We establish the first extension results for divergence-free (or solenoidal) elements of $\mathrm{L}^{1}$-based function spaces. Here, the key point is to preserve the solenoidality constraint while simultaneously keeping the underlying $\mathrm{L}^{1}$-boundedness. While previous results as in Kato et al. [Extension and representation of divergence-free vector fields on bounded domains, Math. Res. Lett., 2000] for $\mathrm{L}^{p}$-based function spaces, $1<p<\infty$, rely on PDE approaches, basic principles from harmonic analysis rule out such strategies in the $\mathrm{L}^{1}$-context. By means of a novel method adapted to the divergence-free constraint via differential forms, we establish the existence of such extension operators in the $\mathrm{L}^{1}$-based situation. This applies both to the case of convex domains, where a global extensions can be achieved, as well as to the Lipschitz case, where a local extension can be achieved. Being applicable to $1<p<\infty$ too, our method provides a unifying approach to the cases $p\in\{1,\infty\}$ and $1<p<\infty$. Specifically, covering the exponents $p\in\{1,\infty\}$, this answers a borderline case left open by Kato et al. [Extension and representation of divergence-free vector fields on bounded domains, Math. Res. Lett., 2000] in the affirmative. By use of explicit examples, the assumptions on the underlying domains are shown to be almost optimal.

The aim of the paper is to recall the importance of the study of invertibility and monotonicity of stress-strain relations for investigating the non-uniqueness and bifurcation of homogeneous solutions of the equilibrium problem of a hyperelastic cube subjected to equiaxial tensile forces. In other words, we reconsider a remarkable possibility in this nonlinear scenario: Does symmetric loading lead only to symmetric deformations or also to asymmetric deformations? If so, what can we say about monotonicity for these homogeneous solutions, a property which is less restrictive than the energetic stability criteria of homogeneous solutions for Rivlin's cube problem. For the Neo-Hooke type materials we establish what properties the volumetric function $h$ depending on ${\rm det}\, F$ must have to ensure the existence of a unique radial solution (i.e. the cube must continue to remain a cube) for any magnitude of radial stress acting on the cube. The function $h$ proposed by Ciarlet and Geymonat satisfies these conditions. However, discontinuous equilibrium trajectories may occur, characterized by abruptly appearing non-symmetric deformations with increasing load, and a cube can instantaneously become a parallelepiped. Up to the load value for which the bifurcation in the radial solution is realized local monotonicity holds true. However, after exceeding this value, monotonicity no longer occurs on homogeneous deformations which, in turn, preserve the cube shape.

We establish a family of coercive Korn-type inequalities for generalised incompatible fields in the superlinear growth regime under sharp criteria. This extends and unifies several previously known inequalities that are pivotal to the existence theory for a multitude of models in continuum mechanics in an optimal way. Different from our preceding work (ArXiv 2206.10373), where we focussed on the case $p=1$ and incompatibilities governed by the matrix curl, the case $p>1$ considered in the present paper gives us access to substantially stronger results from harmonic analysis but conversely deals with more general incompatibilities. Especially, we obtain sharp generalisations of recently proved inequalities by the last two authors and Müller (Calc. Var. PDE 60 (2021), 150) in the realm of incompatible Korn-type inequalities with conformally invariant dislocation energy. However, being applicable to higher order scenarios as well, our approach equally gives the first and sharp inequalities involving Kröner's incompability tensor $\mathrm{inc}$.

With the $p$-mean coercivity condition being stated in terms of a strong quasiconvexity condition on $F$, our results include pointwise $(p,q)$-growth conditions as special cases. Moreover, we directly allow for signed integrands which is natural in view of coercivity considerations and hence the direct method, but is novel in the study of relaxed problems.
In the particular case of classical pointwise $(p,q)$-growth conditions, our results extend the previously known exponent range from Schmidt's foundational work (Arch. Ration. Mech. Anal. 193, 311-337 (2009)) for non-negative integrands to the maximal range for which relaxations are meaningful, moreover allowing for $p=1$. As further key novelties, our results apply to the canonical class of signed integrands and do not rely in any way on measure representations à la Fonseca & Malý (Ann. Inst. Henri Poincaré, Anal. Non Linéaire 14, 309-338 (1997)).

Being applicable to incompatible, that is, non-gradient matrix fields as well, such inequalities generalise the usual Korn-type inequalities used e.g. in linear elasticity. Different from previous contributions, the results gathered in this paper are applicable to all dimensions and optimal. This particularly necessitates the distinction of different constellations between the ellipticities of $\mathcal{A}$, the integrability $p$ and the underlying space dimensions $n$, especially requiring a finer analysis in the two-dimensional situation.

Under the natural condition of constant rank over $\mathbb{C}$, we establish that the equality of nullspaces on the Fourier symbol level already implies the equality of the nullspaces of the differential operators in $\mathscr{D}'$ modulo polynomials of a fixed degree. In particular, this condition allows to speak of natural annihilators within the framework of complexes of differential operators. Starting from a novel approach to sharp Besov boundary traces by Riesz potentials and oscillations that equally applies to $p=1$, a case difficult to be handled by harmonic analysis techniques, we then classify boundary trace- and Korn-type inequalities. For $p=1$ and so despite the failure of the Calderón-Zygmund theory, we prove that sharp trace estimates can be systematically reduced to full $k$-th order gradient estimates. Moreover, for $1<p<\infty$, where sharp trace- yield Korn-type inequalities on smooth domains, we show for the basically optimal class of John domains that Korn-type inequalities persist -- even though the reduction to global Calderón-Zygmund estimates by extension operators might not be possible.

