It describes multiphase fluid flow (black oil or compositional), proppant transport, transport of non-Newtonian fluid additives, and thermal transport. It also includes stress shadowing from fracture propagation and porothermoelastic responses from pressure change in the matrix. It uses constitutive equations that smoothly transition between equations for flow through an open crack to flow through a closed crack (with or without proppant). This document provides a detailed technical description of the code, along with validation simulations to confirm numerical accuracy.

We extend the microscopic Fermi-liquid theory for the Anderson impurity [Phys.\ Rev.\ B {\bf 64}, 153305 (2001)] to explore non-equilibrium transport at finite magnetic fields. Using the Ward identities in the Keldysh formalism with the analytic and anti-symmetric properties of the vertex function, the spin-dependent Fermi-liquid corrections of order $T^2$ and $(eV)^2$ are determined at low temperatures $T$ and low bias voltages $eV$. Away from half-filling, these corrections can be expressed in terms of the linear and non-linear static susceptibilities which represent the two-body and three-body fluctuations, respectively. We calculate the non-linear susceptibilities using the numerical renormalization group, to explore the differential conductance $dI/dV$ through a quantum dot. We find that the two-body fluctuations dominate the corrections in the Kondo regime at zero magnetic field. The contribution of the three-body fluctuations become significant far away from half-filling, especially in the valence-fluctuation regime and empty-orbital regimes. In finite magnetic fields, the three-body contributions become comparable to the two-body contributions, and play an essential role in the splitting of the zero-bias conductance peak occurring at a magnetic field of the order of the Kondo energy scale. We also apply our microscopic formulation to the magneto-resistance and thermal conductivity of dilute magnetic alloys away from half-filling.

We study the low-energy behavior of the vertex function of a single Anderson impurity away from half-filling for finite magnetic fields, using the Ward identities with careful consideration of the anti-symmetry and analytic properties. The asymptotic form of the vertex function $Γ_{σσ';σ'σ}^{}(iω,iω';iω',iω)$ is determined up to terms of linear order with respect to the two frequencies $ω$ and $ω'$, as well as the $ω^2$ contribution for anti-parallel spins $σ'\neq σ$ at $ω'=0$. From these results, we also obtain a series of the Fermi-liquid relations beyond those of Yamada-Yosida. The $ω^2$ real part of the self-energy $Σ_σ^{}(iω)$ is shown to be expressed in terms of the double derivative $\partial^2Σ_σ^{}(0)/\partial ε_{dσ}^{2}$ with respect to the impurity energy level $ε_{dσ}^{}$, and agrees with the formula obtained recently by Filippone, Moca, von Delft, and Mora in the Nozières phenomenological Fermi-liquid theory [Phys.\ Rev.\ B {\bf 95}, 165404 (2017)]. We also calculate the $T^2$ correction of the self-energy, and find that the real part can be expressed in terms of the three-body correlation function $χ_{\uparrow\downarrow,-σ}^{[3]} = \partial χ_{\uparrow\downarrow}/\partial ε_{d,-σ}^{}$. We also provide an alternative derivation of the asymptotic form of the vertex function. Specifically, we calculate the skeleton diagrams for the vertex function $Γ_{σσ;σσ}^{}(iω,0;0,iω)$ for parallel spins up to order $U^4$ in the Coulomb repulsion $U$. It directly clarifies the fact that the analytic components of order $ω$ vanish as a result of the cancellation of four related Feynman diagrams which are related to each other through the anti-symmetry operation.

We study the higher-order Fermi-liquid relations of Kondo systems for arbitrary impurity-electron fillings, extending the many-body quantum theoretical approach of Yamada-Yosida. It includes partly a microscopic clarification of the related achievements based on Nozières' phenomenological description: Filippone, Moca, von Delft, and Mora [Phys.\ Rev.\ B {\bf 95}, 165404 (2017)]. In our formulation, the Fermi-liquid parameters such as the quasi-particle energy, damping, and transport coefficients are related to each other through the total vertex $Γ_{σσ';σ'σ} (ω, ω'; ω', ω)$, which may be regarded as a generalized Landau quasi-particle interaction. We obtain exactly this function up to linear order with respect to the frequencies $ω$ and $ω'$ using the anti-symmetry and analytic properties. The coefficients acquire additional contributions of three-body fluctuations away from half-filling through the non-linear susceptibilities. We also apply the formulation to non-equilibrium transport through a quantum dot, and clarify how the zero-bias peak evolves in a magnetic field.

