary: a ring with the inner and outer radii at Vin~ 450 km/s and Vout~ 200km/s, respectively, along with an extended stable region (spot) at V_x ~ 225 km/s and V_y~100 km/s. The disk radius of ~ 65 Rsun = 0.33 AU was estimated assuming Keplerian motion of a particle on a circular orbit at the disk outer edge.

The well-known TE/TM decomposition of time-harmonic electromagnetic fields in uniaxial anisotropic media is generalized in terms of four-dimensional differential-form formalism by requiring that the field two-form satisfies an orthogonality condition with respect to two given bivectors. Conditions for the electromagnetic medium in which such a decomposition is possible are derived and found to define three subclasses of media. It is shown that the previously known classes of generalized Q-media and generalized P-media are particular cases of the proposed decomposable media (DCM) associated to a quadratic equation for the medium dyadic. As a novel solution, another class of special decomposable media (SDCM) is defined by a linear dyadic equation. The paper further discusses the properties of medium dyadics and plane-wave propagation in all the identified cases of DCM and SDCM.

Furthermore, we point out that the transformation designed lens, which relies on the concept of spacetime folding, does not amplify evanescent modes, in contrast to the Pendry-Veselago lens. The Poynting vector is an invaluable tool for analysing electromagnetic problems. However, even a rigorous stress-energy tensor approach can still leave us with the question: is it best defined as $\Vec{E} \cross \Vec{H}$ or as $\Vec{D} \cross \Vec{B}$? Typical electromagnetic treatments provide yet another perspective: they regard $\Vec{E} \cross \Vec{B}$ as the appropriate definition, because $\Vec{E}$ and $\Vec{B}$ are taken to be the fundamental electromagnetic fields. The astute reader will even notice the fourth possible combination of fields: i.e. $\Vec{D} \cross \Vec{H}$. Faced with this diverse selection, we have decided to treat each possible flux vector on its merits, deriving its associated energy continuity equation but applying minimal restrictions to the allowed host media. We then discuss each form, and how it represents the response of the medium. Finally, we derive a propagation equation for each flux vector using a directional fields approach; a useful result which enables further interpretation of each flux and its interaction with the medium.

The Thomas-Fermi (TF) approximation for the static dielectric constant of a three-dimensional electron liquid can be derived from minimizing the TF local-density approximation for the kinetic-energy functional. Here we show that this connection between energy functionals and model dielectric constants is not an artifact of three-dimensionality or of the kinetic-energy functional, but a general paradigm that can be exploited to build specific physical phenomena into model dielectric constants by deriving them from suitable energy functionals. Four examples are worked out in detail, by calculating the dielectric constants that follow, respectively, from (i) exchange corrections to TF theory in three dimensions, i.e., TF-Dirac theory, (ii) further correlation corrections to TF-Dirac theory in three dimensions, (iii) TF theory in two dimensions, and (iv) exchange corrections to TF theory in two dimensions. Each of these cases has certain interesting features that are discussed in some detail. As a byproduct of these investigations we also find that a common textbook statement about the long-wavelength ($k\to0$) limit of the random-phase approximation is not fully correct.