By Rindler's foundational work (Lower semicontinuity for integral functionals in the space of functions of bounded deformation via rigidity and Young measures, Arch. Ration. Mech. The overarching main difficulty here is Ornstein's Non-Inequality, implying that the BD-case is genuinely different from the study of variational integrals on BV. In particular, this paper extends the recent work of Kristensen and the author (Partial regularity for BV-Minimizers, Arch. Ration. Mech. Here, $\|μ\|_{L^{1,λ}}$ denotes the $(1,λ)$-Morrey norm of the measure $μ$, so that such traces can be taken, for example, with respect to the Hausdorff measure $\mathscr{H}^{n-s}$ restricted to fractals of codimension $0<s<1$. The above class of inequalities give a systematic generalisation of Adams' trace inequalities to the limit case $p=1$ and can be used to prove trace embeddings for functions of bounded $\mathbb{A}$-variation, thereby comprising Sobolev functions and functions of bounded variation or deformation. We moreover establish a multiplicative version of the above inequality, which implies ($\mathbb{A}$-)strict continuity of the associated trace operators on $\text{BV}^{\mathbb{A}}$.

We consider a Neumann problem for strictly convex variational functionals of linear growth. We establish the existence of minimisers among $\operatorname{W}^{1,1}$-functions provided that the domain under consideration is simply connected. Hence, in this situation, the relaxation of the functional to the space of functions of bounded variation, which has better compactness properties, is not necessary. Similar $\operatorname{W}^{1,1}$-regularity results for the corresponding Dirichlet problem are only known under rather restrictive convexity assumptions limiting its non-uniformity up to the borderline case of the minimal surface functional, whereas for the Neumann problem no such quantified version of strong convexity is required.

Abstract:
We prove that the critical embedding $\mathrm{W}^{\mathbb{A},1}(B)\hookrightarrow \mathrm{W}^{k-1,\frac{n}{n-1}}$ holds if and only if the $k$-homogeneous, linear differential operator $\mathbb{A}$ on $\mathbb{R}^n$ from $\mathbb{R}^N$ to $\mathbb{R}^m$ has finite dimensional null-space. Here $B$ is a ball in $\mathbb{R}^n$ and $\mathrm{W}^{\mathbb{A},1}(B)$ denotes the space of maps…

Here $B$ is a ball in $\mathbb{R}^n$ and $\mathrm{W}^{\mathbb{A},1}(B)$ denotes the space of maps $u\in \mathrm{L}^1(B,\mathbb{R}^N)$ such that the vector valued distribution $\mathbb{A}u$ is an integrable map. The result was previously known only for several examples of $\mathbb{A}$. Our result contrasts the homogeneous embedding in full-space. Namely, Van Schaftingen proved that $\dot{\mathrm{W}}{^{\mathbb{A},1}}(\mathbb{R}^n)\hookrightarrow \dot{\mathrm{W}}{^{k-1,\frac{n}{n-1}}}$ if and only if $\mathbb{A}$ is elliptic and cancelling. We show that this condition is (strictly) implied by $\mathbb{A}$ having finite dimensional null-space.

In this paper, we consider the space $\mathrm{BV}^{\mathbb A}(Ω)$ of functions of bounded $\mathbb A$-variation. For a given first order linear homogeneous differential operator with constant coefficients $\mathbb A$, this is the space of $L^1$--functions $u:Ω\rightarrow\mathbb R^N$ such that the distributional differential expression $\mathbb A u$ is a finite (vectorial) Radon measure. We show that for Lipschitz domains $Ω\subset\mathbb R^{n}$, $\mathrm{BV}^{\mathbb A}(Ω)$-functions have an $L^1(\partialΩ)$-trace if and only if $\mathbb A$ is $\mathbb C$-elliptic (or, equivalently, if the kernel of $\mathbb A$ is finite dimensional). The existence of an $L^1(\partialΩ)$-trace was previously only known for the special cases that $\mathbb A u$ coincides either with the full or the symmetric gradient of the function $u$ (and hence covered the special cases $\mathrm{BV}$ or $\mathrm{BD}$). As a main novelty, we do not use the fundamental theorem of calculus to construct the trace operator (an approach which is only available in the $\mathrm{BV}$- and $\mathrm{BD}$-setting) but rather compare projections onto the nullspace as we approach the boundary. As a sample application, we study the Dirichlet problem for quasiconvex variational functionals with linear growth depending on $\mathbb A u$.

Partial Regularity for Symmetric-Convex Functionals of Linear Growth
Authors:

Abstract:
We establish partial regularity of BD-minima for variational integrals of linear growth which depend on the symmetric gradients and satisfy a weak ellipticity condition. Since there is no Korn Inequality in the $L^{1}$-Setup, the result does not follow from the respective result on BV due to Anzellotti and Giaquinta.

Abstract:
We study Sobolev regularity results for minimisers of autonomous, convex variational of linear growth which depend on the symmetric gradient rather than the full gradient. This extends the results available in the literature for the BV-setting to the case of functionals whose full gradients are a priori not known to exist as matrix-valued Radon measures.