The Luttinger Theorem, which relates the electron density to the volume of the Fermi surface in an itinerant electron system, is taken to be one of the essential features of a Fermi liquid. The microscopic derivation of this result depends on the vanishing of a certain integral, the Luttinger integral $I_{\rm L}$, which is also the basis of the Friedel sum rule for impurity models, relating the impurity occupation number to the scattering phase shift of the conduction electrons. It is known that non-zero values of $I_{\rm L}$ with $I_{\rm L}=\pmπ/2$, occur in impurity models in phases with non-analytic low energy scattering, classified as singular Fermi liquids. Here we show the same values, $I_{\rm L}=\pmπ/2$, occur in an impurity model in phases with regular low energy Fermi liquid behavior. Consequently the Luttinger integral can be taken to characterize these phases, and the quantum critical points separating them interpreted as topological.

We calculate the renormalized parameters for the quasiparticles and their interactions for the Hubbard model in the paramagnetic phase as deduced from the low energy Fermi liquid fixed point using the results of a numerical renormalization group calculation (NRG) and dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT). Even in the low density limit there is significant renormalization of the local quasiparticle interaction $\tilde U$, in agreement with estimates based on the two-particle scattering theory of Kanamori (1963). On the approach to the Mott transition we find a finite ratio for $\tilde U/\tilde D$, where $2\tilde D$ is the renormalized bandwidth, which is independent of whether the transition is approached by increasing the on-site interaction $U$ or on increasing the density to half-filling.The leading $ω^2$ term in the self-energy and the local dynamical spin and charge susceptibilities are calculated within the renormalized perturbation theory (RPT) and compared with the results calculated directly from the NRG-DMFT. The dynamic ${\bf q},ω$ spin susceptibility $χ({\bf q},ω)$ is also estimated from repeated quasiparticle scattering with a local renormalized scattering vertex.

We analyze conditions for the observation of a low energy SU(4) fixed point in capacitively coupled quantum dots. One problem, due to dots with different couplings to their baths, has been considered by Tosi, Roura-Bas and Aligia (2015). They showed how symmetry can be effectively restored via the adjustment of individual gates voltages, but they make the assumption of infinite on-dot and inter-dot interaction strengths. A related problem is the difference in the magnitudes between the on-dot and interdot strengths for capacitively coupled quantum dots. Here we examine both factors, based on a two site Anderson model, using the numerical renormalization group to calculate the local spectral densities on the dots and the renormalized parameters that specify the low energy fixed point. Our results support the conclusions of Tosi et al. that low energy SU(4) symmetry can be restored, but asymptotically achieved only if the inter-dot interaction $U_{12}$ is greater than or of the order of the band width of the coupled conduction bath $D$, which might be difficult to achieve experimentally. By comparing the SU(4) Kondo results for a total dot occupation $n_{\rm tot}=1$ and $n_{\rm tot}=2$ we conclude that the temperature dependence of the conductance is largely determined by the constraints of the Friedel sum rule rather than the SU(4) symmetry and suggest that an initial increase of the conductance with temperature is a distinguishing characteristic feature of an $n_{\rm tot}=1$ universal SU(4) fixed point.

We study the renormalized perturbation theory of the single-impurity Anderson model, particularly the high-order terms in the expansion of the self-energy in powers of the renormalized coupling $\tilde{U}$. Though the presence of counter-terms in the renormalized theory may appear to complicate the diagrammatics, we show how these can be seamlessly accommodated by carrying out the calculation order-by-order in terms of skeleton diagrams. We describe how the diagrams pertinent to the renormalized self-energy and four-vertex can be automatically generated, translated into integrals and numerically integrated. To maximize the efficiency of our approach we introduce a generalized $k$-particle/hole propagator, which is used to analytically simplify the resultant integrals and reduce the dimensionality of the integration. We present results for the self-energy and spectral density to fifth order in $\tilde{U}$, for various values of the model asymmetry, and compare them to a Numerical Renormalization Group calculation.

