Abstract:
PtBi2 is a Weyl semimetal, which demonstrates superconductivity with low critical temperature Tc ~ 0.6 K in the bulk. Here, we report our study of electron-phonon interaction (EPI) in trigonal PtBi2 by the Yanson point contact (PC) spectroscopy and presenting the observation of PC enhanced superconductivity. We show, that the Yansons PC spectra display a broad maximum around 15 meV, indicating, ap…

We show, that the Yansons PC spectra display a broad maximum around 15 meV, indicating, apparently, EPI mechanism of Cooper pairing in PtBi2. Moreover, we discovered a substantial increase of Tc up to ~ 3.5 K in PCs. The observed Tc is sufficiently higher than the bulk value, as well as detected at hydrostatic pressure. We calculated the phonon density of states and Eliashberg EPI function in PtBi2 within the framework of the density functional theory. A comparison of experimental data with theoretical calculations showed acceptable agreement. The theoretical Tc is 3.5 K, which corresponds to the experimental value.

Abstract:
We report a systematic study of low energy metastable states in van der Waals semimetals TiS2, TiSe2 and TiTe2 within the DFT theory by means the evolutionary search algorithm. We find a big difference between TiSe2, TiS2 and TiTe2 in low energy metastable states. While several metastable states exist in TiSe2 and TiS2, no low energy metastable states were found in TiTe2. We show that some of the obtained metastable states can be identified as charge density wave (CDW). We argue that existence of the low energy metastable phases indicates that emergence CDW as a ground state in these compounds.

Fermi surfaces, three-dimensional (3D) abstract interfaces that define the occupied energies of electrons in a solid, are important for characterizing and predicting the thermal, electrical, magnetic, and optical properties of crystalline metals and semiconductors [1]. Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) is the only technique directly probing the Fermi surface by measuring the Fermi momenta (kF) from energy and angular distribution of photoelectrons dislodged by monochromatic light [2]. Existing electron analyzers are able to determine a number of kF-vectors simultaneously, but current technical limitations prohibit a direct high-resolution 3D Fermi surface mapping. As a result, no such datasets exist, strongly limiting our knowledge about the Fermi surfaces and restricting a detailed comparison with the widely available nowadays calculated 3D Fermi surfaces. Here we show that using a simpler instrumentation, based on the Fourier electron optics combined with a retardation field of the detector, it is possible to perform 3D-mapping within a very short time interval and with very high resolution. We present the first detailed experimental 3D Fermi surface recorded in the full Brillouin zone along the kz-direction as well as other experimental results featuring multiple advantages of our technique. In combination with various light sources, including synchrotron radiation, our methodology and instrumentation offer new opportunities for high-resolution ARPES in the physical and life sciences.

Experimentally discovered compounds in the iron-nitrogen system belong to the low concentration part of the Fe-N phase diagram. In our paper, which is based on ab initio calculations we have studied formation and stability of high-pressure iron mono-nitride phases, and particularly the new magnetic phase with a NiAs-type structure. We have investigated the role of dynamic, thermodynamic and electronic properties, such as electronic correlations and pressure-induced phase stabilisation. We demonstrate that the new hexagonal FeN phase is stable for a wide range of external pressure and it can be formed as a metastable phase at zero pressure. We show that it has relativity small Curie temperature and it may possess a non-collinear magnetism.