In the Renormalised Perturbation Theory (RPT) the Anderson impurity model is interpreted in terms of renormalised parameters $\boldsymbol{\tildeμ}= (\tildeε_d, \tildeΔ, \tilde{U})$ which are in a one-to-one correspondence with the bare impurity level $ε_d$, hybridisation $Δ$ and on-site interaction $U$. Though the renormalised parameters suffice to describe the low-energy fixed point of the model, the parameters themselves usually have to be determined using the Numerical Renormalisation Group. In this paper we address this issue by applying the flow equation method to the particle-hole symmetric model to derive a system of differential equations for $ \textrm{d}\boldsymbol{\tildeμ}/ \textrm{d} U$. To leading order in $\tilde{U}$ this assumes a particularly simple form, permitting its analytic solution in this approximation. We find that our results for the renormalised parameters are in good agreement with the NRG and use them to calculate the Wilson ratio, spin susceptibility and conductance of the impurity.

We examine the low energy behavior of a double quantum dot in a regime where spin and pseudospin excitations are degenerate. The individual quantum dots are described by Anderson impurity models with an on-site interaction $U$ which are capacitively coupled by an interdot interaction $U_{12}<U$. The low energy response functions are expressed in terms of renormalized parameters, which can be deduced from an analysis of the fixed point in a numerical renormalization group calculation. At the point where the spin and pseudospin degrees of freedom become degenerate, the free quasiparticle excitations have a phase shift of $π/4$ and a 4-fold degeneracy. We find, however, when the quasiparticle interactions are included, that the low energy effective model has SU(4) symmetry only in the special case $U_{12}=U$ unless both $U$ and $U_{12}$ are greater than $D$, the half-bandwidth of the conduction electron bath. We show that the gate voltage dependence of the temperature dependent differential conductance observed in recent experiments can be described by a quasiparticle density of states with temperature dependent renormalized parameters.

We apply the recently developed extremely correlated Fermi liquid theory to the Anderson impurity model, in the extreme correlation limit. We develop an expansion in a parameter λ, related to n_d, the average occupation of the localized orbital, and find analytic expressions for the Green's functions to O(λ^2). These yield the impurity spectral function and also the self-energy Σ(ω) in terms of the two self energies of the ECFL formalism. The imaginary parts of the latter, have roughly symmetric low energy behaviour (~ ω^2), as predicted by Fermi Liquid theory. However, the inferred impurity self energy
Σ"(ω) develops asymmetric corrections near n_d ~ 1, leading in turn to a strongly asymmetric impurity spectral function with a skew towards the occupied states. Within this approximation the Friedel sum rule is satisfied but we overestimate the quasiparticle weight z relative to the known exact results, resulting in an over broadening of the Kondo peak. Upon scaling the frequency by the quasiparticle weight z, the spectrum is found to be in reasonable agreement with numerical renormalization group results over a wide range of densities.

The dots are coupled via a direct interaction $U_{12}$ and an exchange interaction $J$. The model has two types of quantum critical points, one at $J=J_c$ to a local singlet state and one at $U_{12}=U_{12}^c$ to a locally charge ordered state. The renormalized parameters which determine the low energy behavior are calculated from the NRG. The results confirm the values predicted from the RPT on the approach to the critical points, which can be expressed in terms of a single energy scale $T^*$ in all cases. This includes cases without particle-hole symmetry, and cases with asymmetry between the dots, where there is also a transition at $J=J_c$. The results give a comprehensive quantitative picture of the behavior of the model in the low energy Fermi liquid regimes, and some of the conclusions regarding the emergence of a single energy scale may apply to a more general class of quantum critical points, such as those observed in some heavy fermion systems.

Here we show how these quantities can be calculated via an extension of Wilson's numerical renormalization group method. Accurate results are obtained in all parameter regimes and for the full range of temperatures of interest ranging from the high temperature perturbative regime $T>>T_{K}$, through the cross--over region $T\approx T_{K}$, and into the low temperature strong coupling regime $T<<T_{K}$. The Fermi liquid relations for the $T^2$ coefficient of the resistivity and the linear coefficient of the thermopower are satisfied to a high degree of accuracy. The anomalous low energy behaviour observed in metals with strong electron correlation, such as in the heavy fermion materials, is believed to arise from the scattering of the itinerant electrons with low energy spin fluctuations. In systems with magnetic impurities this scattering leads to the Kondo effect and a low energy renormalized energy scale, the Kondo temperature $T_{\rm K}$. It has been generally assumed that these low energy scales can only be accessed by a non-perturbative approach due to the strength of the local inter-electron interactions. Here we show that it is possible to circumvent this difficulty by first suppressing the spin fluctuations with a large magnetic field. As a first step field-dependent renormalized parameters are calculated using standard perturbation theory. A renormalized perturbation theory is then used to calculate the renormalized parameters for a reduced magnetic field strength. The process can be repeated and the flow of the renormalized parameters continued to zero magnetic field. We illustrate the viability of this approach for the single impurity Anderson model. The results for the renormalized parameters, which flow as a function of magnetic field, can be checked with those from numerical renormalization group and Bethe ansatz calculations.

We explore the quantum phase transitions between two ordered states in the infinite dimensional Hubbard-Holstein model at half filling. Our study is based on the dynamical mean field theory (DMFT) combined with the numerical renormalization group (NRG), which allows us to handle both strong electron-electron and strong electron-phonon interactions. The transition line is characterized by an effective electron-electron interaction. Depending on this effective interaction and the phonon frequency $ω_0$ one finds either a continuous transition or discontinuous transition. Here, the analysis focuses on the behavior of the system when the electron-electron repulsion $U$ and the phonon-mediated attraction $λ$ are equal. We first discuss the adiabatic and antiadiabatic limiting cases. For finite $ω_0$ we study the differences between the antiferromagnetic (AFM) and charge order, and find that when present the AFM state has a lower energy on the line.

We explore the predictions of the renormalized perturbation theory for an n-channel Anderson model, both with and without Hund's rule coupling, in the regime away from particle-hole symmetry. For the model with n=2 we deduce the renormalized parameters from numerical renormalization group calculations, and plot them as a function of the occupation at the impurity site, nd. From these we deduce the spin, orbital and charge susceptibilities, Wilson ratios and quasiparticle density of states at T=0, in the different parameter regimes, which gives a comprehensive overview of the low energy behavior of the model. We compare the difference in Kondo behaviors at the points where nd=1 and nd=2. One unexpected feature of the results is the suppression of the charge susceptibility in the strong correlation regime over the occupation number range 1 <nd <3.

We extend the renormalized perturbation theory for the single impurity Anderson model to the n-channel model with a Hund's rule coupling, and show that the exact results for the spin, orbital and charge susceptibilities, as well as the leading low temperature dependence for the resistivity, are obtained by working to second order in the renormalized couplings. A universal relation is obtained between the renormalized parameters, independent of n, in the Kondo regime. An expression for the dynamic spin susceptibility is also derived by taking into account repeated quasiparticle scattering, which is asymptotically exact in the low frequency regime and satisfies the Korringa-Shiba relation. The renormalized parameters, including the renormalized Hund's rule coupling, are deduced from numerical renormalization group calculations for the model for the case n=2. The results confirm explicitly the universal relations between the parameters in the Kondo regime. Using these results we evaluate the spin, orbital and charge susceptibilities, temperature dependence of the low temperature resistivity and dynamic spin susceptibility for the particle-hole symmetric n=2 model.

We apply this approach to the Anderson-Holstein impurity model to calculate the ground state probability density $ρ(x)$ for the displacement $x$ of the local oscillator. From this density we can deduce an effective local potential for the oscillator and compare its form with that obtained from a semiclassical approximation as a function of the coupling strength. The method is extended to infinite dimensional Holstein-Hubbard model using dynamical mean field theory. We use this approach to compare the probability densities for the displacement of the local oscillator in the normal, antiferromagnetic and charge ordered phases.

We study the competition between an instantaneous local Coulomb repulsion and a boson mediated retarded attraction, as described by the Hubbard-Holstein model. Restricting to the case of half filling, the ground-state phase diagram and the transitions from antiferromagnetically ordered states to charge ordered states are analyzed. The calculations are based on the model in large dimensions, so that dynamical mean field theory can be applied, and the associated impurity problem is solved using the numerical renormalization group method. The transition is found to occur when electron-electron coupling strength $U$ and the induced interaction $λ$ due to electron-phonon coupling approximately coincide, $U\simeq λ$. We find a continuous transition for small coupling and large $ω_0$, and a discontinuous one for large coupling and/or small $ω_0$. We present results for the order parameters, the static expectation values for the electrons and phonons, and the corresponding spectral functions. They illustrate the different types of behavior to be seen near the transitions. Additionally, the quasiparticle properties are calculated in the normal state, which leads to a consistent interpretation of the low energy excitations.

We study the low-energy properties of a triangular triple quantum dot connected to two non-interacting leads in a wide parameter range, using the numerical renormalization group (NRG). Various kinds of Kondo effects take place in this system depending on the electron filling N_{tot}, or the level position $ε_d$ of the triple dot. The SU(4) Kondo behavior is seen in the half-filled case N_{tot} = 3.0 at the dip of the series conductance, and it causes a charge redistribution between the even and odd orbitals in the triangle. We show generally that the quasi-particle excitations from a local Fermi-liquid ground state acquire a channel symmetry at zero points of the two-terminal conductance, in the case the system has time-reversal and inversion symmetries. It causes the SU(4) behavior at low energies, while the orbital degeneracy in the triangle determines the high-energy behavior. At four-electron filling N_{tot} = 4.0, a local S=1 moment emerges at high temperatures due to a Nagaoka ferromagnetic mechanism. It is fully screened by the electrons from the two conducting channels via a two-stage Kondo effect, which is caused by a difference in the charge distribution in the even and odd orbitals.

We give details of this extension and validate our calculations with DMFT results with antiferromagnetic ordering. We also present results for static and integrated quantities for different filling factors in the crossover from weak (BCS) to strong coupling (BEC) superfluidity. We study the evolution of the single-particle spectra throughout the crossover regime. Although the DMFT does not include the interaction of the fermions with the Goldstone mode, we find strong deviations from the mean-field theory in the intermediate and strong coupling (BEC) regimes. In particular, we show that low-energy charge fluctuations induce a transfer of spectral weight from the Bogoliubov quasiparticles to a higher-energy incoherent hump.

It is found that the system shows a variety of Kondo effects depending on the filling of the triangle. The SU(4) Kondo effect occurs at half-filling, and a sharp conductance dip due to a phase lapse appears in the gate-voltage dependence. Furthermore, when four electrons occupy the three sites on average, a local S=1 moment, which is caused by the Nagaoka mechanism, is induced along the triangle. The temperature dependence of the entropy and spin susceptibility of the triangle shows that this moment is screened by the conduction electrons via two separate stages at different temperatures. The two-terminal and four-terminal conductances show a clear difference at the gate voltages, where the SU(4) or the S=1 Kondo effects occurring.

We look at the different regimes corresponding to half-filling, near half-filling and well away from half-filling, for intermediate and strong values of the local interaction $U$. The low energy results are analyzed in terms of quasiparticles with field dependent parameters. The renormalized parameters are determined by two different methods, both based on numerical renormalization group (NRG) calculations, and we find good agreement. Away from half-filling the quasiparticle weights, $z_σ(H)$, differ according to the spin type $σ=\uparrow$ or $σ=\downarrow$. Using the renormalized parameters, we show that DMFT-NRG results for the local longitudinal and transverse dynamic spin susceptibilities in an arbitrary field can be understood in terms of repeated scattering of these quasiparticles. We also check Luttinger's theorem for the Hubbard model and find it to be satisfied in all parameter regimes and for all values of the magnetic field.

We analyze the properties of the quasiparticle excitations of metallic antiferromagnetic states in a strongly correlated electron system. The study is based on dynamical mean field theory (DMFT) for the infinite dimensional Hubbard model with antiferromagnetic symmetry breaking. Self-consistent solutions of the DMFT equations are calculated using the numerical renormalization group (NRG). The low energy behavior in these results is then analyzed in terms of renormalized quasiparticles. The parameters for these quasiparticles are calculated directly from the NRG derived self-energy, and also from the low energy fixed point of the effective impurity. They are found to be in good agreement. We show that the main low energy features of the $\bf k$-resolved spectral density can be understood in terms of the quasiparticle picture. Asymmetry in the Josephson couplings between two superconductors through a quantum dot is studied based on a single impurity Anderson model using the numerical renormalization group (NRG). Specifically, we examine how the difference between the couplings Γ_L and Γ_R affects the ground state, which is known to show a quantum phase transition between a nonmagnetic singlet and a magnetic doublet depending on the various parameters; the Coulomb interaction U, onsite potential ε_d, level width Γ_L, Γ_R, caused by the hybridization, and superconducting gaps Δ_L and Δ_R for the leads on the left and right. Our results show that whether the local moment is fully screened or not depends substantially on the asymmetry in the couplings Γ_L \neq Γ_R. It tends to make the singlet ground state stable, while the size and phase difference of the two superconducting gaps tend to suppress the screening. We also discuss some general symmetry properties of the system and their relation to the current conservation.

We calculate the spin and charge dynamical susceptibilities of a strongly correlated impurity model in a renormalised perturbation theory.
The irreducible for vertices for the quasiparticle scattering are deduced from the renormalised parameters, which have been calculated by fitting of the low-lying levels of a numerical renormalisation group (NRG) calculation to those of an effective Anderson model. The susceptibilities are asymptotically exact in the low frequency limit and satisfy the Korringa-Shiba relation. By comparing the results with those calculated from a direct NRG calculation, we show that the renormalised perturbation theory (RPT) description gives a very good description of spin dynamics for all values of the local interaction U, not only at low frequencies but over the whole relevant frequency range.
In the presence of a magnetic field the approach can be generalised using field dependent renormalised parameters to calculate the transverse and parallel spin dynamic susceptibilities. The RPT results give accurate results for the spin dynamics over the whole frequency range and for all values of the magnetic field.

We describe a formulation to deduce the phase shifts, which determine the ground-state properties of interacting quantum-dot systems with the inversion symmetry, from the fixed-point eigenvalues of the numerical renormalization group (NRG). Our approach does not assume the specific form of the Hamiltonian nor the electron-hole symmetry, and it is applicable to a wide class of quantum impurities connected to noninteracting leads. We apply the method to a triple dot which is described by a three-site Hubbard chain connected to two noninteracting leads, and calculate the dc conductance away from half-filling. The conductance shows the typical Kondo plateaus of Unitary limit in some regions of the gate voltages, at which the total number of electrons N_el in the three dots is odd, i.e., N_el =1, 3 and 5. In contrast, the conductance shows a wide minimum in the gate voltages corresponding to even number of electrons, N_el = 2 and 4.
We also discuss the parallel conductance of the triple dot connected transversely to four leads, and show that it can be deduced from the two phase shifts defined in the two-lead case.

We give a comprehensive analysis of the singular dynamics and of the low-energy fixed point of one-channel impurity s-d models with ferromagnetic and underscreened antiferromagnetic couplings. We use the numerical renormalization group (NRG) to perform calculations at T=0. The spectral densities of the one-electron Green's functions and t-matrices are found to have very sharp cusps at the Fermi level (w=0), but do not diverge. The approach of the Fermi level is governed by terms proportional to 1/ln^2(w/T_0) as w -> 0. The scaled NRG energy levels show a slow convergence as 1/(N+C) to their fixed point values, where N is the iteration number and C is a constant dependent on the coupling J from which the low energy scale T_0 can be deduced. We calculate also the dynamical spin susceptibility, and the elastic and inelastic scattering cross-sections as a function of w. The inelastic scattering goes to zero as w-> 0, as expected for a Fermi liquid, but anomalously slowly compared to the fully screened case. We obtain the asymptotic forms for the phase shifts for elastic scattering of the quasiparticles in the high-spin and low-spin channels.

These three parameters completely specify a renormalized perturbation theory (RPT) which leads to exact expressions for the low temperature behaviour. Using a combination of the two techniques, NRG to determine $\tildeε_d$, $\tildeΔ$, and $\tilde U$, and then substituting these in the RPT expressions gives a very efficient and accurate way of calculating the low temperature behaviour of the impurity as it avoids the necessity of subtracting out the conduction electron component. Here we extend this approach to an Anderson model in a magnetic field, so that $\tildeε_d$, $\tildeΔ$, and $\tilde U$ become dependent on the magnetic field. The de-renormalization of the renormalized quasiparticles can then be followed as the magnetic field strength is increased. Using these running coupling constants in a RPT calculation we derive an expression for the low temperature conductivity for arbitrary magnetic field strength.

Abstract:
We propose a minimal model for the Josephson current through a quantum dot in a Kondo regime. We start with the model that consists of an Anderson impurity connected to two superconducting (SC) leads with the gaps $Δ_α=|Δ_α| e^{i θ_α}$, where $α= L, R$ for the lead at left and right. We show that, when one of the SC gaps is much larger than the others $|Δ_L| \gg |Δ_R|$, the starting model can be…

We show that, when one of the SC gaps is much larger than the others $|Δ_L| \gg |Δ_R|$, the starting model can be mapped exactly onto the single-channel model, which consists of the right lead of $Δ_R$ and the Anderson impurity with an extra onsite SC gap of $Δ_d \equiv Γ_L e^{i θ_L}$. Here $θ_L$ and $Γ_L$ are defined with respect to the starting model, and $Γ_L$ is the level width due to the coupling with the left lead. Based on this simplified model, we study the ground-state properties for the asymmetric gap, $|Δ_L| \gg |Δ_R|$, using the numerical renormalization group (NRG) method. The results show that the phase difference of the SC gaps $φ\equiv θ_R -θ_L$, which induces the Josephson current, disturbs the screening of the local moment to destabilize the singlet ground state typical of the Kondo system. It can also drive the quantum phase transition to a magnetic doublet ground state, and at the critical point the Josephson current shows a discontinuous change. The asymmetry of the two SC gaps causes a re-entrant magnetic phase, in which the in-gap bound state lies close to the Fermi level.

The effective impurity model is solved using Exact Diagonalization and the Numerical Renormalization Group. Excluding long-range order, we find three different paramagnetic phases, metallic, bipolaronic and Mott insulating, depending on the Hubbard interaction U and the electron-phonon coupling g. We present the behaviour of the one-electron spectral functions and phonon spectra close to the metal insulator transitions.

We present results on the dynamical correlation functions of the particle-hole symmetric Holstein-Hubbard model at zero temperature, calculated using the dynamical mean field theory which is solved by the numerical renormalization group method. We clarify the competing influences of the electron-electron and electron-phonon interactions particularity at the different metal to insulator transitions. The Coulomb repulsion is found to dominate the behaviour in large parts of the metallic regime. By suppressing charge fluctuations, it effectively decouples electrons from phonons. The phonon propagator shows a characteristic softening near the metal to bipolaronic transition but there is very little softening on the approach to the Mott transition.

We show that the low energy behaviour of quite diverse impurity systems can be described by a single renormalized Anderson model, with three parameters, an effective level $\tildeε_d$, an effective hybridization $\tilde V$, and a quasiparticle interaction $\tilde U$. The renormalized parameters are calculated as a function of the bare parameters for a number of impurity models, including those with coupling to phonons and a Falikov-Kimball interaction term. In the model with a coupling to phonons we determine where the interaction of the quasiparticles changes sign as a function of the electron-phonon coupling. In the model with a Falikov-Kimball interaction we show that to a good approximation the low energy behaviour corresponds to that of a bare Anderson model with a shifted impurity level.

We investigate metal-insulator transitions in the Holstein-Hubbard model as a function of the on-site electron-electron interaction U and the electron-phonon coupling g. We use several different numerical methods to calculate the phase diagram, the results of which are in excellent agreement. When the electron-electron interaction U is dominant the transition is to a Mott-insulator; when the electron-phonon interaction dominates, the transition is to a localised bipolaronic state. In the former case, the transition is always found to be second order. This is in contrast to the transition to the bipolaronic state, which is clearly first order for larger values of U. We also present results for the quasiparticle weight and the double-occupancy as function of U and g.

This non-perturbative method reveals significant precursor effects to the gap formation at intermediate coupling strengths. The emergence of a soft phonon mode and very strong lattice fluctuations can be understood in terms of Kondo-like physics due to the development of a double-well structure in the effective potential for the ions.

We illustrate the renormalized perturbation expansion method by applying it to a single impurity Anderson model. Previously, we have shown that this approach gives the {\it exact} leading order results for the specific heat, spin and charge susceptibilities and leading order temperature dependence of the resistivity for this model in the Fermi-liquid regime, when carried out to second order in the renormalized interaction $\tilde U$. Here we consider the effects of higher order quasi-particle scattering and calculate the third order contributions to the $H^3$ term in the impurity magnetization for the symmetric model in a weak magnetic field $H$. The result is asymptotically exact in the weak coupling regime, and is very close to the exact Bethe ansatz result in the Kondo regime. We also calculate the quasi-particle density of states in a magnetic field, which is of interest in relation to recent experimental work on quantum dots.
